2G scam:’I was victimized for breaking the monopolies,’ says ex-telecom minister Raja

Former Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Andimuthu Raja has claimed in an interview to be published later this month that he was framed, victimized and jailed for wanting to break existing monopolies in the telecom sector.

In an exclusive free-wheeling and candid interview given to the India Legal magazine at his Gulmohar Park residence, Raja, who had to spend 15 months in Tihar Jail for his role in the alleged 2G telecom scam, and is now out on bail, said, “One day, 2G will be my strength…. I was victimized for breaking the monopolies.”

Details of teachers teaching in Coaching Centers sought

Govt. of Telangana has issued instructions to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan officials to collect information about the Govt. teachers working in Coaching centers and tuition institutes since private tuitions have been banned by the Govt.

Govt. has a feeling that private coaching centers are causing unnecessary competitions.

Digvijay Singh to visit Hyderabad today

General Secretary of All India Congress Committee and Incharge of Telangana Congress Affairs Mr. Digvijay Singh, is visiting Hyderabad this evening. He will meet Congress leaders of Telangana in Gandhi Bhavan tomorrow. It may be noted that Mr. Singh is visiting Hyderabad after the change of Congress President in Telangana State. Mr. Mohammed Ali Shabbeer has been nominated opposition leader in Telangana Legislative Council. Mr. Singh is visiting Hyderabad to participate in a private function. He will meet Congressmen in the morning tomorrow at Gandhi Bhavan from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

18-year-old girl raped by village head in Poonch

An 18-year old girl was allegedly raped by a Sarpanch in border district of Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The girl, a class 12 student, had gone out in the night, when the Sarpanch of her village, identified as Tariq Manzoor (33), kidnapped and raped her in a nearby field last evening,” a police officer said.

He said the accused later threatened the girl of dire consequences if she told about the incident to her parents.

“The girl narrated the incident to her parents and they filed a police complaint at Police Station Mandi,” he said.

Protection of Wakf properties – meeting held

Director of Minorities Welfare Department held a meeting with the officials of Center for Good Governance, National Remote Sensing Agency for preparation of GIS maps in order to protect wakf properties. Various issues relating to preparation of maps were discussed. Mr. Akbar requested the officials of NRS agency to start the work of preparation of maps of Wakf properties as early as possible.

Obama decides to resume military aid to Egypt

US President Barack Obama told his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Tuesday that he will allow the delivery of F-16 aircraft as well as request annual military aid to Egypt, a media report said on Wednesday.

In their telephonic conversation, Obama informed al-Sisi that “he will lift executive holds that have been in place since October 2013 on the delivery of F-16 aircraft, Harpoon missiles and M1A1 tank kits,” reported Xinhua.

Writ against shifting of Secretariat dismissed in HC

High Court of Hyderabad dismissed the writ petition filed against shifting of Secretariat since no supporting documents were produced as evidence. This writ petition was filed only on the basis of information published in newspapers. High Court expressed its anger on the petitioner and imposed fine for wasting High Court’s time. The petition was dismissed with cost.

Hajj volunteers applications invited

Central Hajj Committee of India, Mumbai has invited applications from Govt. employees for appointment as Hajj Volunteers for the Hajj season 2015. Prof. S.A. Shukoor, Special Officer of Telangana State Hajj Committee informed that Govt. employees, employees of Public Sector, Policemen, Home Guards and other Govt. undertakings are eligible to apply. A candidate should be between 25 and 50 years of age as on 1st July 2015 and he should have already performed Hajj earlier. He should have his passport effective till 31st March 2016.

Autos to 1000 families in Hyderabad

Special Secretary of Minorities Department, Mr. Syed Omer Jaleel, IAS, informed that Govt. of Telangana has decided to give 1000 Autorickshaws to unemployed Auto Drivers belonging to Minority Communities. The cost of an Auto is nearly 1.4 lakh. Govt. will provide 50% subsidy and the rest will be arranged as loan from banks. Govt. allocated Rs. 82.4 crore for this scheme in 2014-15 which has been deposited in the account of Minorities Finance Corporation.

Mr. Omer Jaleel has also written a letter to transport commissioner seeking permission to issue 1000 Autorikshaws.

