Pak, US hold talks in bid to break Afghan peace deadlock

Islamabad, Apr. 22 (ANI): Senior officials from Pakistan and the United States have held talks to break the apparent deadlock in efforts to reach out to the Afghan Taliban for a peaceful end to a decade-long war. A high-level US delegation, led by US acting special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan David Pearce, travelled to Islamabad to meet senior Pakistani civil and military officials, reports The Express Tribune. The meeting came at a time when tension is running high between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Rajya Sabha members seek more stringent anti-rape laws

Rajya Sabha Members Monday sought more stringent laws following the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl here and asked the government to call an all-party meeting for the purpose, even as some parties pushed for the death penalty in such cases.

The debate, which saw participation of several women members, also saw MPs raising questions about direction of modernity, influence of globalization and effect of consumerist culture.

There were also demands to check spread of pornographic material and complaints about obscenity in films and TV.

New Delhi, April 22 (ANI): Addressing Members of Parliament on Monday, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said an inquiry has been ordered into the lapses on part of police in connection with the rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi”s Gandhinagar area,but added that such incidents don”t just happen in the national capital.

He said such incidents happen across the country.

Making a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha, Shinde updated members about the action taken by the government in relation to the incident.

US man saves son from alligator’s jaws

New York, Apr. 22 (ANI): A father and son’s canoe trip at the Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge in Boynton Beach, Florida, took a terrifying turn on Friday when the 6-year-old kid fell into the water and his hand was bit into by a eight-foot gator.

According to Local 10, Joey Welch’s father Joseph said that he heard blood-curdling screams and saw an alligator had his son’s right arm in his jaw and he just freaked.

Joey said that the alligator just swam to him and clamped his arm.

Nine-year old gangraped in Assam

Cachar (Assam), April 22 (ANI): A nine-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by two unidentified persons in Assam”s Cachar on Monday police said. The victim who lives in Karimganj had gone to pay a visit to her grandfather in Pechachora village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kallain police station of Katigora sub-division when two unidentified persons with covered faces abducted her. The girl was then taken to a house on the Kallain Tea estate and gangraped before being abandoned.

`Oblivion` tops weekend box office with $38.2m earning

New York, Apr. 22 (ANI): Tom Cruise’s sci-fi thriller ‘Oblivion’ has made a 38.2-million-dollar debut in the US and in the process topped the box office, according to the studio estimates.

That domestic haul comes on top of 33.7 million dollars that the movie made in overseas markets, where the film began rolling out a week earlier.

The movie has raised its overseas total to 112 million dollars and its worldwide receipts to 150.2 million dollars, the New York Post reported.

Delhi child rape case: Second suspect arrested, confesses to crime

A teenaged “illiterate” boy was arrested from Bihar in the wee hours on Monday for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl in Delhi which he described as a “big mistake”, two days after his friend was apprehended in the case.

Pradeep Kumar (19) was nabbed from his maternal uncle’s house in Barahiya village in Bihar’s Lakhisarai by a joint police team from Delhi and Bihar and sent to transit remand for 15 days by a court there, police said.

Indian Army to DNA profile its soldiers

Indian Army soldiers will have their DNA profile stored in a data bank under a project launched by the Armed Forces Medical Services that will facilitate identification of bodies during any operation, attack or mishap.

Defence Minister A K Antony in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today said a pilot project is in progress at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune to conduct DNA profile of soldiers and develop necessary protocol for identifying them from their body tissues. The strength of the Indian Army is around 1.1 million.

Two-day event to mark Ghalib’s death anniversary

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) A two-day event will be organised on the 144th death anniversary of Mirza Ghalib to showcase his rich legacy, an organisation dedicated to the legendary Urdu poet announced Saturday.

“Yadgar-e-Ghalib” will be held here April 26-27, the Ghalib Memorial Movement (GMM) said.

The event will feature the release and screening of a film on Ghalib produced by Kathak dancer Uma Sharma. In addition, a Kathak performance, recital of couplets of the poet by author Pawan K. Verma, and a mushaira will create the atmosphere of a bygone era.
