Rights activist urges India, Bangladesh to resolve border deaths

Dhaka, August 09: A visiting Indian human rights activist has urged Dhaka and New Delhi to resolve the issue of border guards shooting dead people infiltrating the porous frontier.

Kirity Roy, secretary of Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha, a non-governmental human rights organisation based in Kolkata, said that such killings should be stopped immediately for the sake of friendly relations between the two countries.

Roy made the observations while talking to New Age newspaper Saturday on the sidelines of a regional workshop on women human rights defenders organised by Odhikar.

Thousands evacuated in China as typhoon Morakot nears

Hangzhou, August 09: More than 953,000 people in two coastal provinces of eastern China were moved to safer places Sunday with predictions of typhoon Morakot approaching fast accompanied by heavy rain.

More than 473,300 residents of Zhejiang have been relocated and some 35,440 ships called back from the sea, the provincial flood-control headquarters said Sunday.

I’m not focussing only on comedies: Shreyas Talpade

New Delhi, August 09: He’s made audiences laugh in several films and has signed on four more comedies, but actor Shreyas Talpade insists he is not concentrating on just humorous films even though he enjoys doing the funny man’s act.

“Attempting comedies is not everyone’s cup of tea…it’s very tough to carry off and my doing comedies has just been a coincidence, as the scripts were very good. But that doesn’t mean I’m doing only comedies. There is a mixed bag of roles that are happening to keep me going as an actor,” Shreyas told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.

Airline blacklisted for dumping 2,500 Pak Umrah pilgrims

Jeddah, August 09: A Gulf airline company may be blacklisted for allegedly causing 2,500 Pakistani Umrah pilgrims to be stranded here past their departure date, sources said.

The Ministry of Haj and General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) are looking into whether the airline has breached its commitment toward the pilgrims who should have been flown back as scheduled in their Umrah program.

Abbas re-elected as Fatah chief

Jerusalem, August 09: Delegates at Fatah’s general conference Saturday re-elected Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as the leader of the party.

The election was unopposed and the members applauded when Tayeb Abdel Rahim, a Fatah official, announced that Abbas would continue to be the general leader of Fatah.

Othman Abu Gharbeya, chief of the convention, officially confirmed the decision.

Boy tests positive for swine flu in Lucknow

Lucknow, August 09: A five-year-old boy, who had arrived here from London last month, has tested positive for the influenza A(HIN1) virus, officials said Saturday.

‘Hasan Rizvi, a native of London who came to Lucknow July 29 to meet his grandparents, has found been positive for swine flu,’ Lucknow chief medical officer A.K. Shukla told reporters.

Rizvi developed flu-like symptoms and was taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) Monday. His throat swab samples were collected and he was discharged after primary medication.

Final Testing Of Air Launched BrahMos, India and Russia

Moscow, August 09: Indian and Russian scientists are close to final development and testing of the air-launched version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

A top Russian defence official said a new takeoff engine for launching of the missile in air and at extreme high altitudes had been developed.

Alexander Leonov, director of the Russian Machine Building Research and Production Centre, said: “we are ready for test launches.”

Prisoners in UP will get chance to pursue education

Lucknow, August 09: Jailbirds lodged in prisons across Uttar Pradesh will now get a chance to pursue education right from the primary level to post graduate degrees including MBAs. In a bid to reform prisoners, the prison department has launched an ambitious project, wherein inmates will be able to attend classes from primary to higher education level besides being allowed to appear in certificate examinations.

Four wounded in Srinagar grenade blast

Srinagar, August 08: Suspected guerrillas hurled a grenade at a paramilitary picket here Saturday evening, injuring two troopers and two civilians, police said.

The grenade was tossed at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker in Habba Kadal area.

‘The grenade exploded near the bunker injuring two CRPF troopers and two civilians. The injured were taken to a hospital,’ a police officer said.

The area was searched but no one was arrested. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Maoists kill two civilians in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh, August 09: The incident took place in Manpur area of western Rajnandgaon district, some 175 km from state capital Raipur.

Maoists killed a local contractor named Deepak and a civilian, Ramswaroop, on suspicion that they were police informers, F.J. Tigga, a police official from Manpur, told IANS.

Rebels killed 29 policemen, including a district superintendent of police, in meticulously planned attacks in Manpur area July 12.

Iran charges French woman, embassy workers with plot

Tehran, August 09: An Iranian court on Saturday charged a French woman, two Iranians working for the British and French embassies in Tehran and dozens of others with spying and aiding a Western plot to overthrow the system of clerical rule.

The European Union, France and Britain all condemned the trial. The Swedish EU presidency said in a statement “action against one EU country, citizen or embassy staff, is considered an action against all of the EU”.

