Tokyo, June 04: Mr. Kan came into politics from the civil liberties movement and made a name for himself in 1996 when, as health minister, he led a campaign to bring a scandal over HIV-tainted blood products to light.

Naoto Kan was chosen as Japan’s next prime minister by parliament Friday after he won an overwhelming victory in the ruling Democratic Party of Japan’s presidential election. Emperor Akihito is to appoint Kan Japan’s 94th premier later Friday.

Mr. Kan served as finance minister and deputy prime minister in outgoing Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s cabinet.

Mom held for ‘honour killing’ of journo

New Delhi, June 04: Monday saw developments in the alleged “ honour killing” of Delhi- based journalist Nirupama Pathak in the Capital as well as Koderma, her hometown in Jharkhand.While Pathak’s friends met National Commission for Women ( NCW) chairperson Girija Vyas and sought speedy justice in the case, the Koderma police arrested Pathak’s mother Sudha Devi on charges of murder.

Judge raps Mumbai cops for framing duo

Mumbai, June 04 :MONDAY’S verdict was a resounding slap in the face of the Mumbai Police. Delivering the verdict, judge M.L. Tahaliyani suggested the police brought in made-up witnesses and framed two amateurs — Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin. This was done despite evidence to suggest the role of Lashkar-e- Tayyeba operative David Coleman Headley in conducting recces ahead of the attack.

Injured man dies

Hyderabad, June 04 (Siasat News): A man who was seriously injured in a road accident occurred at Chandanagar succumbed to his injuries.

According to the Banjara Hills police, Raguvendra Rao, 30, who was working as an electrician at BHEL, was seriously injured on May 25 when a vehicle hit him badly.

He was under treatment at Apollo Hospital at Jubilee Hills. Police Jubilee Hills has registered a case and started the investigations.

Rupee weakens by 4 paise against dollar in opening trade

Mumbai, June 04: The Indian rupee depreciated by 4 paise to 46.72 a dollar in the opening trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, in tandem with other weak Asian currencies.

Forex dealers said that subdued opening on the stock markets also weighed on the rupee sentiment.

The rupee had closed 30 paise higher, at 46.68/69 a dollar, in the previous session.

Meanwhile, Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex plunged by 48.33 points to 16,974.00 in early trade.

Pawar denies family’s involvement in IPL bid

New Delhi, June 04: Union minister Sharad Pawar dismissed reports of his family’s involvement in the City Corporation’s failed bid for the Pune IPL team, saying the construction company’s Managing Director made the attempt in his individual capacity.

Amid reports alleging Pawar family’s shareholding in the company, which ultimately lost the bid to the Sahara Group, Pawar said, “I have stated earlier also that neither I nor any of my family members were involved in any IPL team or the bidding process and I reiterate that statement.”

1,400 prisoners released in China

Beijing, June 04: Around 1,400 prisoners have been released from jail on medical grounds, before their sentences were over in China’s Jiangxi province, an official said.

Of the 1,400 prisoners released Thursday, 632 are elderly, 160 are handicapped and 604 are severely ill, Ma Chengzu, director of the the judicial department of Jiangxi province was quoted as saying by chinanews.com.cn.

The prisoners were released as part of a sentence mitigation programme started in June 2009 by the department.

NIA team in Chicago to question Headley, US authorities mum

Chicago, June 04: A team of Indian investigators has arrived in Chicago and is preparing to interrogate LeT operative David Coleman Headley in connection with the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) team, putting up at a city hotel, is headed by Loknath Behera and comprises two Superintendents of Police and a special public prosecutor.

However, three days after the team arrived in the US to question Headley, there was no confirmation from US authorities here as to when and what kind of access would be granted to the team.

Katherine Heigl wants to adopt child from Haiti

Los Angeles, June 04: Hollywood actress Katherine Heigl and her husband Josh Kelly want to adopt a child from earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

The “Killers” star, who adopted daughter Naleigh from Korea in September last year, says she is so happy to be a mother and wants to adopt her next child from Haiti, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“We would like to have a second child adopted or biological. We’re not ruling it out. Just look at Haiti. There are so many parentless children. It breaks my heart. I want to help,” said Heigl.

Onset of monsoon, winter may see return of swine flu, say experts

Mumbai, June 04: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is prepared to deal with the recurrence of the second and third waves of the Influenza A H1N1 virus this monsoon. The virus, say experts, can become virulent in colder seasons.

“The chances of these waves are higher during the monsoon and winter,” ICMR director general Dr VM Katoch said.

Even as a mild wave of swine flu begins to grip Maharashtra — which has seen 7,092 cases since the first outbreak in 2009 and 200 in the past month —India launched its first indigenous monovalent vaccine against H1N1.

Ahmadinejad urges action on Israel

Tehran, June 04: Speaking with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by phone, Ahmadinejad has stressed the need for a stronger international response condemning Israeli brutality.

The Iranian president, on Thursday, also condemned the attack on the aid flotilla and said Monday’s assault proved that Israeli crimes did not just target the Palestinians.

He also said that the attack on the Freedom Flotilla was not an isolated case of Israeli attack on activists and the regimes’ history reflected a spate of such atrocities.

Israeli Gaza activist under pressure

Gaza, June 04: The Israeli interior minister has urged revocation of the Israeli citizenship of a Knesset member because of her presence on a Gaza-bound aid convoy.

Haneen Zuabi, a Palestinian member of the Israeli Knesset, was among hundreds of activists aboard a ship, part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.

The Israeli Navy on Monday attacked the Freedom Flotilla which was carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian supplies for the besieged people of Gaza who have been under blockade for three years.

Iran calls for all-out boycott of Israel

Tehran, June 04: Iran’s ambassador to the UN has called for an “all-out boycott” of Israel, saying that a recent attack on ships carrying aid to Gaza showed Tel Aviv’s brutality.

Mohammad Khazaei made the comments at an emergency meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in New York on Thursday, IRNA reported.

The meeting was held at Khazaei’s request to review different aspects of the Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla which left several activists dead.

‘US gave Israel time to decide on probe’

Jerusalem, June 04: Israeli officials said Thursday that the US has given them the leeway to resolve an internal debate about how to investigate the Gaza flotilla incident before imposing outside ideas.

They said that the US understood that Israel was considering additional measures beyond the IDF investigation, and that they would wait for Israel to decide on an approach before exerting any pressure to determine the probe’s contours.

Turkey says Israel losing friend

Ankara, June 04: Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warns Israel it is losing its “best friend in the region,” urging Tel Aviv to “immediately” review its policies.

Speaking on Thursday in the aftermath of a deadly Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla, Erdogan blamed Israel for its “violent policy” that will not lead to positive results.

“Those policies would not benefit anybody, especially Israel. Israel should review its approach immediately, the ” Today’s Zaman newspaper quoted Erdogan as saying on Thursday in Ankara.

US to probe American death on Flotilla

Washington, June 04: The United States says it will launch an investigation into the death of an American citizen, who was killed during an Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla.

The Obama administration “will look into the circumstances of the death of an American citizen,” State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley told reporters.

Furkan Dogan, a US national of Turkish descent, was killed on Monday by Israeli navy forces aboard one of the aid ships in international waters more than 150 km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza.
