US study: Polar bears could feel global warming by 2025

A US government report indicates about a third of the world’s polar bears could be in imminent danger from greenhouse gas emissions as soon as 2025.

The US Geological Survey says updated scientific models don’t bode well for polar bear populations across the world, especially in Alaska, the only US state with the white bears.

The report released this week is part of the government’s recovery plan for the polar bear.

Man beaten up for objecting to eve-teasing of daughter

A man was beaten up allegedly by four youths when he objected to their eve-teasing of his daughter in Narayan village under Shahpur police station here, police said today.

The girl’s father complained to police that four youths were yesterday teasing his daughter and when he objected, they beat him up, police said.

The accused – Ashu, Sunny, Rupesh and Amresh, all aged between 20 to 22 years – have been arrested and a case has been registered against them, police said.

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Return From Trip Abroad

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice president Rahul and Priyanka are back to the national capital after their “short international visit”.

While Rahul Gandhi arrived today, Sonia and Priyanka, who had left before Rahul, returned on Tuesday.

On June 20, when Rahul had left for visit abroad, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said, “Sonia Gandhi is currently travelling on a short international visit for personal reasons”.

The party has declined to divulge the reasons for their foreign visit.

US official: No shortcuts in Syria rebel vetting

The top US military officer says no shortcuts will be made in screening Syrian rebel volunteers for a US training program, which is off to an extremely slow start.

Over 6,000 Syrians have volunteered to battle Islamic State militants, but fewer than 100 passed muster.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Pentagon news conference today that while the US needs to develop a credible, moderate fighting partner on the ground in Syria, the vetting must be done carefully to weed out extremists.

US customs officials recover idol looted from Indian temple

US customs officials have recovered a bronze religious statue from the 11th or 12th century that they say was looted from a temple in India.

The New York office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said today that an anonymous collector voluntarily surrendered the idol.

It says the 2 1/2-foot idol was looted from a temple in Tamil Nadu at the southern tip of India. It will be returned to India.

Customs agents say the collector bought the object in 2006 and was given false provenance papers.

Perception of Indian Ocean as India’s Backyard Troublesome, Says China

China recognises India’s special role in stabilising the strategic Indian Ocean region but the perception that it is India’s “backyard” may result in clashes, Chinese military officials and experts have cautioned.

“The word backyard is not very appropriate to use for an open sea and international areas of sea,” Senior Captain Zhao Yi, Associate Professor of the Institute of Strategy in China’s National Defence University, said during a rare candid interaction with the resident Indian journalists in Beijing and a visiting Indian media delegation.

N Korea opens new showcase airport terminal

North Korea has opened its new airport terminal in the capital, hailing it as a showcase of leader Kim Jong-Un’s “unremitting efforts” to put the country’s air transport on a world level.

Terminal 2 of Pyongyang International Airport, which is reserved for international civilian flights, opened for service yesterday, state media said.

“The terminal was built in a modern way from the gatepost to the airport to departure lounge, entry formalities hall, service halls, etc”, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.
