New Delhi, June 02: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan dotes on his two children – Aryan and Suhana – and says playing a perfect father to them is the best role he has ever got in real life.

“Being a parent is the greatest joy for me and playing the perfect father is the best role ever! Whilst I am the actor-entertainer, it’s definitely my children who offer unconditional love and bring entertainment and joy to my life,” Shah Rukh said in a statement.

Israel deports Gaza-bound activists

Jerusalem, une 02: Israel has deported more than 120 activists who were detained after a raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, while as many as 300 activists from Turkey have been released to be flown home.

Israel’s commando raid on international aid ships on Monday left at least nine activists dead, prompting international criticism and fresh calls to lift its blockade of Gaza. Israel has defended its military action and says the blockade is necessary for its security.

I’m disenchanted with India: Zardari

Washington, June 02: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has said he was disappointed with India but insisted he can never be a hawk vis-a-vis New Delhi.

“I’m a little disenchanted with India. I expected the largest democracy in the world to behave much more maturely. We are facing a threat on the eastern and western borders,” Zardari told Newsweek in an interview.

The president spoke in response to a question on Islamabad’s call to extradite the lone surviving 2008 Mumbai attacker, Pakistan’s Ajmal Amir Kasab.

Girl falls in 200-foot borewell in Punjab

Batala (Punjab), June 02: A one-and-half years old girl fell into a 200-foot-deep, two-foot wide borewell at Dhira village near Batala town in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district Wednesday, police said. Indian Army officials were called to save the child.

Dilrajpreet Kaur accidentally fell into the borewell while playing in the courtyard of her uncle’s house, police said.

“Indian Army officials from Tibri cantonment in Gurdaspur district have reached the village and started the rescue operation,” a police official, who was present on the spot, told IANS.

CPI-M rejects Mamata’s demand for early Bengal polls

New Delhi, June 02: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Wednesday rejected as untenable Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s demand for early assembly elections in West Bengal following its victory in the civic polls.

“Only 16 percent of the states’ electorate have taken part in the civic polls. Based on that alone such a demand smacks of a certain mindest, which is against the overall understanding of the constitutional process,” CPI-M leader Nilotpal Basu told IANS.

18 killed in China landslides

Beijing, June 02: At least 18 people were killed and over 2,000 houses were damaged in rain-triggered landslides in China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region Wednesday, authorities said.

Heavy rains since Monday caused Wednesday’s landslides, which killed eight people in Yangchong village and 10 in Rongxian county, Xinhua reported, citing a statement from the land and resources department.

Over 18 people from Yangchong village and 16 from Rongxian county were still missing.

Typing error makes retired teacher a prostitute

Ajman, June 02: A mistake in typing an ID number, by an immigration official in Ajman, had made a 66-year-old grandmother a prostitute.

The Indian woman from Kerala visited the country in 2005 to see her pregnant daughter, and stayed for 70 days. Six months after she left she was accused of prostitution, blacklisted and a criminal record was opened here.

An official from Ajman Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department mixed up the ID numbers of a prostitute and the Indian woman, and as a result the grandmother become prostitute. The prostitute escaped punishment and the law.

Tata inaugurates Gujarat Nano plant

Sanand, June 02: Nearly two years after it was forced to shift the manufacturing plant of the “world’s cheapest car” Nano from West Bengal’s Singur amid protests against land acquisition, Tata Motors Wednesday inaugurated the new Nano plant in Gujarat’s Sanand.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the plant. Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata was present at the occasion.

The company will start production from the Sanad plant from today, officials said.

Krishna in US, Indo-US strategic talks tomorrow

UAE to nominate itself to UN Human Rights Council

Abu Dhabi, June 02: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided to nominate itself for membership of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) for a four-year term beginning 2012, a top official has said.

Congratulating the elected and re-elected countries to the human rights body, Obaid Salem Al Za’abi, UAE’s permanent representative to the UN European headquarters, said: “I’m pleased to announce that the UAE has decided to nominate itself for membership of the council for the term 2012-2015 out of its belief in the important role of human rights in building and developing societies.”

