The human body has the ability to ward off viruses by activating a naturally occurring protein at the cellular level, setting off a chain reaction that disrupts the levels of cholesterol required in cell membranes to enable viruses to enter cells, a new study has found.

The findings, discovered by researchers in molecular microbiology and immunology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, hold promise for the development of therapies to fight a variety of viral infections.

Police officer killed on MIT campus near Boston

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus police officer was shot and killed Thursday night at the school’s campus outside Boston, which has been edge since Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing.

Police and the FBI responded to reports of gunshots at Building 32, according to MIT, which posted a message on its Twitter account. Officers surrounded and cordoned off the building, CNN reported.

The university, which lies adjacent to the city of Boston, requested people stay away from the building as police consider the situation still active and dangerous.

Moves to issue amount for scholarship and fee-reimbursement

Although there was a delay in issuance of scholarship and fee-reimbursement to minority students for the academic year 2012-13, Minority Finance Corporation is taking moves to issue the amount at the earliest.

Commissioner Minority Welfare and managing Director Minority Finance Corporation M A Waheed told that Finance Department has released the budget of Rs. 80.93 crore, however there are some hurdles in issuing the budget which are tried to be removed.

Baby born in 6 months saved at Yashoda hospital

A baby girl was born in 26 weeks (6 months 2 weeks) at Yashoda hospital, Secunderabad. Her weight was 550 gms at the time of birth. 24 year old Mrs. Gayatri was under the treatment of Dr. V Padmini, Gynecologist who saved the child with her experience and expertise.

Dr. T P Kartik pediatrician and neurologist told that incidents like this in which the lives of premature babies have been saved are quite few. Baby’s health is surprisingly well and she is presently with her mother. She weigh 1 ½ kg now.

Two arrested for raping minor in J&K

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today.

Sajjad Ahmed and Mohd Aslam of Chanderog village were arrested yesterday in connection with the rape of a minor girl at Nai Basti in the district, they said.

A written complaint was lodged at the Ramban Police Station on March 22 following which a case was registered under Section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) and the accused were arrested.

Airport authorities agreed to erect tents for offering Friday prayers

On the representation made by Mr. Syed Mohammed Ahmedullah, Minister for Minorities Welfare. Govt. of AP the management of GMR agreed to erect tents on the occasion of Fridays to facilitate the Muslims to offer prayers in airport premises.

Mr. Ahmedullah had invited the attention of airport authorities in this connection that the Muslims offer Friday prayers in hot sunlight. Mr. Ahmedullah also spoke to Mr. Prasanna, CEO of the airport. He has agreed to erect tents on Fridays. It may be noted that many Muslim passengers come to airport but there is no facility for them to offer prayers.

Syria violence `must end immediately`: UN Security Council

The UN Security Council on Thursday called for an immediate end to the escalating violence in Syria, calling it “completely unacceptable.”

In a statement released after consultations on the humanitarian situation in Syria, the Council members reiterated their call for all parties in Syria to cease all armed violence and underlined “the need for a political process leading to a political transition on the basis of the Geneva Action Group Communique of June 30, 2012.”

FBI website crashes after releasing Boston Marathon bombing suspects’ photos

The website of FBI has reportedly crashed after the agency revealed photos and video of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

During the FBI press conference on Thursday, the agency revealed photos and video, and urged people to go to fbi.gov to look at the photos and video of the two men.

Within seconds the site wouldn’t load and presented people with a “server too busy” alert.

The site, presumably, went down as a result of a surge of traffic, the ABC News reports.

Housing Plan for Slum dwellers

US pressure cooker maker ‘deeply saddened’ by Boston Marathon bombings

The firm that made the pressure cooker, which was used in the Boston Marathon bombs said they are “deeply saddened” by the incident that killed three and injured over 170.

Fagor America said that their cookers “are not intended to be used for any other purpose other than cooking.”

The firm, which is a New Jersey subsidiary of an appliance manufacturer in based in Spain, also said it has been contacted by investigators and is fully cooperating, CBS News reports.

Only 50 lecturers in 22 Govt. colleges

Delay in issuing health cards to Govt. employees – Unions Protest

Various leaders of State employees unions have alleged that Govt. has failed to fulfill the assurances given to employees unions about issuing health cards. They told that the credibility of the Govt. is getting lost.

Mr. K. Ratna Kishore, Principal Secretary, Dept. of Health had convened a meeting of the various NGO’s unions. On this occasion, he announced that Govt. has provided financial assistance to Govt. employees upto Rs. Two lakh.

Mr. Prabhakar must apologize to people of Telangana – Rajaiah

Congress MP Mr. M. Rajaiah demanded apology from P. Prabhakar for writing an anti-Telangana book, humiliating the sentiments of the people of Telangana. PCB to allow ‘disgraced’ Butt, Asif to continue domestic careers after end of bans

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohammad Zaka Ashraf has said that the board will allow disgraced former captain Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif back into domestic cricket after they complete their bans for spot-fixing. The Court of Arbitration for Sports had recently rejected appeals from Butt and Asif, who, along with team-mate Mohammad Aamir, were banned for a minimum of five years by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being found guilty of spot-fixing at the 2010 Lords Test against England, Sport24 reports.

GHMC’s plan to save Hyderabad from fire

A meeting of the standing committee of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation was held under the Chairmanship of Mayor, Mr. Majid Hussain in which plans were formulated for Million Plus cities (Hyderabad) to save them from fire accidents.

The standing committee rejected the proposal of the Dept. of Tourism for selling its land at the rate of Rs. 35,000 per Sq. Yard. It was decided to request the Dept. of Tourism to sell the land at the rate of Rs. 20,000 per square yard.
