Hyderabad, August 08: When 28-year-old IT computer engineer Sudhakar clambered his way to the reception area at a private hospital in the city, doctors were shocked to discover that the young man had suffered a massive cardiac arrest due to a blockage in the artery. Minutes later, he collapsed at the hospital lobby and was wheeled in to the cardiology department, where his pulse rate registered zero. Twenty three electric shock treatments later, doctors were reportedly on the verge of giving up, as the patient’s heart was not beating.

Deal signed for $250m Dammam Energy Park

Dahran, August 08: An Energy Park will be established at Dammam’s Second Industrial City, for an estimated outlay of $250 million, Saudi Aramco announced.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed between Saudi Aramco and Oilfields Service Contracting Co., OSCC will plan, build, own and operate the complex, the first project of its type in Saudi Arabia to adopt the Common User Supply Base concept.

Under this arrangement, OSCC will provide full-service logistical capabilities, leaving clients to focus on their core business, i.e. oil and gas equipment manufacturing and services.

Intelligence alert has city cops on their toes

Hyderabad, August 08: Security has been beefed up in the Twin Cities following an alert from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) about a possible terror strike on August 15.

The IB had specifically warned about a terror attack in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Delhi.

Following the alert, the Hyderabad city police has intensified patrolling and taken up frisking and checking at various points across the city. “We are sensitising commercial complexes, malls and hotels to take all necessary precautions,” Hyderabad Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao told Expresso.

Man sets himself ablaze

Hyderabad, August 08: Depressed over not getting a house under the Indiramma housing scheme, a person set himself ablaze at his residence.

He is presently undergoing treatment.

According to police, 35-year B Krishna is a resident of Mamidipally in Saroornagar mandal.

The Government reportedly allotted 256 houses under the Indiramma scheme for distribution among the beneficiaries.

Krishna also applied for a house but failed to secure one.

Krishna is reportedly a close relative of a local leader affiliated to the TDP.

Student threatens to throw acid on lecturer

Hyderabad, August 08: In a new dimension to the ongoing harassment of women by lovelorn youngsters, an engineering student was arrested for harassing his former lecturer to marry him.

The lecturer, in fact, had to leave the college unable to bear the harassment but the youth did not relent and continued his chase, police said. The student even threatened to throw acid on the lecturer as she did not respond to his marriage proposal, police said.

Daily water supply on, for now

Hyderabad, August 08: With this year’s monsoon turning out to be a damp squib and water levels in five major reservoirs — Krishna, Singur, Manjira, Osmansagar and Himayathsagar — receding with each passing day, the HMWS&SB would take a review on the daily water supply in November/December month-end.

The combined storage capacity of these five reservoirs is about 39.816 TMC.

Four fresh cases in City

Hyderabad, August 08: Four fresh cases of swine flu were reported in the City today.

Of them, three cases have a foreign travel history and the fourth case is a contact case.

With the latest cases, the total number of swine flu cases reported in the city have gone up to 72.

TRS poser to Centre on K-G gas allocation

Hyderabad, August 08: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and former member of Parliament B Vinod Kumar today demanded that the Central Government announce how much gas from the 6-D unit of Krishna-Godavari Basin it was ready to allocate to Andhra Pradesh.

If the Central Government was not ready to allot sufficient quota, Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy should lead an all-party delegation to put pressure on the Centre to get sufficient gas to meet the State’s needs, he told reporters here today.

Suri shifted to NIMS from Anantapur jail

Hyderabad, August 08: Maddelacheruvu Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri, the prime accused in the killing of former TDP MLA Paritala Ravi, was shifted to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here today from the Anantapur sub-jail for treatment.

Suri, escorted by a battery of police personnel from Anantapur, drove into NIMS in a convoy this morning.

Tight security arrangements were in place in and outside the hospital.

“He is suffering from several health problems. In the past also he was admitted to the NIMS for a few days,’’ a police official said.

Upset Rajakumari thinks of quitting politics

‘Weather-based crop insurance scheme soon’

Hyderabad, August 08: Agriculture Minister N Raghuveera Reddy has stated that the Centre would introduce weather-based insurance scheme soon.

He urged the members of the Assembly to create awareness among the farmers to join the crop insurance scheme and said that insurance to second crop would also be taken up soon.

The minister was replying to a question from Praja Rajyam member B Shobha Nagireddy that whether there was a comprehensive insurance scheme for the crops in the State, during the Question Hour.

Orissa mine official commits suicide

Bhubaneswar, August 08: Orissa’s Deputy Director of Mines (Safety) K.K. Sharma was Saturday found dead in the guest house of the Mahanadi Coalfields in the state’s Brajrajnagar district. Police suspect he committed suicide.
Sharma’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the IB Valley guest house of the Mahanadi Coalfields, where he had come Friday for an inspection.

“We suspect he committed suicide,” Brajrajnagar superintendent of police Kabita Jalan said.

Sotomayor becomes first Hispanic US Supreme Court justice

Washington, August 08: Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in today as a US Supreme Court justice, becoming the first Hispanic justice on the nation’s highest bench.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath in a televised ceremony held in a conference room at Supreme Court.

The New York-born Sotomayor, whose parents came from the US commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is only the third female justice to sit on the Supreme Court in its 220-year history.
