Manager, henchman held for harassing workers

Ajman, June 02: The Ajman Police arrested two Asians, including a manager of a company and a person who posed as a police officer in an attempt to dissuade the workers from demanding their salaries that were five months overdue and force them to sign documents stating they received the salaries.

According to a police officer, the workers went on strike and refused to work, demanding their salaries.

Imran khan and his relationships

Mumbai, June 02: In a recent interview, Imran Khan opened his heart and spoke about his male and female co-stars.

He also spoke frankly about his relationship with his fiancée Avantika. Imran said, this relationship doesn’t matter to his fans as the Bollywood audience has accepted married stars like Srk, Aamir and Hrithik.

However when asked about his wedding plans, he said because of his busy schedual, wedding is not on the cards this year.

Malayalam writer Kovilan passes away

Thrissur, June 02:Noted Malayalam novelist Kovilan died at a private hospital at Kunnamkulam near here early today.

He was suffering from some respiratory problems, his family said.

Kovilan (87) is survived by two daughters and a son.

A freedom fighter, Kovilan, whose real name was V. V. Ayyappan, worked in the Royal Indian Navy from 1943 to 1946 and from 1948 to 1968 in the Corps of Signals.

Did Sonam and Imran kiss???

Mumbai, June 02: A steamy kissing scene between Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan in ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ has been much talked about lately.

However the actress denies that she has done such a scene. She does however admit that there as some sensuous scenes between the two.

“I have never kissed him. We have done a song Ho Sakta which is sensual. We were quite comfortable doing that as it is a part of the job,” says Sonam.

Ranbir feels uncomfortable with mom Neetu

Mumbai, June 02: Despite director Prakash Jha’s continous persistance, Ranbir refused to share the silver screen with his mother Neetu Kapoor in the film Raajneeti. Ranbir confessed that he is not very comfortable sharing the screen space with his mom.

Now, the role eventually is being enacted by the new 30-year old aspiring actress named Nikhila Tirkha.

Interestingly, Jha was quite keen to zero on someone who totally resembled Ranbir and so, Neetu was the obvious choice. But due to Ranbir’s unknown inhibitions, he had to change his mind and go for Nikhila.

Tamil community Protest against Salman Khan

Mumbai, June 02: Members of Tamil community staged a protest on Sunday against bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan. He is due to visit the 11th IIFA awards ceremony in Colombo from June 3-5.

The Tamil film fraternity has also rejected the idea of an Indian film event in Srilanka. Their main problem with Salman Khan is that, they gave him a letter and he did not accept it.

Popular Tamil actors Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Vijay, Ajith and Surya are also not taking part in IIFA and declined the idea of an Indian film event in IIFA.

Jaganmohan gets Cong go-ahead for tour

New Delhi, Jun 02:Yesterday Congress gave a go-ahead to Y S Jaganmohan Reddy to continue his controversial yatra, apparently to ward off any trouble in Andhra Pradesh party unit ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.

New Delhi, June 02: In a shocking case of corporal punishment, a student’s mother dies of shock on hearing that her son was brutally beaten by a teacher, according to news channel.

On hearing the treatment meted out to her son, Rattanpreet’s mother decided to take the matter up with the school authorities, but unfortunately died of cardiac arrest soon after entering the school premises.

Passerby rescues baby locked in car

Dubai, June 02: A Syrian newscaster, Yaman Shawaf, played the Good Samaritan in rescuing a two-year-old baby in the parking facility of the Mall of the Emirates on Tuesday evening. The Chinese baby was saved from suffering grave consequences after he had been locked in his mother’s BMW car.

The tragedy happened as she returned to her car after finishing shopping and put the baby in the back seat of the vehicle, while trying to put the grocery bags in and all of a sudden, the door was locked. The baby then started crying.

Three gates of Capital’s Corniche closed till June 30

Abu Dhabi, June 02: The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has asked families visiting the Corniche to use Gates 4 and 5, and individuals to use Gate 6 on a temporary basis as Gates 1, 2 and 3 will be closed till June 30 for development works in the area, where new water games and services will be added.

According to the Consultant of Investments and Assets at the municipality, Rashid bin Ali Al
Umairah, the partial closure was because of the development works undertaken to make the beach a world-class recreational avenue fitted with state-of-the-art services.