TPCC wants Shabbir Ali as Leader of Oppn in Council

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee has addressed a letter to the Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Assembly to appoint MLC Mohammed Ali Shabbir as Leader of the Opposition in the Council as the present incumbent D Srinivas’s tenure ended on March 29.
On Tuesday, TPCC president N Uttamkumar Reddy addressed letter in this regard and asked the Council Chairman to appoint Shabbir Ali as the new Leader of the Opposition. (NSS)

Masum Akhtar, Madrasa Chief in Kolkata attacked for ‘trying to imitate Rushdie’

Head Master of Madrasa, Masum Akhtar was attacked by some Muslim Fundamentalists on 26th March suspecting him to be following the line of Salman Rushdie.

It is alleged that he had written an article on Karbala in Dainik Statesman last year, after that he was receiving threatening calls alleging him that he is trying to fall in line with Salman Rushdie and Tasleema Nasreen.

A Hindu in Hashimpura saved Muslims

Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) pulled out many Muslims in Hashimpura (Meerut) on 22nd May 1987, took them to the bank of Hindon River Canal and shot them dead. The women and children of those Muslims were crying pleading them to set their men free. The Police Constables searched all the houses except one Hindu house of Tilak Ram where 12 Muslims were given shelter by him. Tilak Ram is in his sixties now. He thanked god that police did not searched his house and he was able to save Muslim families. They left Ram’s house when the curfew was relaxed.

2002 riots: Nanavati panel report not tabled before assembly

The Gujarat Assembly’s budget session ended here today but findings of the ‘2002 riot probe panel’ were not tabled though it was submitted four months ago.

The 2002 riots, in which more than 1,000 people were killed, was probed for around 14 years by a retired Supreme court judge G T Nanavati and accordingly the final report was submitted to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel in November 2014.

Generally, such inquiry panel reports are presented in the assembly session once they are submitted to the government.

Iran says Saudi ‘attack’ on Yemen endangers region

Iran warned today that the Saudi “attack” on Yemen endangered the whole region, calling for an immediate halt to the military operation against Shiite rebels.

“The fire of war in the region from any side… will drag the whole region to play with fire. This is not in the
interest of the nations in the region,” Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said.

We strongly object to the military solution in Yemen. We believe that the Saudi military attack against Yemen is a
strategic mistake,” Abdollahian told reporters on the sidelines of a Syria donors conference in Kuwait.

US, Cuba look to cooperate on human rights

The US and Cuba met here on Tuesday to discuss the issue of human rights, with both sides voicing readiness to cover “a wide range of topics” in “substantive” talks that are to follow.

The US state department described the atmosphere of the meeting as “professional”, saying that the US and Cuban delegations discussed the “methodology, topics and structure” of a future human rights dialogue, according to a Xinhua report.

Iran nuclear talks extended until April 1

Negotiations for a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers have missed the March 31 deadline for a framework agreement and have been extended until Wednesday, according to media reports.

In spite of a full day of talks on Tuesday, the negotiators — the P5+1 group of countries (the US, Britain, China, Russia, France, plus Germany) and Iran — were still working to resolve several issues, a US official said, according to a New York Times report on Tuesday.

US commits to ambitious emissions cut by 2025

The US government formally committed itself on Tuesday to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 percent from 2005 levels by 2025, according to media reports.

This goal set by US President Barack Obama during his visit to China last November is included in a document that Washington sent to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on Tuesday, White House senior adviser Brian Deese said.

The goal will be put on the table at the UN climate conference in Paris later this year.

Kerala HC approves state government’s new liquor policy

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday approved the state government’s decision to allow only five-star hotels to operate bars in the state.

The court reportedly dismissed appeals filed by owners of two, three, and unclassified bars and cancelled a single bench judgment permitting opening of four-star bars.

It also stated that sale or consumption of liquor does not impinge on fundamental right of citizens and that the state government has all the right to frame its liquor policy.

Rajnath’s Coochbehar visit ‘official or political’, asks Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday raised questions over Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Cooch Behar along with BJP MPs, asking if it was an official visit or a political visit.

“Today Union Home Minister has visited Chhit-Mahal areas in Coochbehar, along with BJP MPs. Is it official visit or political visit,” Mamata said on Twitter.

“It is customary to have prior discussion in such cases with State Govt. In a federal str, we must respect each other’s jurisdiction,” she added.
