Police arrests three for theft at Kareena’s house

Mumbai, October 17: Police today claimed to have cracked a case of theft that took place at actress Kareena Kapoor’s suburban Khar residence with the arrest of her three domestic helps, who have confessed to the crime.

A pearl set and a ring collectively worth Rs 41,000 and Rs 1.53 lakh in cash were recovered from them, police said.

The incident occurred on October 8 at Kapoor’s residence and police said that the trio had stolen cash and other belongings valued at Rs 2.50 lakh from the actor’s house.

Naxals kill youth in Gadchiroli

Nagpur, October 17: Naxals killed a youth in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district suspecting him to be a police informer, police said on Saturday.

A group of Naxals dragged out Mahendra Kumar Fulsingh Narote (26) of his house in Kulbhatti area and slit his throat late on Friday night, they said.

20-year-old commits suicide in Noida

Noida, October 17: A 20-year-old student on Oct 16 committed suicide by hanging himself in Chhalera locality of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

Rohit Chowdhury, a first-year BBA student of a private management college, was found hanging in his room around 11 a.m. He stayed at a rented accommodation in Chhalera locality in Sector-37 of Noida.

“In the morning, when neighbours knocked his door, nobody responded. After suspicion, the door was broken and Rohit was found hanging from the ceiling fan,” a police officer said.

Fire in Kashmir university’s hostel

Srinagar, October 17: Fire today broke out in a Kashmir university’s boys hostel in Hazratbal area, but there was no casualty, fire services spokesman said.

The fire, which erupted at around 8.25 am in the hostel building, could only be controlled after four hours.

The spokesman said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

Margao blast: Two detained

Panaji, October 17: Two persons were detained today in connection with the explosion in Margao town in Goa in which a member of a right-wing Hindu group allegedly linked to Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh was killed and another critically injured.

The blast took place at around 9.30 pm last night when explosives kept in a scooter went off on a busy street in the heart of the town, 30 kms from here.

Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik said police were probing the links of right-wing group Sanatan Saunstha with the blast.

Toll in TN cracker shop fire rises to 32; two arrested

Chennai, October 17: The toll in a devastating fire at a wholesale cracker shop here climbed to 32 today with recovery of two more bodies from the site, even as its owner and another man were arrested in connection with the Diwali-eve mishap.

The blaze erupted at the cracker godown, which was a wholesale point of firecrackers, at around 7 pm last evening due to suspected short-circuit, police said.

Red alert in Goa after blast

Panaji, October 17: Goa has declared a red alert after explosives carried on a scooter by two men went off, killing one of them and critically injuring the other, in Margao town in southern part of the state. Officials have blamed a right-wing Hindu group for the incident.

State Home Minister Ravi Naik said the scooter belonged to Nishad Bakhale, an alleged member of the Sanatan Saunstha, a right-wing Hindu group, headquartered in the temple town of Ramnathi in the Ponda region of Goa. Bakhale has been detained for questioning by the police.

Cops suspect Pune techie was raped

Pune, October 17: Naina Abhijit Pujari, the 28-year-old techie who was found murdered in Pune on October 8, may have been gang-raped by the suspects in the case, the police said on Friday. Pujari was found dead in Rajgurunagar, about 35 km from Pune, off the Pune-Nashik highway with her head smashed with a stone. The police said she was strangulated with her dupatta and that her head was smashed to mislead investigators.

Cops molest pregnant woman, beat up minor children

Kendrapara, October 17: A pregnant woman, hailing from here, on Friday lodged a police complaint alleging that a group of police personnel barged into her house last night, molested her and beat up her two minor children.

In her complaint filed with the Kendrapara superintendent of police, Anwara Biwi claimed that the policemen who came in two jeeps broke open main gate of her house, hurled abusive language at her, beat her with batons and molested her at gunpoint.

On Diwali eve, 30 feared killed, many injured in TN cracker fire

Chennai, October 17: Nearly 30 feared dead and several injured in a cracker shop fire accident on Friday night in Palipattu village in Thiruvallur district.

The cracker shop was functioning out of a godown located behind a rice mill and on the eve of Diwali many people were there buying crackers.

Suddenly fire started and gutted down the cracker shop killing nearly 30 and injuring several.

Two fire tenders doused the fire. The Pallipattu police are investigating.

Two college going students crushed to death.

Amritsar, October 16: Two students who were on way to their college were crushed to death, when the motorcycle they were riding was crushed by a truck at Grand Trunk Road here today, police said.

Confirming the accident, SHO of Police Station Gharinda, Sukhwinder Singh said that mishap occurred when two students of class 12th Jagjit Singh and Avtar Singh were riding their motorcycle crushed by a speedy truck.

Both the students killed on the spot and their bodies were sent for autopsy and would be handed over to the family for last rites, said police.

Brother of HuA commander arrested with over Rs two lakh

Kishtwar(J&K), October 16: Police arrested a person in connection with Rs 1.06 crore robbery in Jammu and Kashmir Bank here and recovered from him over Rs two lakh, a police spokesman said here today.

Shahid Hussain, brother of slain divisional commander of Harkat-ul-Ansar (HuA), was taken into custody recently from Keshwan village in Kishtwar district and stolen money of J&K Bank were recovered at his instance.

