It was not long after a big scam was exposed in Minority Finance Corporation that another scam came to the fore in the same department. A scam was unearthed in which it was found that the amount sanctioned by Central government for minority students towards pre-metric scholarships was deposited in benami account.

Blast in Agra, two killed

An explosion hit Tajganj area in Agra on Thursday, reports said.

Two people have been reported dead while one person has been critically injured.

The explosion took place around 1.5 kms from the Taj Mahal.

Lok Sabha adjourned after condoling death of TMC member

Lok Sabha was adjourned today without transacting any business as a mark of respect for Trinamool Congress member Ambika Banerjee who died early this morning.

Banerjee, who was an MP from Howrah, was 84.

As soon as the House met for the day, Speaker Meira Kumar condoled his death. Banerjee was a member of the West Bengal Assembly five times and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009. He was a member of the Standing Committee on Urban Development and Committee on Public Undertakings.

Hyderabad has become a hub of contract marriages for quite some time. A fresh incident of contract marriage came to the fore when the victim escaped from the house and lodged complaint with the police.

The girl told the police that Osama Ibrahim who arrived from Sudan approached a woman and asked her to provide a girl for a month. He gave her Rs. 1 lakh for this. The woman agent brought 4 young girls to the hotel room where Osama Ibrahim was staying. The sudani chose one of the girls and Qazi performed the Nikah.

‘Knock-off jihadis’ can’t break American spirit: Joe Biden

US Vice President Joe Biden has described the two Boston Marathon bombers as “twisted, perverted, cowardly knock-off jihadis” who failed to instil fear in the American people.

“It infuriates them that we refuse to bend, refuse to change, refuse to yield to fear,” Biden said at a memorial service in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Wednesday honouring slain Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier.

Three kids suffocate to death inside parked car

In a tragic incident, three children, including two siblings, died of suffocation after they got locked inside a car parked at a godown near their house while playing, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Kalher village in Thane district.

The deceased were identified as Dileep Amar Maji (7), Ruby Amar Maji (5) and Raj Vinodsingh Soni (6), they said.

Maoists kill two in Odisha

Unleashing fresh violence, Maoists killed two persons suspecting them to be police informers and torched a mobile phone tower in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, police said on Thursday.

Armed ultras had abducted three persons from Kiang area recently and killed two of them while freeing another, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh said.

The bodies of Gopi Pujari, a shop-keeper, and Hatiram Pujari were found on a forest road this morning with their throats slit and bearing gun-shot marks, he said, adding another person Padmanav Pujari was set free by the rebels.

SP leader shot dead in Greater Noida

Samajwadi Party national executive member Chaman Bhati was shot dead by assailants in Dabra village here, triggering protests by villagers who demanded arrest of the killers.

The assailants scaled the boundary wall of the house of 35-year-old Bhati, yesterday and shot him dead. The attack came on a day when the two gunners provided for his security were on leave, police said on Thursday.

Bhati, who was earlier in the property business, was provided with gunners due to a threat to his life.

Tension erupted in Golconda fort on Wednesday when some miscreants allegedly started expanding a temple. However police’s timely intervention and vigilance brought situation under control. The police stalled temple extension.

It is said that in the pretext of performing puja in Hanuman temple located inside Fateh Darwaza miscreants started constructing the platform by accumulating building material. On receipt of information Golconda police reached Fateh Darwaza and stalled the work.

Need to separate administrators from investigators: Altamas Kabir

Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir on Wednesday said separation of administrators from investigators in the police was one of the necessary steps for speedy trials and faster disposal of criminal cases to reduce the huge pendency in different courts in the country. “There should be a separate wing for investigation only, separate from administrators in police forces. This will facilitate speedy trials and faster disposal of cases,” Justice Kabir said.

Bikers fire at traffic constable when asked to stop

A traffic constable escaped unhurt after he was fired upon when he tried to stop three people who were riding a motorcycle without wearing helmets on Wednesday evening, police said.

“The incident happened at Preet Vihar in east Delhi. Traffic constable Monu was manning a traffic signal when he saw the motorcyclists, with no helmets and riding three to a motorcycle. He tried to stop them, but they sped away,” a police officer told IANS.

Custodial torture: Trial against Sanjiv Bhatt stayed

The Gujarat High Court Wednesday temporarily stayed the trial against suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in a 16-year-old case of custodial torture in Porbandar.

Justice S R Brahmabhatt ordered stay till further orders and fixed the hearing in the first week of May.

Bhatt, who was posted as SP in Porbandar in 1997, and constable Vajubhai Chau, are facing a trial for alleged custodial torture of a history-sheeter called Naran Sudha Jadav.

Fire in 4-story building in Hyderabad, no casualties

Fire broke out at the godown of a publishing firm in Boggulakunta area on Wednesday. Nobody was injured, police said.

At least 15 fire engines were sent to the spot to put out the fire in the four-story building.

Fire on the third and the fourth floor was still raging, police said.

Inter 2nd year results likely tomorrow

Intermediate 2nd year results are likely to be announced tomorrow on April 26, while SSC results are likely to be announced in the 3rd week of May. It must e noted that students and parents are anxiously waiting for the results following exams. Inter 1st year results were announced last Sunday.

Meanwhile education minister Parthasarthi told that paper evaluation work is almost complete and inter 2nd year results are likely to be released on April 26.

Russia to launch new Angara carrier rocket in 2014

The Russian military expects the first launch of a new Angara carrier rocket to take place in 2014 after the construction of a new launch complex at the Plesetsk space centre is completed.

The Angara rockets, designed to provide lifting capabilities of between 2,000 and 40,500 kg into low earth orbit, have been in development since 1995.

“We are hoping for 2014. But it all depends on the industry – how fast they can build the rocket,” Deputy Defence Minister Col. Gen. Oleg Ostapenko said.

The maiden launch of the light-class Angara was previously expected in 2013.

Syrian rebels seeking release of abducted bishops

The rebel Free Syrian Army is working to release two Orthodox bishops kidnapped near the northern city of Aleppo. The whereabouts of the two bishops remained unclear despite a report saying they had been freed.

The rebel group has denied its involvement in the abductions.

The whereabouts of Yohanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji remained unclear Wednesday despite a report on the Zenit.org interfaith website that they had been freed after being abducted Monday.

Ibrahim is the head of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Aleppo, while Yaziji leads the Greek Orthodox Church.

Two militants killed in Russia’s Dagestan

Police in Dagestan have killed two suspected militants, including a former student of a university in Cairo, the National Anti-terrorism Committee (NAC) said.

“Two militants were killed in a special operation in the village of Sogratl,” an NAC spokesman said.

Both suspects were identified as local residents. One of them had allegedly studied in the Egyptian capital.

Police surrounded the suspects at a house in Sogratl village. During negotiations with authorities, the men released two women and a child being held hostage in the building.

Man held in Italy for attacking father with axe

A labourer was arrested in Italy’s southern province of Taranto after he wounded his elderly father with an axe.

Aided by his other son, the father managed to wrest the axe from 43-year-old Cosimo Vozza while a neighbour called police.

The attack took place in Sava town.

The old man sustained cuts to his wrists in the attack, during which his wife was also assaulted.

The labourer, who has a criminal record, faces charges of assault and domestic violence.
