One killed, 12 injured as pipe crashes on Mumbai train

Mumbai, October 23: A huge water pipe came crashing down on a running train in northeast Mumbai Friday morning, killing one person, injuring at least 12 commuters and trapping the driver.

The pipe as well as a bridge being built to support it collapsed, officials from the Central Railway and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said. The accident occurred between Mulund and Thane.

Pipeline crashes on running train in Mumbai, six hurt

Mumbai October 23: A huge water pipe came crashing down on a running train between Mulund and Thane in northeast Mumbai Friday morning, injuring at least six commuters and trapping the driver.

There were no immediate reports of any deaths in the incident that saw the collapse of the pipe as well as that of a bridge being built to support it, officials from the Central Railway and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said.

Almost two hours after the incident, the train driver, identified as Ramachandran, remained trapped inside the engine compartment.

Australian jailed for racist attack on Indian student

Melbourne, October 23: A group of youths nearly killed an Indian student during an armed assault in a grocery store in this Australian city for the “sheer thrill” of the attack, a judge said here while sentencing one of the attackers to jail.

Carrying wooden planks ripped up from a nearby bus stop seat, the seven youths raided the Impex shop in Sunshine yelling “Are you Indian?” Then they randomly hit their victims Dec 1 last year, the County Court heard Friday.

There has been a string of assaults on Indian students in Australia, causing an uproar in India.

Acid burn victim gets justice after 10 years

Kanpur, October 23: Nearly a decade after the son of a bureaucrat threw acid on her face, she at last got justice from a local court in this Uttar Pradesh city that pronounced a 10-year jail term for the accused.

Holding Abhinav, the son of then deputy sales tax commissioner Rajesh Pratap Misra, “guilty”, Kanpur Fast Track Court Judge Pramod Kumar pronounced the verdict in the open court here on Wednesday.

While handing down a 10-year imprisonment for Abhinav, the court also slapped a fine of Rs 5.lakh on him.

Police bust sex racket, nine held

Varanasi, October 23: Police today busted a sex racket and arrested nine persons, including three women, from the Pali Bazar area of Jaunpur district, 60 kms from here.

Police said acting on a tip-off, police raided the house of Mandawati Devi, the kingpin of the sex racket, and arrested her along with eight others this evening.

Investigation is on to know about other persons involved in the trade.

Former Uruguayan dictator condemned to 25 years in jail

Montevideo (Uruguay), October 23: Former Uruguayan dictator Gregorio Alvarez was condemned Thursday to 25 years in jail for his involvement in the deaths of scores of leftist activists during the 1973-85 dictatorship.

Judge Luis Charles also condemned retired Navy official Juan Carlos Larcebeau to 20 years in jail.

In Dec 2007 Alvarez had been sent to jail to await trial over the killings of 37 activists, while Larcebeau was being tried over 29 deaths.

Alvarez, 86, did not attend the hearing Thursday due to alleged health problems.

Former VC succumbs to injuries

Gorakhpur(UP), October 22: Former Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi Professor Bhaskar Mishra succumbed to his wounds at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow yesterday, family sources said here today.

He was 67. The Professor, his nephew and daughter-in-law (Devanand and Meenakhsi) were seriously injured, when dacoits looted his house in adjoining Deoria district on Diwali eve.

Dreaded criminal arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, October 22: A dreaded criminal wanted in around a dozen cases of murder and abduction was arrested in the national capital, police said Thursday.

Sanjay Singh, who was evading police for the past 11 years, was arrested by Delhi Police Crime Branch from the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road Wednesday, a police officer said.

Singh was carrying a reward of Rs.25,000. He was also involved in murder cases in Nepal.

Police have recovered a gun and live cartridges from his possession.

Boutique owner kills wife’s lover

New Delhi, October 22: A boutique owner beat a tailor who worked in his shop to death after he caught him with his wife in Najafgarh in west Delhi, police said Thursday.

Bhagwan Das (38), a boutique owner in Koknola Road, Dharampura, killed his help Mohammed Gurfan (28) after he found him involved in a relationship with his wife. Gurfan was a tailor at his boutique for the past five years.

Mock drill conducted at Kochi airport

Kochi, October 22: A full-scale mock drill, aimed at assessing the preparedness of various agencies in tackling emergencies, was today conducted at Kochi international airport.

The agencies were alerted when a flight caught “fire” while moving to the taxiway prior to take off with 35 passengers and crew this afternoon. Rescue personnel evacuated those on board after fire service personnel extinguished the blaze, airport sources said.

Police arrest civic body chief for Gambling

Bundi(Rajasthan), October 22: Police today arrested chairman of Municipality Board, Lekhari and six others while gambling with money and play cards on Thursday noon.

Chotmal Nager, a local BJP leader and six other were later released on bail.

SHO of Lekhari police station Neraj Gupta said that on receiving tips about the gambling, police raided a brick furnace on Bundi Road this afternoon and caught Chotmal Nager, Chairman of Lekhari Municipality Board and six others red handed playing cards and recovered rupees 70, 000.

Maoists free abducted West Bengal police officer

Kolkata, October 22: After threatening to kill him, Maoists freed abducted police officer Atindranath Dutta in West Bengal Thursday evening, almost three days after they kidnapped him, in a swap with a group of Maoist women activists.

Aeound noon, a West Bengal court released 14 tribal women from jails, which was one of the conditions laid down by the rebels for Dutta’s freedom. The women were jailed for their alleged links with the Maoists.

