Jahan Bloch: KRANTIVEER is unlike YUVA

Mumbai, June 02: Yet another newcomer is knocking the doors of Bollywood. Jahan Bloch, daughter of film maker Mehul Kumar, would be making her debut with KRANTIVEER – THE REVOLUTION, the sequel to Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia starrer KRANTIVEER. In the film, Jahan plays the daughter of Patekar, hence taking the story forward where she plays a journalist who is set to lead the revolution against terrorism, violence and corruption.

Police stations only in name in some Maoist areas: Chidambaram

Raipur Jun 02: Police stations exist only in name in some districts most affected by left wing extremism, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said today.

“The distribution of force among police stations is badly skewed, there are not enough police stations. Even where there is a police station, the strength of the force is often no more than 20. In some of the districts most affected by left wing extremism, the police station exists only in name,” the minister said in his inaugural speech here at the 40th All India Police Science Congress.

Bips ad creates flutters

Mumbai, June 02: Bips ad for lotto, has heated up the cyber world completely. The actor is topless in this ad. The ad also features Vivek Oberoi. Shot in India, the ad was directed by Ken Nahoum and art direction by illustrator Tommy Kane.

However, Bipasha’s manager confirmed that it is indeed her only who has been featured in this ad.

“Bipasha had done this ad in 1999 when she was with Ford Modelling Agency in New York. It was an international assignment and was meant for the international market. I don’t know why such an old ad has surfaced now,” said Bipasha’s manager.

Tata Motors inaugurates Nano factory at Sanand

Sanand, June 02: Tata Motors today inaugurated the world’s cheapest car, the Nano’s, manufacturing facility here, nearly two years after it was forced to shift the plant out of West Bengal over a land row.

The new plant at Sanand was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, who seven years ago dreamt of making an affordable family car for the common man.

Iran ‘restricting euro transactions’

Tehran, June 02: As the stagnant European economy weighs heavily on the euro forcing it into a downward spiral, the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) unveils a major plan for converting 45 billion of its euro reserves into dollar and gold ingots.

The CBI’s new monetary policy comes against a backdrop of a new phase of economic recession in European states of Greece and Spain which has caused a drop in the value of euro against the dollar in international markets.

There are growing fears that the economic crisis would likely hit other eurozone countries as well.

Afridi sees role for Akhtar in ODI, T20s

Lahore, June 02: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said that he saw a role for maverick fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar in ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals.

Afridi told reporters that Akhtar had assured him he only wanted to focus on his cricket after a long lay-off from international cricket.

“We definitely see a role for Shoaib in ODIs and T20 cricket and we want to give him a chance in these formats of the game,” Afridi said.

Yousuf wanted Test match fees raised

Karachi, June 02: Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has asked the Cricket Board (PCB) to raise the Test match fees or face the possibility of a further slump in the rankings of the game’s five-day version.

Yousuf told the inquiry committee of the PCB, constituted a few months back to probe into the national team’s disastrous tour of Australia, that Pakistan was facing a shortage of quality Test players.

Mumbai, June 02: Suspended IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi accused the BCCI of harassing him through show-cause notices which he termed as a “ridiculous affair”.

Bangalore, Jun 02: A special court here today adjourned the trial in the disproportionate assets case against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to June 14.

When the case came up for hearing before Judge B M Mallikarjunaiah, the counsel for Jaya sought over 10 days time stating that certified copies of necessary documents were still not ready.

However, Special Public Prosecutor B V Acharya argued that all the requisite documents had already been given and “the reason was just a pretext to seek adjournment.”

Indian cops nabbed with hashish in Nepal

Kathmandu, June 02: Two Indian policemen have been caught with hashish in a border district in Nepal, the official media said.

Indra Bhanu Rai and Umesh Yadav, two policemen employed in the Badauni police station in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, were arrested in Nepal’s border district Kapilavastu after they were found to be carrying 700 gm of hashish, the Gorkhapatra reported Wednesday.

Hashish is the purified resinous extract of the hemp plant and used as a hallucinogen.

During a police check at the border bus station Monday, the two men tried to flee but were caught.

Bristol City Council has been accused of discrimination as whites were not allowed from applying for two 18,000 pounds a year jobs, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

The management training posts for graduates are an effort to recruit more minority employees, but this move has been criticised by white graduates looking for work.

Fresh I-T notice to Vodafone

New Delhi Jun 02 : The telecom company claims it has no liability in any event.

The Income Tax (I-T) Department today said it had the jurisdiction to tax the $11.1-billion Vodafone-Hutchison Essar deal of February 2007.

“We have jurisdiction over taxing Vodafone. Jurisdiction order has been issued …we will send the tax demand to them within a few days,” Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman S S N Moorthy told PTI.

Child dies in accidental fire in Kathua

Srinagar, June 02: A boy was killed in an accidental fire by his 10-year-old cousin in Basohli area of Kathua district, police said here today. The incident occurred at village Palai in Basohli area, about 120-kms from here, in Kathua last evening when Sonu was fiddling with a country made gun of his father.

The gun suddenly went off hitting his 6-year-old cousin Abhi Jamwal, who died on the spot, they said. Jamwal had come to the house of his maternal uncle a few days back.