“This is obviously a show trial directed against the EU,” Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told Reuters.

Miliband’s fury as Iranian embassy worker is charged with spying

Tehran, August 09: The Foreign Office reacted with fury last night after a senior worker at the British embassy in Iran was charged with spying.

It condemned as an “outrage” the appearance in court of Hossein Rassam among dozens of accused at a mass trial that began yesterday morning .

Mr Rassam was one of nine British embassy staff arrested in the wake of the massive anti-government protests that followed Iran’s disputed presidential election in June.

NRI in Ahmedabad dies of swine flu, toll rises to 4

Ahmedabad, August 09: A 43-year-old man died of swine flu early this morning at the city civil hospital here, a senior official said.

Confirming the first swine flu death in Gujarat, State Health Secretary Ravi Saxena said Praveen Patel, an NRI, died of swine flu at city civil hospital at around 1.30 am.

“He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition yesterday morning. His left lung was badly damaged,” Mr. Saxena said.

Mr. Patel, who had returned from Atlanta, United States, on July 31, was admitted to a private hospital for pneumonia and common flu on Friday.

TOMATO SOUP RECIPE

Ingredients:

1 1/2 lbs. of ripe tomatoes remove seeds, peeled and chopped
2 tbsp of Olive Oil
1 Onion chopped
1 Clove of garlic crushed
1 Small red pepper chopped (optional)
4 Cups of chicken or vegetable stock
2 oz of tomato paste
1/4 cup of Basil

Preparation:

Heat the oil in a heavy pan, cook the onion, garlic and red pepper till soft.
Add the tomato and cook another 10 minutes.
Add the tomato paste, salt and pepper to taste.
Cover and let simmer for 15 minutes.
Allow to cool slightly and put the mixture in a blender until it is smooth.

PINEAPPLE PUDDING RECIPE

Ingredients:

For Cake
1/2 tin condensed milk
2 cup refined flour (maida)
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp eating soda
1 cup butter
1 tsp pineapple essence
1 tsp yellow colour
For Custard
3 tbsp custard powder
3 cup milk(doodh)
1/2 cup sugar
Other Ingredients
1 tin pineapple
1 packet pineapple jelly
few almond (badam)

How to make pineapple pudding:
Blend condensed milk, butter and sugar properly for making cake.

INDIAN TANDOORI FISH RECIPE

Ingredients:

2 lbs of any white fish fillets (cut into 2-3-inch pieces)
1 tbsp chopped fresh ginger
4 cloves garlic
1/3 cup vinegar
Salt To Taste
1 tbsp ground coriander seeds
1 tbsp ground cumin seeds
1 tsp ground cayenne pepper
1/2 cup vegetable oil

How to make barbecued fish :

Blend together ginger, garlic, vinegar, salt, coriander, cumin, cayenne and oil in the blender to form a fine paste.
Marinate the fish pieces into the paste for about 4 hours in the refrigerator.
Pre-heat the oven on maximum heat at broil.
Cover the oven tray with foil to avoid mess.

INDIAN FISH CURRY RECIPE

Ingredients:

250 gms fish washed, sliced
1 cup coriander leaves chopped
2 tomatoes finely chopped
8 cloves garlic
2 green chillies chopped
1 tsp methi seeds
1 tsp coriander powder
A pinch turmeric powder
Salt To Taste
oil as required.

How to make indian fish curry:

Marinate the fish in salt and turmeric powder for 15 minutes.

Shallow fry the fish pieces, drain and keep aside.

Grind the coriander leaves, garlic and green chillies.

Heat oil, add masala paste and fry till the oil separates out.

RECIPE FOR DEEP FRIED FISH

Ingredients:

700 gms steaks with bone fish
Salt To Taste
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 1/4 cup fresh green coriander
6 green chillies
4 – 6 cloves garlic peeled
3/ 4 cup plain yogurt
oil for deep frying

How to make deep fried fish :

Cut fillets into pieces that are about 5-6. 5 cm long and 4 cm wide.
Spread the pieces out in a single layer in a large plate and sprinkle with about 1/3 tsp of salt and 1 tbs of lemon juice.

Turn the pieces over and repeat with another 1/3 tsp of salt and 1 tbs of lemon juice. Set the plate at a tilt and leave it tilted for 2-3 hours.

French accused in Iran are innocent: families

Tehran, August 09: Relatives of a French lecturer and an embassy staffer who went on trial in Iran Saturday on charges related to the post-election protests, denounced the charges against them.

Both families said they were apolitical — and the son of a French embassy employee said his mother had been coerced into making false confessions.

Nazak Afshar, an Iranian employee of the French embassy who went on trial with French lecuter Remi Reiss, was an “innocent French citizen,” Arash Naimian told AFP in Paris.
