Berlusconi: I have nothing to hide

Rome, August 08: Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi made one of his strongest denials yet in a scandal over alleged relationships with young women, insisting on yesterday he has nothing to hide and nothing to apologize for.

Berlusconi responded to apparent criticism from his daughter, Barbara, who said in an interview with a magazine this week that politicians cannot afford to differentiate between their public and private spheres and should work to improve moral values.

Little Kiran plays Little Amitabh

Mumbai, August 08: Kiran Shah, a 53 year old actor of Indian origin who has acted in several Hollywood films since the 1970s, has been chosen to play the five-year old Amitabh Bachchan in Paa.

In the movie, Amitabh Bachchan plays a character who suffers from Progeria because of which he ages at an alarming rate. Kiran or as he is better know, Little Kiran was brought all the way from London to play the younger Amitabh.

Homeopathy can prevent, cure swine flu, say homeopaths

New Delhi, August 08: Homeopathy can both prevent and cure swine flu, sans any side effects, say doctors who practise this alternative medicine system in India where over 700 people have been diagnosed with the disease.

Amid panic over the spread of influenza A (H1N1) virus, homeopaths are now drafting a proposal for the health ministry to offer their services in tackling the crisis.

“Based on the symptoms, homeopathy can offer an effective cure to swine flu. Moreover, it does not have any side effects,” Harcharanjeet Kaur, a homeopath at Baksons homeopathy clinic, told IANS.

Lucknow, August 08: A sprawling bungalow in Lucknow’s posh Mall Avenue saw dramatic developments Friday evening when it was surrounded by bulldozers and a large battery of local officials, all ready to pull it down. The owner, an advocate, has accused the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of ‘plotting’ to grab his prime property.

As word spread about the demolition plan, some TV channels and photo journalists descended on the spot, compelling the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) officials to beat a hasty retreat.

Afghan mission ‘could last 40 years’

London, August 08: The new head of the Army is warning that Britain’s mission in Afghanistan could last in some form for up to 40 years.

General Sir David Richards, who becomes Chief of the General Staff later this month, said in a newspaper interview: “I believe that the UK will be committed to Afghanistan in some manner – development, governance, security sector reform – for the next 30 to 40 years.”

Los Angeles, August 08: Pop diva Britney Spears will receive a special award at the 2009 Teen Choice awards Sunday.

The “Womanizer” singer, who is due to perform at the annual event in California’s Universal City, will be presented with the ultimate choice award for her “extraordinary contributions to the entertainment industry”, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

London, August 08: MI5 faces claims that it misled MPs during a parliamentary investigation into Britain’s complicity in torture and rendition during the “war on terror”.

The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC), which oversees the work of the security service, MI5, has been asked to reopen a report it concluded two years ago following damning findings about the activities of secret agents in Pakistan, Morocco and London.

Snakes kill over 6,000 Bangladeshis every year

Dhaka, August 08: Over 6,041 die from snake bites every year in Bangladesh against a global statistics of some 150,000 deaths, a report said in Dhaka on Saturday quoting a nationwide survey carried out by the directorate general of health.

At least 623 people in every 100,000 population or nearly six lakh people in the country are bitten by snakes every year, while the previous reports suggested that only 2,000 died every year while some 10,000 were exposed to snakebites, Prothom Alo newspaper said citing the report.

IIT Punjab to start working from its new campus from Aug 20

New Delhi, August 08: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Punjab will start functioning from its new campus on August 20, after an year of parenting at the IIT Delhi.

The institute will function with last year’s batch and the new batch of around 240 students in three disciplines from Rupnagar (formerly Ropar), around 60 km from Chandigarh.

“The institute will start operation with 11 teachers and around 15 professors of IIT Delhi will continue to help them in taking classes,” IIT Delhi Director Surendra Prasad said on Friday.

Baitullah Mehsud is alive: Pak Taliban

New Delhi, August 08: In a new twist, a militant commander and deputy to Baitullah Mehsud on Saturday reportedly said that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief is alive.

Baitullah is hiding at a covert place, Hakimullah Mehsud said, refuting earlier reports that the Pak Taliban chief was killed in a US drone attack in South Waziristan on August 05.

According to the latest news report, Hakimullah claimed that Baitullah was still holding the command of Taliban fighters. The Taliban commander further vowed to release a recorded video of Baitullah in the coming days.