Man cut off genitals to join eunuch beggars

Jaipur, October 22: An Indian man cut off his genitals in an attempt to join the country’s eunuchs and increase his begging income.

The man had been pleading for money on the Hindu festival of Diwali before going home and mutilating himself in Rajasthan state.

Mafia dons humbled at the ballot

Mumbai, October 22: Two former underworld bosses, Arun Gawli of Mumbai and Suresh alias Pappu Kalani of Ulhasnagar in Thane district, bit the dust in Maharashtra’s assembly polls, results of which were declared today.

Gawli, or ‘Daddy’ as he is popularly referred to by his supporters was trounced from Byculla constituency for his second stint in the Maharashtra legislature by Congressman Madhu Chavan.

Similarly, Kalani, a four-time legislator, was humbled at the hands of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kumar Ailani.

Two women raped and murdered in Manipur

Imphal, October 22: Two women were allegedly raped and murdered in Imphal east district of Manipur, police said today.

The body of 18-year old Okram Tamphasana, who had gone missing yesterday along with her relative P Momcha, was found from Keirao area of the district with injury marks. She was bludgeoned to death with a heavy weapon after being raped.

Momcha was still missing, they said.

In a separate incident, Sapam Memton (35) was called out of her home by a friend yesterday, who was yet to be identified. Memton’s body was recovered from Pukhao area with injury marks today.

Day after Mathura train accident, tracks cleared

Agra, October 22: A day after an accident involving two trains killed 23 people in Mathura, the railways Thursday had cleared the track and traffic movement was restored, officials said.

North Central Zone Divisional Manager R.M. Tripathi said: “Two things are evident. One, the driver of the Goa Express did not keep to the speed limit of 10 km per hour. He either ignored the signal or there was some defect in the signal system which probably showed red instead of green or vice versa.

10-year-old dies in Kashmir mine explosion

Srinagar, October 22: A 10-year-old boy was killed and a girl injured when a mine exploded in Gurez sector of north kashmir’s Bandipura district Thursday, a senior police official said.

The boy and his cousin were fiddling with a mine in Telial area of the Line of Control in Gurez sector.

“The 10-year-old boy died on the spot and his cousin was critically injured when a mine they fiddled with exploded,” a police officer said.

Serial rapist-killer arrested in Karnataka

Bangalore, October 21: A man, alleged to have raped and killed at least 18 women in the past five years, was arrested in Karnataka’s Mangalore town, police said Wednesday.

“Accused Mohan Kumar alias Anand (46) has been arrested under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 302 and 376 for his alleged involvement in rape and murder of 18 or more women in the last five years,” Mangalore Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao told IANS by phone.

Five killed in road accident in Andhra

Vijayawada, October 21: Five persons were killed when a car carrying them was hit by an oil tanker in Krishna district this evening, police said.

The incident occurred near Kanchkacharla village when the car, which was coming from Hyderabad was hit by an oil tanker coming from the opposite direction, they said.

All the five persons occupying the car died on the spot, police said adding that their bodies have been sent to a nearby government hospital

Male foetus recovered from the toilet of Civil Hospital

Jalandhar, October 21: A male foetus was today recovered from a toilet of the Civil Hospital here.

The foetus was spotted in the toilet outside the laboratory by a sweeper when he went there to clean the toilet in the morning, hospital authorities said.

Medical Superintendent Ashok Nayar said the age of the foetus would be ascertained only after post-mortem and the matter had been reported the police.

Gujarat police to seek custody of SIMI men caught in MP

Ahmedabad, October 21: Gujarat police would be seeking custody of the two SIMI men arrested by Madhya Pradesh ATS as they are accused in the 2008 serial blasts case, a top senior police official said today.

The accused, Mohammed Shafiq (31), Mohammed Yunus (31), Sheikh Shazid (34), Arshad Khan (22), and Feroz Khan (21), arrested today by the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad, were trained at terror camps organised by the banned outfit in Waghamon and Halol, a senior police official said.

Another farmer committs suicide in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, October 21: A farmer weighed down by debt today committed suicide taking the toll of distressed farmers resorting to such an act to five in the past 15 days in Orissa.

The latest victim was identified as Sunil Sutar from Murtum-6 village under Umarkote police station area of Nawrangpur district. His body was recovered from a paddy field which was seriously affected by drought and pest attack.

“He has incurred a loan of Rs 40,000 from a bank, Rs 20,000 from two Self-Help groups and Rs 5,000 from a money lender”, Nirmal Sutar, elder brother of the deceased, said.

GPF scam unearthed, three arrested

Jalandhar, October 21: Police today claimed to have busted a GPF (General Provident Fund) scam worth Rs 1.5 crores in Primary Health Centre of Muzaffarpur police station with the arrest of three persons.

The three arrested include a Senior Medical Officer, a pharmacist cum accountant who was kingpin of the scam and a health worker, while two former SMOs of the centre are on the run after a Sessions court rejected their bails.

IT seizes Rs 1.52 crore in unaccounted assets

Jaipur, October 2: The Income-Tax department today said it had seized Rs 1.52 crore in unaccounted assets, including Rs 1.26 crore in cash, in raids conducted at a sweet shop chain here.

IT (Investigation) Prasenjeet Singh told PTI that the raids were conducted immediately after Diwali at eight places, including the chain of shops in the city.