Most Americans don’t know home broadband speed

Washington, June 02: Eighty percent of Americans do not know the speed of their home Internet broadband connection, but most are satisfied with its performance, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

The survey, conducted for the US Federal Communications Commission, which is seeking to bring high-speed Internet to the entire United States, found that 71 percent of men and 90 percent of women do not know their home broadband speed.

Younger broadband users tend to be slightly more aware of their connection speed than older users, the survey found.

White House backs investigation into Israeli raid

Washington, June 02: The Obama administration walked a fine line in response to Israel’s lethal raid on a flotilla trying to break the blockade of Gaza, calling on Israel to let more aid into the beleaguered territory but stopping short of condemning the U.S. ally for using deadly force.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton supported a U.N. Security Council statement that condemned the “acts” that cost the lives of nine pro-Palestinian activists off the Gaza coast. But U.S. officials did not say whether they blamed Israel or the activists for the bloodshed.

Sensex rebounds, up 106 points in opening trade

Mumbai, June 02: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex recovered by over 106 points in opening trade today, after yesterday’s tumble, on emergence of buying by foreign funds amid a firming Asian trend.

The 30-share index, which had lost 372.60 points in yesterday’s trading, bounced back by 106.06 points, or 0.63 per cent to 16,678.09 points.

Stocks of auto, consumer durables and realty sectors were in the positive zone with gains up to 1.32 per cent.

Likewise, the wide-based National Stock Exchange’s Nifty rose by 31.40 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 5,001.60 points.

Rupee gains 11 paise against dollar in early trade

Mumbai, June 02: The Indian rupee appreciated by 11 paise to 47.05 a dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, helped by gains on the stock market.

The rupee had closed lower by 80 paise – the biggest single-day fall in 15 months – at 47.16/17 against the dollar in yesterday’s trading on a sudden bearish turn in equities.

Forex dealers said fresh capital inflow into equities by foreign funds provided support to the rupee.

High-level US-India talks begin

Washington, June 02: At the beginning of high-level U.S.-India talks, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday the United States has a deep strategic interest in forging strong ties with India and nurturing its emergence as a global power.

The comments by Undersecretary of State William Burns are an attempt to deal with fears in India that relations with the United States have slipped as the Obama administration pursues cooperation with India’s neighboring rivals, China and Pakistan.

Brain behind Ajmer blast identified

Jaipur, June 02: The Anti-Terrorism Squad of Rajasthan is working on the theory that there is a link between the group which carried out the bomb blast at Ajmer Dargah in October 2007 and the forces behind the Malegaon blast almost a year later as well as the explosions at the Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad.

It has identified the contacts and after their recent arrests is in hot pursuit of the person who manufactured the bomb used in the blast at Ahat-e-Noor on the Dargah premises.

Jogging boosts brain power

London, June 02: Jogging a couple of days a week can significantly improve memory, say researchers.

The study led by Cambridge University showed that running triggered the growth of hundreds of thousands of new brain cells in a region that is linked to the formation and recollection of memories.

“We know exercise can be good for healthy brain function, but this work provides us with a mechanism for the effect,” the Telegraph quoted Timothy Bussey, a behavioural neuroscientist at Cambridge and the study’s senior author as telling.

Herbal pill can cut your appetite

New Delhi, June 02: Women can cut their daily calorie intake by almost a fifth if they simply take a herbal diet pill, a research reveals.

The supplement has also been shown to help those with a sweet tooth, reducing the temptation to indulge in sugary snacks.

Zotrim, which is based on three South American plants, was tested by scientists at the University of Liverpool.

They found that women who took the pill with their breakfast had a much lower appetite at lunch time, cutting their calorie intake by 17.6 per cent, reported.

Boring household not good for pregnant women

London, June 02: A new research suggests that “boring and repetitive” household chores raises the odds of giving birth prematurely.

Exercise, however, is good for both mother and unborn child. Dailymail.co.uk reports that the study involved data collected from almost 12,000 new mothers about how much they had exercised during pregnancy including housework.

The findings showed that mentally unstimulating work, including doing jobs around the house day-in day-out, increased the chances of giving birth at least three weeks early by up to 25 percent.