Buddhist monks pray for rain in Bihar

Patna, August 08: Hundreds of Buddhist monks in Bihar have been performing special prayers and rituals at the Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya to appease the rain god and end the ongoing dry spell in the state.

“We began special puja from Thursday at the Mahabodhi temple of Bodh Gaya to seek blessings of god for rains. Our puja will continue till Aug 12,” in-charge of Bodh Gaya centre of Mahabodhi Society of India P. Sivali Thera told media.

Bodh Gaya is considered the birthplace of Buddhism. Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment about 2,550 years ago at this place.

‘Mehsud’s death may embolden Pakistanis’

Washington, August 08: Pakistan’s most wanted terrorist Baitullah Mehsud’s death may actually embolden the Pakistanis as it marks a weakening of those Taliban factions that oppose Islamabad, a leading US private intelligence agency has said.

“With more confidence in its influence over the remaining Taliban elements, Pakistan could be even less willing to sell out its Taliban assets in Afghanistan,” the Stratfor said.

Arson in Joshi’s house: Cops’ call records to be checked

Lucknow, August 08: As part of the probe into the arson attack on Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s house, the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) will collect call details of several senior policemen, officials here said today.

“By analysing the call records we will be able to assess the locations of the policemen at the time of the arson incident,” a senior CB-CID official told media on condition of anonymity.

Pakistani militants form groups to free associates

Islamabad, August 08: Pakistani militants have formed two groups to free their comrades from various prisons in the country, a media report said.

The two groups named Lashkar Omar and Lashkar Abu Jandal will devise strategies to free their associates who were captured during the military operation in northwest Pakistan, the Online news agency reported on Friday. There are also suicide bombers in the groups.

Obama unlikely to stop by Hiroshima, Nagasaki while in Japan

Tokyo, August 08: US President Barack Obama is unlikely to stop by Hiroshima and Nagasaki during his possible visit to Japan in November because he would not be here long enough to do so, a senior Japanese Foreign Ministry official indicated.

Expectations have been growing in Japan that Obama, who is calling for a nuclear-free world, may visit the two cities that suffered US atomic bombings in 1945, as the ministry is making arrangements for Obama’s possible visit, which would be his first to Japan as US President.

Mexican military uncovers vast drug compound

Mexico City, August 08: Mexican soldiers have taken over a vast compound in central Mexico dedicated to the production, warehousing and distribution of illegal drugs, the military said in a statement.

Soldiers found 22 buildings on the 240-hectare (593-acre) property in Durango state that include laboratories for the production of crystal methamphetamine, the military said yesterday.

The complex includes dormitories, kitchens, rest homes, storage warehouses and laboratories.

It also has “luxury quarters” for the compound manager, the statement read.

Now China warns students in Australia on safety

Melbourne, August 08: After India, it’s now China that has raised concerns about the safety and security of its students in Australia following a vicious road rage attack on four students on the Gold Coast.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned its students in Australia to be “cautious about their security,” The Australian reported on Saturday.

In the third such warning, Beijing said the assault late last month on one of the young students was so severe he suffered a broken cheekbone, the report said.

India relaunches largest auction of oil, gas area

Mumbai, August 08: India today relaunched its largest ever auction of oil and gas exploration areas, aiming to attract USD 3-4 billion investment towards boosting energy security.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora kick-started the offer of 70 oil and gas exploration areas in the 8th edition of New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) and 10 coal bed methane (CBM) blocks with the first roadshow here.

“NELP can be portrayed as India’s success story in our endeavour to achieve self-sufficiency in hydrocarbons,” he said at the promotional roadshow.

Airspeed systems failed on US jets: Report

Washington, August 08: On at least a dozen recent flights by US jetliners, malfunctioning equipment made it impossible for pilots to know how fast they were flying, federal investigators have discovered.

A similar breakdown is believed to have played a role in the Air France crash into the Atlantic that killed all 228 people aboard in June.

The discovery suggests the equipment problems are more widespread than previously believed. And it gives new urgency to airlines already scrambling to replace air sensors and figure out how the errors went undetected despite safety systems.

Eight killed in cloud burst, 24 trapped in debris

Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand), August 08: At least eight people were killed and 24 others trapped in debris after a cloud burst washed away eight houses in Mushiyari block in the district early on Saturday.

The cloud burst followed heavy rains in Lar and Jhegla villages situated on the hill tops, official sources said.

While eight bodies have been recovered, chances of survival of the 24 people trapped in the debris were remote as they have been under the rubble for more than six hours, they said.
