Aarushi mom on CBI radar

New Delhi, June 04: The CBI probe into the Aarushi- Hemraj murder case is gathering pace. And once again, Aarushi’s parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar are under the scanner.

Sources said it is now suspected that Nupur may have played an equal, if not a bigger role, in the crime than her husband.

This suspicion stems from the fact that evidence on the scene of crime was meticulously destroyed.

The CBI has reasons to believe that the missing mobile of Hemraj was in the Talwars’ Noida house till the morning when Aarushi’s murder came to light.

South Korea urges world to rein in reclusive North

Seoul, June 04: South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who blames North Korea for sinking a navy vessel, will urge the world on Friday to respond firmly to such aggression and to convince the hermit state to give up nuclear weapons.

Lee, speaking at a security conference in Singapore, will also stress the importance of the North returning to stalled six-party talks on ending its atomic ambitions and reaching a successful conclusion, the presidential Blue House said.

The North, for its part, said war could break out at any moment.

Sonam Kapoor is not Keeping Well

Mumbai, June 04: It seems that Sonam Kapoor, young actress and daughter of celebrity actor Anil Kapoor, has come down with a bout of sickness beginning with stomach flu.

Sonam is currently not in India, and that is not a good thing for her to happen abroad it seems. She was really upset about the problem, and wrote down her feelings.

Toddler dies after falling into borewell

Chandigarh, June 04: A one- and- half- year- old girl, who had fallen into a 200- feet borewell in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, died on Thursday, despite the army’s 20- hour operation to save her.

The girl, identified as Dilrajpreet Kaur, was playing in the courtyard of her uncle’s house in Dhira village on Wednesday afternoon when she slipped into the well.

The local police tried to pull her out but had to call the army when their attempts failed.

Pawar takes a dig at Cong

New Delhi, June 04: Union agriculture minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar seems to have become a lover of the minority community. In his bid to woo the minorities, he said most secular parties were taking Muslims for granted as they think the minorities have no alternative.

Though political circles view it as a dig at the Congress, an ally, the latter refused to join issue.

AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said: “ We do not comment on our allies”. Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said he would not comment as he did not know what Pawar had said.

Obama cancels June trip to Australia and Indonesia

Washington, June 04: With the worst oil spill in U.S. history presenting a key test of his presidency, U.S. President Barack Obama postponed a trip scheduled for this month to Australia and Indonesia, the White House said early on Friday.

It was the second time in a little more than two months that Obama had canceled a trip to the two countries. He was previously due to have gone in late March but postponed to stay at home to give a final push to his healthcare overhaul plan in Congress.

Sheila plans 2000 MW power plant for Delhi

New Delhi, June 04: Delhi will soon have a new power plant which will generate more electricity than the city’s four existing power plants currently produce, government officials said.

The plant will replace the existing Badarpur Thermal Power Station in south Delhi. It will use gas to produce electricity instead of coal, reducing the city’s carbon footprint, power department officials added.

The current plant accounts for nearly half of the capital’s power- driven air pollution — it emits 5 mmt carbon dioxide every year, according to unofficial estimates.

Congress leaders meet Jagan

Indigenously developed H1N1 vaccine is ready

New Delhi, June 04: The first Indian vaccine against the dreaded swine flu is now available.

The vaccine has been manufactured by Cadila Healthcare and was launched on Thursday by Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

The vaccine has been developed at the company’s Vaccine Technology Centre, in Ahmedabad. The minister also took the vaccine shot.

An H1N1 flu pandemic was declared on June 11, 2009 by the World Health Organisation. The disease has claimed over 18,000 lives globally and over 1,000 in India.

Afghan jirga to call for peace with Taliban

Kabul, June 04: Hundreds of Afghan tribal elders and notables were set to make a formal call for peace with the Taliban on Friday, the final day of a traditional assembly that they said was a last chance to end a nine-year war.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai called the “peace jirga” to win national support for a peace plan consisting of offering an amnesty, cash and job incentives to Taliban foot soldiers while arranging asylum for top figures in a second country.

Molestation slur on army general

New Delhi, June 04: The Indian Army was in the eye of an ugly storm on Thursday after one of its top officers was accused of molesting the wife of a subordinate.