Kaiser new Congress chief in Bihar

New Delhi, June 02: Effecting top-level changes in its faction-ridden Bihar unit before assembly polls this year, the Congress Wednesday named Mehboob Ali Kaiser as the new state party chief.

Kaiser, secretary of the All India Congress Committee, has been appointed president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Anil Kumar Sharma, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a statement.

Islamabad, June 02: A Pakistani journalist who was captured during a naval attack on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla alleged Wednesday that Israeli soldiers were shooting people in cold blood.

Talat Hussain, one of the 124 people arriving in Jordan following their release by Israeli authorities, claimed that the commandos “shot people in the forehead”.

“I witnessed myself the first Israeli assault on the ship. There was no weapon on the ship,” Hussain told Aaj news channel by phone from Jordan.

Child dies after father forgets him in car

Larnaca, June 02: A five-year-old Cyprus boy was found dead in the family car, forgotten there for nearly eight hours by his doctor father while he carried out emergency surgery, police said on Wednesday.

Police said they found the boy dead at 5:00 pm (1400 GMT) on Tuesday afternoon in the car parked outside a private clinic in the southern coastal town of Larnaca.

According to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) the police found the car locked, the boy was in the back seat and there was an empty water bottle next to him.

Navy chopper crashes into a river in AP, 4 injured

Visakhapatnam, June 02: A Chetak helicopter belonging to the Navy Wednesday crashed into a river near Anakapally town, about 50 kilometres from here, injuring the pilot and three others onboard.

According to initial reports, the pilot and three trainee pilots were injured, DIG Visakhapatnam range Swomya Mishra said.

The mishap occurred when the chopper touched a high tension wire while flying low near Sarada river bridge, the DIG said.

All the injured have been admitted to a local government hospital, he said.

Chicago, June 02: As a team of Indian investigators arrived in the US to question for the first time LeT operative David Headley, authorities here are tight-lipped about when and for how long the access will be granted to the Pakistani- American who has confessed to his role in the Mumbai attacks.

The US Attorney’s office spokesperson here, Randall Samborn, said he does not have any comment on Headley’s interrogation, adding if and when the US government has anything to say on the issue, it will be announced.

Police lathi-charge anti-Posco protestors

Paradip (Orissa), June 2: Police today lathi-charged anti-Posco agitators trying to prevent the socio-economic and forest survey, which resumed after four days at the project site for the Rs 52,000 crore mega steel plant.

Batons were used to disperse the agitators at Mathasahi village in Nuagaon panchayat area after they attempted to stop the survey work, officials said.

Nuagaon Sarpanch Bhaskar Swain claimed that he along with five other persons was injured in the police action.

The police, however, said none was injured in the police action.

Train tragedy: 4 suspected Naxals held

Jhargram, June 02: Four suspected Naxalites were arrested here Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the Jyaneshwari train derailment which claimed 148 lives and left over 200 injured.

Official sources said CRPF personnel belonging to 202 Battalion of Special Action Force (SAF) along with local police picked up eight people on suspicion from Guimera village under Jhargram police station.

Cyclonic storm Phet threatens Gujarat

New Delhi, June 02: Tropical cyclone Phet has intensified quickly into a severe cyclonic storm and may hit Gujarat coast in the next 24 hours, met department said on Wednesday.

“The system would intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm and move slowly in a north northwesterly/northerly direction for next 24 hours and then recurve northeastwards towards Gujarat & adjoining Pakistan coast,” IMD said in its latest bulletin.

Saudi Ministry probes ‘offensive’ MTV film

Riyadh June 02 : The Ministry of Information and Culture was investigating an MTV documentary about young people challenging the Kingdom’s social code, ministry’s spokesman Abdul Rahman Al-Hazzaa was quoted as saying Tuesday.
A legal complaint was filed against the one-hour documentary entitled “Resist the Power! Saudi Arabia” broadcast on MTV in the United States last week, Jeddah court sources said.
Al-Hazzaa said they were looking into the film, noting that a number of complaints had been made.
“We are just beginning to investigate it,” Hazzaa said.