With this arrest, police has so far arrested six accused and recovered Rs 51,43,410 in connection with the bank robbery case, he said.

Three of family found killed in Noida

Noida, October 16: Three members of a family living in a slum here were found killed in Sector 99, police said.

The deceased were identified as Birju (45) his wife Indira (40) and daughter Pinki (13).

Police said unidentified assailants killed them and their bodies found dragged out of the house.

Goa serial killings: 2 Goans arrested from Mumbai

Panaji, October 15: In a major breakthrough in the serial killings case, Goa Police arrested two persons who had fled to Mumbai for allegedly murdering a 16-year-old girl and later burning her body.

Chandrakant Talwar (35) and Sairan Rodrigues (20) were arrested for killing Evita Rodrigues, whose body was found at Verna village in a charred condition.

“Two Goans arrested in Mumbai have confessed of killing the girl and burning her. We are not ruling out their hand in other killings, which were done in a similar style,” Deputy IGP Ravindra Yadav told reporters here.

Ghatkopar custodial death: HC hands over probe to CBI

Mumbai, October 16: The Bombay High Court today handed over to CBI the probe into custodial death of an under-trial here, suspended three policemen in connection with the incident and directed that offence of murder be registered against them.

Altaf Shaikh (22) was arrested last month in connection with a house-breaking case and taken to suburban Ghatkopar police station on September 9. He was found dead in the lock-up next morning.

According to the police, he died due to drug overdose but the postmortem report revealed several injuries on his body.

Nine naxals arrested in Bastar

Raipur, Oct ober 16: Nine naxalites have been arrested from Bastar district of Chattisgarh along with arms and other materials, police said today.

The extremists were held last night from Bawdi, Kokodbhata and Chamai villages of the naxal-hit district, after a tip off about naxal activities in these areas, Bastar SP P Sundaraj told PTI.

A search party was sent to these spots and nine outlaws identified as Asaram, Doorsaray, Ramchandra, Manghar, Baju, Jairam, Narsingh, Nohru and Lalu were held, he said.

WB Leader of Oppn arrested from Writers’ Buildings

Kolkata, October 16: Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Partha Chatterjee, and three Trinamool Congress MLAs were arrested today after they went on a dharna before the chief minister’s office at the state secretariat demanding Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s arrest.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special branch-I) Partha Sarathi Ghosh said they were arrested and taken to the Lalbazar police headquarters.

Two ULFA militants surrender

Guwahati, October 16: Two hardcore ULFA militants today surrendered to the army in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, official sources said.

They were identified as self styled ‘Sergeant Major’ Jitul Saikia alias Asim Kachari and Ajad Saikia.

The militants, who surrendered at the Dinjan army camp, deposited an AK-56 rifle and a pistol, the sources said, adding their interrogation is on.

Amazing escape for baby that fell under train

Sydney, OCtober 16: six-month-old baby fell beneath a train as its pushchair rolled off a station platform in Melbourne – but survived with just a bump to its head.

The baby’s mother let go off the pushchair just as the train came into the station. Then watched in horror as the pushchair was run over.

Australian news sites report that ambulance officers found the baby virtually unharmed.

Conroy was caught when a neighbour of Conroy became aware of the video and alerted the police.

In the shocking film footage, Conroy can be heard guffawing with laughter and at one point someone is heard saying: “She’ll smoke it all herself.”

A reference is also made to cannabis – sparking fears the cigarette could have contained the drug.

Patient shot dead in Ghaziabad hospital

Ghaziabad, October 16: A patient in a private hospital in Ghaziabad was shot dead by three unidentified youths Thursday, police said.

According to Assistant Sub Inspector Police (in charge border circle) Happy Guptan, Amit Sharma, a resident of Harsh Vihar in Delhi, was admitted to the Swami Nand Lal Hospital at Shalimar Garden with pancreatic problems Monday.

Couple in Uttar Pradesh forced to become siblings

Lucknow, October 16: Repeatedly slapping a love-struck couple with shoes for their ‘illegitimate’ love affair, an Uttar Pradesh village council forced them to tie rakhi and become siblings, police said.

The incident occurred late Wednesday in Kukra village in Bijnor district, about 350 km from here.

Pintoo Sharma, 30, and his 28-year-old lover were brought before a village panchayat when they were found sitting together in a garden on Wednesday evening, locals said.

Wife sets husband ablaze in Tamil Nadu

Erode, October 16: Unable to bear her husband’s harassment, a woman set him ablaze in Gobichettipalayam Taluk in the district, police said today.

Police said the 50-year-old Palanisamy used to drink and beat Senniammal, five years younger to him, and they often quarrelled.

On Saturday last, Palanisamy came home in an inebriated state and quarrelled with Senniammal. Unable to put up with his behaviour any more, she pushed him down, poured kerosene and set him ablaze. He died on the spot, police said.

She then put the charred body in a garbage bin and covered it with debris and mud.

HC summons doctors who conducted post-mortem

Mumbai, October 16: Additional commissioner of police (ACP) Prakash Wani filed a reply in the Bombay high court on Thursday, claiming that the cops, who lifted an “intoxicated” Altaf Sheikh, 22, in their arms, and carried him to the police station, had simply made a “humane gesture”.

Sheikh’s mother, Mehrunisa, has moved the high court, alleging a custodial killing by the