The woman alleged that the army’s engineer- in- chief, Lieutenant General A. K. Nanda, had “ sexually misbehaved” with her on a recent trip to Israel.

Her husband, Colonel CPS Pasricha, was the technical secretary to Nanda.

Details of the allegation show that Nanda and Pasricha had visited Israel on an official trip in the first week of May and were accompanied by their spouses.

CBI chief calls on Rosaiah

Hyderabad, June 04: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)is learnt to have briefed Chief Minister K Rosahiah about its probe into the Ajmer Shareef and Mecca Masjid bomb blasts.

CBI Director Ashwani Kumar met the Chief Minister for over half an hour today.

The accused in the Ajmer Shareef blast case are being brought to Hyderabad shortly as part of the investigation into the Mecca Masjid blast case.

Rajesh is a prime accused of Aarushi

Ghaziabad, June 04: The CBI will quiz Noida policemen who were involved in the probe into the Aarushi- Hemraj double-murder case that had led to the arrest of the teenager’s dentist father Rajesh Talwar, with an agency official saying that it was wrong to give a clean chit to him.

Talwar, who had emerged as the main suspect in the May 16, 2008 murder of his 15-year-old daughter and servant and was arrested on May 23 by Noida police, was granted bail after nearly 50 days as the CBI said it had not found any evidence against him.

Rosaiah shows solution to nala flooding

Hyderabad, June 04: Chief Minister K Rosaiah has directed reconstruction of a wider culvert at the Patny Compound to prevent flooding of residential colonies in Secunderabad during rains.

Taking up the long-pending issue at a meeting here on Thursday, the chief minister asked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to take up the widening in coordination with the Cantonment Board, R&B, the HMDA, traffic police and other departments concerned.

The GHMC officials assured the chief minister of taking up the work after the monsoons.

Rosaiah may trim his pruning of cabinet

11 trapped in China coal mine flood

Beijing, June 04: Rescuers were striving Friday to save 11 workers trapped in a flooded coal mine in northern China, the latest accident to hit the notoriously dangerous industry, an official and state media said.

Some 400 rescuers were sent to the flooded pit in the city of Jincheng in Shanxi province — China’s coal-production heartland — to try to drain the floodwaters and reach the missing miners, Xinhua news agency reported.

An official with the Shanxi work safety bureau confirmed the men were still trapped, but refused any further comment about the incident.

GHMC meet marred by TDP protest

Hyderabad, June 04: The special meeting of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for constituting ward committees for 150 Divisions was marred by protests from Telugu Desam corporators. Even after the meeting was over, trouble brewed for sometime with angry exchanges between Secunderabad MLA Jayasudha and Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy’s husband Chandra Reddy on the way the selection of ward committee members took place.

The meeting was interrupted constantly by TDP and BJP corporators, forcing the Mayor to suspend one of the TDP corporator for the unruly behavior in the House.

Sensex opens 48 points down in early trade

Mumbai, June 04: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by over 48 points in early trade today as funds and retail investors sold stocks amid mixed Asian trend.

The 30-share index, which rallied by nearly 450 points in the past two sessions, lost 48.99 points, or 0.25 per cent, to trade at 16,974.00 points after rising to 17,051.04 points at the outset.

Stocks of metals, realty, capital goods and auto sectors came under pressure, pulling the Sensex down.

The National Stock Exchange’s Nifty fell 15.95 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 5,094.55 points.

Bangladesh blaze death toll climbs to 108

Dhaka, June 04: Rescuers called off the search for survivors today as the death toll from one of Bangladesh’s worst fires rose to 108 after flames ripped through a packed neighbourhood of Dhaka, officials said.

The blaze raged for three hours, destroying a row of multi-storey apartment buildings and trapping hundreds of residents in Dhaka’s densely populated Kayettuli area, city police chief AKM Shahidul Haq told AFP.

Shimla, June 04: More than eight years after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee laid the foundation stone of Rohtang Tunnel project at Palchang near Manali, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will again lay the foundation stone of the project on June 28.

Union Minister Virbhadra Singh said in a press statement that the project with revised cost of Rs 1495 crore would be completed by 2015.
