Excise Department mops up Rs 46.71 cr revenue in July

Jammu, August 09: The Excise Department collected revenue of Rs 46.71 crore in July this year, Rs 13.80 crore more than raised in July last year, a top official of the department said.

So far, in the current fiscal, the department registered a hike of Rs 20.82 crore in its revenue collections till July this year as compared to the same period last year, he said.

NTPC likely to set up power plants in Nigeria and Srilanka

Vadodara, August 09: National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), country’s largest power utility, is likely to set up power plants in Nigeria and Srilanka, a top NTPC official said here.

“Proposal is being pursued with the Federal Government of Nigeria for setting up coal and gas based power plants in Nigeria and sourcing of gas for NTPC’s plants in India,” Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC, R S Sharma told yesterday after his visit to 648 MW gas based power plant at Jhanor, about 100 km from here.

Journalist D.P. Kumar dead

New Delhi, August 09: Veteran journalist and former editor of The Statesman D.P. Kumar died of a massive cardiac arrest in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, at 5 p.m. Sunday, his family members said.
“Debu” to his friends, Kumar was 79 and is survived by his wife Bindi, two daughters Shalini and Himani and son Siddharth, who is also a journalist working with the German news agency DPA.

The venue for the last rights was being decided.

100 villages in U’khand prone to natural disasters: Reportv

Dehradun, August 09: About 100 villages in Uttarakhand are prone to natural disasters, a recent official report stated.

According to a report of state’s Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre (DMMC), about 35 villages have been found unsafe in Chamoli district where as in Pithoragarh 23 villages are prone to natural disasters like landslides and earthquakes.

Both Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts are seismically highly sensitive and fall in Zone-V.

Admin to arrest Malaria spread in a week in east Godavari dist

Rajahmundry, August 09: East Godavari District Collector, Gopalakrishna Diwadi said that Malaria fever will be controlled in the tribal areas of the district within a week.

Diwadi said yesterday that 21 vacant posts of doctors will be filled shortly and action will be taken against the medical officials for negligence in their duties in tribal areas.

All necessary medical kit with equipment has been kept ready to control Malaria fever in these areas, he said.

Bulk of swine flu cases from Gurgaon; Sirsa doc tests positive

Chandigarh, August 09: The bulk of swine flu cases from Haryana have been reported from industrial township Gurgaon while a doctor from Sirsa also tested positive for the virus today.

“Out of 38 positive cases of influenza A H1N1, 33 alone are from Gurgaon while today a doctor from Sirsa also tested positive for the virus,” Haryana’s Nodal Officer for the swine flu cases, Dr Aparjita Sondh told.

JK govt submits three project reports to Centre

Srinagar, August 09: Jammu and Kashmir government has submitted three reports on project to the Centre for funding to upgrade the tourism related infrastructure in Zanskar valley in Kargil district.

The projects costing Rs 4.85 crore has been sent to the Union Ministry of Tourism and approval from the Centre would be received soon, state Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora said while chairing a meeting of the Zanskar Tourism Development Authority (ZTDA) here today.

Srinagar, August 09: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has underscored the importance of showcasing state’s potential for adventure sports and said efforts should be made to integrate sports events and tourism activities.

JKSRTC employees defer proposed strike

Srinagar, August 09: Employees of the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation today deferred their proposed strike tomorrow following an assurance by Minister for Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon that the state government is aware of their problems and will solve them.

The assurance was given by the minister to a deputation of SRTC workers union led by its president Shakeel Ahmad Kuchey here today, official sources said.

Akhoon stressed the maintenance of better coordination between workers and management to bring the corporation back on track.

BJP holds road blockade in Thane district

Thane, August 09: Activists of BJP today staged a road blockade and courted arrest across the district to protest against Congress-NCP ruled state government.

The agitation was held at Talasari, Bhayander, Jawhar, Mokhada, Murbad, Vasai and other places that held the traffic in the areas for hours before the party activists were rounded up by police.

Tribals and farmers in the district also took part in the agitation and aired their grievances.

Apologise or resign for remarks, Reeda’s family to Azad

Pune, August 09: Upset with the remarks of union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the family of 14-year-old Reeda Shaikh, India’s first swine flu fatality, has demanded that he either apologise or resign for saying that Reeda could have spread the disease to 80 others while changing hospitals during treatment.

“We want an apology from the government. He (Azad) has hurt a mother… he has blamed our child, Reeda for having infected 80 others by going to four hospitals. He needs to get his facts right,” Reeda’s emotional mother told reporters here today.

Teams to verify original ration cards in east Godavari

Rajahmundry, August 09: District administration of East Godavari District has formed teams to verify the genuine ration cards.

Collector Gopalakrishna Diwadi said 420 verification teams have been formed to verify the ration cards.

The move is aimed at weeding out bogus ration cards, he said.

Diwadi told media persons yesterday that process of verification will be complete in three months.

The main objective of this is to provide ration cards to eligible persons in the state and weed out bogus ration cards, besides providing houses and pension to poor, he said.

Mumbai, August 09: Bipasha Basu’s ex-beau Dino Morea has taken exception to media reports calling them to coming close another time.

The reports have suggested that Dino was dating his ex-girlfriend, Bipasha Basu. Dino’s friend said, “Recently, they did meet at a party and spent some time together, but there is no relationship brewing between the two. Ever since Dino and Bipasha parted ways, they have been friends and wish each other well.”

Congress-led UPA to blame for rise in prices, says BJP

New Delhi, August 09: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday said the spiralling prices of essential commodities was due to the ruling UPA giving more importance to “multinational companies, share holders and power brokers” than the aam admi.

The party plans to hold countrywide protest demonstrations against the price hike on Aug 17.

“Our economist Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is looking at the society through the share market…The current price-rise is because of political reasons rather than the effects of nature,” BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told IANS.
