Army jawan killed in J&K

Srinagar, September 01: A Non-Commissoned Officer was kiled in a hostile fire from Pakistan side in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir early today, offical sources said.

Jang Bahadur of 2/5 Gorkha Rifles was killed when a burst of small arms was fired near Tiba border outpost in Balnoi area in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district at 0200 hrs, official sources told UNI.

There was no confirmation from the authorities.

The jawans hails from Assam.

Students allege ragging in UP college

Lucknow, September 01: Four students of a private college in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district have alleged they were ragged and assaulted by their seniors.

Second year B.Tech students of Sitapur Shikshan Sansthan, a college offering several technical courses, have complained to college authorities that fourth year students had beaten them up after they refused to sing and dance as part of ragging on Monday.

Body of girl found in bag on train in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, September 01: The body of a teenage girl was found in an unattended bag in a Mumbai-bound train in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday.

Panic prevailed in an AC coach of the Maharashtra Sampark Kranti Express after a large unattended bag was found underneath a seat.

The ticket collector informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the train was detained at the Mathura railway station for over two hours early Tuesday.

‘The bomb squad first frisked the bag after which it was opened. The girl appears to be about 15 years old,’ GRP inspector Santosh Kumar told IANS.

6 of family commit suicide in Allahabad due to financial crisis

Allahabad, September 01: Six members of a family, including four children, committed suicide by jumping before a speeding train on the Allahabad- Varanasi section near Sarai Inayat area today.

According to reports, the poor family took the drastatic step due to financial crisis.

SSP/DIG Chandra Prakash said here that police was investigating the incident but confirmed that family dispute and poverty could be the reasons for the step.

Senior held for ragging girl student in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, September 01: A student of the Government Engineering College here has been arrested for ragging his junior. He had asked the girl to hug him, police said Tuesday.

Praveen Mishra, a seventh semester student of Mechanical Engineering, was held Monday from his college in Shej Bahar area on the outskirts of Raipur after a fifth semester computer science engineering student reported ragging.

‘The student has a history of misbehaving with juniors. he was arrested for ragging the girl student and has been put in jail,’ police station in-charge R.C. Lahri told IANS.

Criminals loot passengers of Toofan Express in UP

Fatehpur, September 01: Armed criminals looted the passengers of a general coach of Howrah bound Toofan Express here last night between Kanpur and Allahabad railway stations under the North Central Railway.

Railway police sources here today said four criminals looted Rs 8,000 and four mobiles from three people near Khaga station and later fled after the train slowed down near Kapedhan station.

A case has been filed at the GRP Allahabad station.

Even cops aren’t safe, robbers target inspector’s house

New Delhi, September 01: A Delhi Police Inspector became the latest target of robbers in the Capital when six armed men barged into his residence and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 2.75 lakh at gunpoint, police said on Monday.

The incident took place in the Ashok Vihar residence of Sanjeev Kumar, an Inspector with Traffic Police at around 2130 hrs IST on Sunday, a senior police official said.

The six masked men barged into Kumar’s residence in his absence and asked the women present at gunpoint to hand over jewellery and cash.

Six labourers die as truck plunges into canal

Bhubaneswar, September 01: Six people were killed and 18 others injured in a road accident when a truck carrying about 55 labourers overturned and fell into Rengali left canal near Birasal village under Kankadahad block in Dhenkanal district last night.

While five bodies were retrieved from the canal last night, one more body, trapped inside the vehicle, was recovered today during the rescue operation.

Few more bodies were still trapped inside the truck, the sources said.

Five dead in Orissa truck accident

Bhubaneswar, September 01: At least five people were killed and 11 sustained injuries after the truck they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a canal in Orissa’s Dhenkanal district, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place near Rahani village, some 85 km from the district headquarters of Dhenkanal, late Monday night but the bodies were spotted only Tuesday after the police reached the spot.

‘Five people have been killed. Eleven people, who sustained injuries, are undergoing treatment,’ District Superintendent of Police Satish Gajbhiye told.

Designer Anand Jon gets 59 years for rape

Los Angeles, September 01: Indian-born fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander convicted of sexually assaulting several girls and young women was Monday sentenced to 59 years in prison by a Los Angeles court.

The designer, who appeared on the reality television show “America’s Next Top Model”, was convicted of 16 charges, including rape and sexual assault in November.

According to prosecutors, he enticed the girls, mostly aspiring models, with the promise of modelling jobs and forced them into sex, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Three government employees arrested in graft case in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, September 01: Three state government employees including prohibition and excise superintendent were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in an illegal gratification case in Andhra Pradesh today.

Srinivas Rao accepted the money on behalf of Chandramouleswara Rao, superintendent, and P Prabhakar Raju, assistant prohibition and excise superintendent, Tenali, who demanded the bribe from S Nageswara Rao, owner of a restaurant and bar for granting permission for alteration in the design of his bar.

