Building collapse: Two file anticipatory bail application

Mumbai, August 29: Two shopowners at the Yusuf Manzil -which partially collapsed early this week killing a woman- have filed anticiaptory bail application, fearing arrest as police have lodged a case of culpable homicide against them.

Construction carried out by Yusuf Memon and his son Irfan, who own an electrical appliances’ shop at the ground floor of the building led to its collapse, according to police.

Sessions court will hear the application on August 31.

Interestingly, a day before the collapse, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai had recommended that Memons be booked under Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act (MRTP) for carrying out illegal add-on construction.

“On Monday, the BMC had recommended that the duo be booked under MRTP Act. On Tuesday, the building collapsed,” said Public Prosecutor, R V Kini.

The two have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, mischief, endangering life of others, and relevant sections of the MRTP Act.
