New York, June 02: Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-American Times Square bombing suspect, is being labelled as a “hybrid terrorist”, someone who acted alone in the US but drew inspiration from outside extremist forces like the Taliban.

There may be other such radicalised Americans who are waiting for a chance to attack the country, CBS News reported.

“In one sense, Shahzad was a lone wolf, with evidence suggesting that he alone bought, assembled and delivered his botched IED,” it said.

UN demands impartial inquiry into Gaza flotilla deaths

New York, June 02: The UN Security Council called today for an impartial inquiry into the Israeli commando raid on a flotilla of aid ships for Gaza, which left nine activists dead. The statement – after a night of talks and wrangles – called for the investigation to be “prompt, impartial, credible and transparent”.

He reiterated that it was not the handiwork of people within the ashram but of outsiders and that it necessitated a thorough investigation. Activities at the ashram were going on as usual, he said.

Havana, June 02: Cuba’s communist government started relocating political prisoners closer to their families after church-government talks aimed at ending politically embarrassing hunger strikes, dissident and family sources said.

The action came after church-government talks launched May 19 aimed at ending hunger strikes in support of the political prisoners, which have become a major political embarrassment for President Raul Castro.

US opens criminal investigation into oil spill

New Orleans, June 02: US officials said Tuesday they launched a criminal probe into the nation’s worst ever oil spill as BP voiced hopes of capping the six-week-old Gulf of Mexico leak soon.

“We will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone who has violated the law,” Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters in New Orleans. “We will not rest until justice is done.”

As shares in the British energy giant plunged Tuesday, losing 13 percent and wiping off 12 billion pounds (17.6 billion dollars) off its market value, Holder said the criminal probe began “some weeks ago.”

The raid provoked ferocious international condemnation of Israel, raised questions at home, and appeared likely to increase pressure to end the blockade that has deepened the poverty of the 1.5 million Palestinians in the strip.

15 people killed in Philippines road accident

Manila, June 02: Fifteen people were killed when a passenger minibus plunged into a 70-metre-deep ravine in the northern Philippines, police said Wednesday.

Fifteen more were also hurt in the accident Tuesday in Besao town in Mountain province, 285 km north of Manila, Senior Superintendent Fortunato Albas said.

Albas, the provincial police chief, said heavy rains made part of the mountain road collapse, causing the mini-bus to fall into the ravine while negotiating a slope.

New Delhi, June 02: Sonu Punjaban, who is facing charges in various cases of prostitution in the Capital, is in the news once again.

This time the police are on the lookout for two of her “ relatives”, who allegedly gangraped a 25- year old woman.

The incident took place at Sonu’s residence in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi on Monday. Sonu, who recently came out of jail, is also alleged to have been present at the house during the rape.

The victim somehow managed to escape and reported the matter at the Mehrauli police station late in the night.

Obama speaks to Turkish PM after Gaza incident

Washington, Jun 02: US President Barack Obama has spoken to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a crisis built after an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, which Turkey branded a “bloody massacre.”

Obama spoke with the Turkish leader yesterday afternoon Washington time, an official said on condition of anonymity.

Further details of the conversation were expected later.

Earlier, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs had previewed the call, saying, “obviously they’re an important friend in all this and a relationship that we value greatly.”

PM lauds Sonia’s guidance to UPA

New Delhi, June 02: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday lauded the guidance provided by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the government as UPA-II completed a year, and said that renewal of mandate last year reflected people’s faith in its policies.

Twin blasts rock Kabul, Karzai unhurt

Kabul, June 02: Two explosions rocked the Afghanistan capital Wednesday as President Hamid Karzai opened a “jirga” or peace assembly.

The National Consultative Peace Jirga was aimed at ending conflicts and ensuring peace in the militancy-hit country, Xinhua reported.

Around 1,600 people including tribal chieftains, parliamentarians, social and political figures as well as government officials gathered under a giant tent in Kabul to discuss the ways and means on how to enhance the government-initiated reconciliation process with the Taliban.

Taiwan’s Foxconn boosts pay after worker suicides

Taipie, June 02: Taiwanese technology giant Foxconn, battling to stem a spate of factory suicides in China, said Wednesday it was raising the pay of its Chinese assembly line workers by 30 percent.

The pay raise took effect immediately, said an official at Foxconn’s parent company Hon Hai Precision, which said last week that it was considering a hike of at least 20 percent from the basic monthly pay of 900 yuan (130 US dollars).

NATO soldier, 14 Taliban fighters killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, June 02: A NATO soldier was killed in a roadside bomb blast in southern Afghanistan, while Afghan and NATO forces killed 14 Taliban fighters in the country’s north, officials said Tuesday.

The alliance military did not disclose the nationality of the deceased, nor did it say where exactly in southern Afghanistan the incident took place. Most of the foreign troops stationed in the region are from the United States, Britain, Canada and the Netherlands.

Twin blasts heard in Kabul as Afghan jirga opens

Kabul, June 02: Two blasts were heard in Kabul on Wednesday as President Hamid Karzai delivered a speech at the opening of a “jirga” at which 1,600 delegates will discuss making peace with the Taliban, an AFP reporter said.

Karzai broke off his speech to say: “Someone is trying with a rocket perhaps.”

“Don’t worry about it, let’s proceed,” he told the delegates, who broke into applause.