Man arrested for raping German girl 12 years ago

New Delhi: The Delhi crime branch arrested a transport company owner in Punjab for allegedly raping a German girl in Germany 12 years ago when he was illegally living there.

Jaswant Singh lived in Germany from 1992 to 1997. He worked as a cook in a hotel. There he befriended Karan Singh and Mohammad Shahzad. On August 2, 1997, the trio spotted a 17-year-old girl walking alone after she had missed her train. They dragged her to a nearby park and raped her. Later, they beat her up.

Heroin worth Rs.200 mn seized in Punjab

Amritsar, September 01: The Punjab Police arrested five people here Monday and recovered four kilograms of heroin from their possession, officials said.

According to a senior official of Punjab Police, the seized contraband is worth Rs.200 million (Rs.20 crore) in the international market.

“We had got a tip-off from our source that some smugglers were going in a Alto car to deliver the drugs to some peddler. We laid a trap and arrested five of them while one of them managed to escape,” the official said.

2,000 criminals arrested in a single day

Lucknow, September 01: Nearly 2,000 criminals were arrested from different parts of Uttar Pradesh since last evening during a special drive launched by the police, a senior officer said here today.

“During the drive, 1947 persons wanted in different cases and 53 criminals carrying cash reward were arrested from different parts of the state. Non-bailable warrant was served on 1833 accused,” he said.

Man who raped teenager in Germany 12 years ago arrested

New Delhi, August 31: After months of investigation, the Delhi Police arrested from the national capital a man who had allegedly raped a teenager in Germany 12 years ago, police said on Monday.

Jaswant Singh, 36, was arrested on Sunday night from his house in Adarsh Nagar area in northwest Delhi.

“The accused went to Germany in 1992 and was staying there illegally. In 1997, he along with two of his friends Karan Singh, an Indian, and Mohammad Shahzad, a Pakistani, assaulted and raped a 17-year-old German girl at Darmstadt in Germany,” a senior police officer said.

Contract killer’s death penalty converted to life imprisonment

New Delhi, August 31: The Delhi High Court Monday converted the sentence of a contract killer who had killed a witness six years ago from death penalty to life imprisonment on the grounds that the case did not fall in the category of rarest of the rare.
Mani Gopal had murdered the witness, an eunuch, inside the Tis Hazari court premises in 2003 when she was going to record her evidence in a murder case.

Sub-inspector granted bail

Guntur, August 31: Ponnur police sub-inspector B Ranganath Gowd, arrested for allegedly cheating a girl, was granted bail today.

Gowd was arrested on August 18 for allegedly cheating a girl by having a relationship with her on the pretext of marrying her.

Businessman shot dead in Greater Noida

Greater Noida, August 31: A businessman was shot dead while another was critically injured when two motorcycle borne assailants fired at them here, police said Monday.

The incident occurred late Sunday in the Dadri area of Greater Noida.

“Vinod Goel, president of the Dadri Vyapar Sangh was travelling on a motorcycle with another businessman Manoj Goel, when two motorcycle borne assailants opened fire on them,” a police officer said.

Man kills self after `losing’ job

Bangalore, August 31: A software engineer from Andhra Pradesh, who had lost his job over a year ago, committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train on Saturday night. Railway police said he may have been depressed after losing his job.

His body was found on the tracks between Thanisandra and Nagawara. The deceased Nagaraj, 30, from Vizag, was working with a software company here, police said.

4 held for ‘killing’ helper in NE Delhi

Ghaziabad, August 31: The Ghaziabad police has arrested four persons for allegedly murdering a 25-year-old bus helper. The accused have been identified as two of the biggest bus transporters in northeast Delhi Sanjeev Juneja and Ramesh Maurya. The two others arrested are Veerpal and Dipak, employees of the two accused.

Doctors’ strike enters fifth day in Patna, claims 38 lives

Patna, August 31: A five-day-old strike by the junior doctors in a hospital in Patna has claimed the lives of at least 38 patients even as the Bihar government on Monday served notices to the medicos and asked them to return to work or face action, an official said.

A day after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his anger at the doctors’ strike that has paralysed health services in the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Health Secretary C K Mishra served notices on doctors asking them to report back to duty.

2 criminals killed in police encounter

Ghaziabad, August 31: HAZIABAD: Police on Monday gunned down two criminals who allegedly fled in a vehicle of a doctor here after threatening him.

The two unidentified outlaws in their 20s, beat up a doctor around 2:30 AM today and took away his car, SSP Ghaziabad Akhil Kumar said.

Following a complaint by the doctor, the police swung into action and challenged them, he said adding that in the exchange of fire the duo was killed. Some arms were recovered from the spot.

A policeman was injured in the encounter and was rushed to hospital, he said.

The victim Manoj Kewat who hailed from Uttar Pradesh succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment atP6-3.TIM on Saturday.

Investigators on suspicion picked up Arjun Kewat from the same locality on Saturday night. During interrogation, he broke down and revealed that he killed Manoj Kewat as he suspected him of having an extra-marital affair with his wife.
