BJP’s Vijay Shastri says Hindu temple vandalisation in America ‘a cause for worry’

BJP leader Vijay Sonkar Shastri on Sunday condemned the vandalisation of another Hindu temple in Washington and added that such incidents there were a cause for worry.

“It is a condemnable act. America is the kind of nation where every religion has the same rights and if such things happen there then it is a cause for worry,” Shahstri told ANI here.

As per reports, several windows were broken and the word “fear” painted on the wall of the Kent Hindu Temple in Washington on Thursday.

This is the second such act of vandalisation in Washington in the past month.

Mufti Sayeed is Jammu and Kashmir’s chief minister

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was sworn in as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Sunday in a ceremony here attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP national president Amit Shah and senior leaders L. K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi as well as Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar were among those present at the occasion.

Mufti will head the PDP-BJP coalition government in the state and will be the chief minister for full six-year term.

A new study has revealed that cola raises cancer risk due to its caramel coloring.

Research has found that 4-methylimidazole (4-Mel), the chemical that gives cola its appealing caramel color is a potential carcinogen. There aren’t any federal regulations that restrict use of 4-Mel, but according to the report, more than half of Americans between age 6 to 64 drink enough soda on a regular basis to elevate their cancer risk.

Muslim Brotherhood chief handed 4th life term by Egyptian court

An Egyptian court has reportedly sentenced the head of the banned outfit Muslim Brotherhood to life in prison on charges of killing protesters who stormed the group’s Cairo headquarters in 2013.

Mohamed Badie was already facing three other life sentences in other cases, reported the BBC.

While three of his co-defendants were handed down death penalty in the same trial, 14 others, including Badie’s deputies Khairat al-Shater and Saad al-Katatni, were given life terms.

Egyptian court labels Hamas as terrorist group

An Egyptian court has reportedly declared Palestinian group Hamas as a terrorist organisation after accusing it of supporting an insurgency in northern Sinai.

Judge Mohamed el-Sayed said in his verdict that the group was undoubtedly involved in acts of sabotage, assassinations and the killing of innocent civilians and members of the armed forces and police in Egypt, reported the BBC.

The court ruling will effectively ban Hamas inside Egypt. It comes a month after another court listed the armed wing of Hamas as a terrorist group.

Amit Shah, LK Advani reach Jammu to attend Mufti’s oath ceremony

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah and senior leader Lal Krishna Advani have reached Jammu to attend the oath taking ceremony of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed here on Sunday.

Mufti, who will be heading a PDP-BJP coalition government in the state, will take oath at the General Zorawar Auditorium of Jammu University.

Youtube for Android now allows users to trim videos before posting

The Youtube app on Android devices has been updated with a new feature that now allows users to trim videos before uploading it to the web.

According to the Verge, the update is rolling out currently but it might not be live for all users as yet.

The new feature lets users set the beginning and end points of the video with control points on the timelines when they start uploading.

The app requires users to shoot the video in the “portrait” format.

Heart harvested in Bengaluru, transplanted in Hyderabad

In a swift operation, a heart harvested from an accident-victim was air-lifted today from Bengaluru in one hour and 30 minutes and transplanted successfully in a 46-year-old woman at Yashoda hospital here.

A 15-member team headed by Dr A G K Gokhale peformed the tranplantation surgery on Padma, a home-maker from Kothagudem in Khammam district of Telangana.

“It took just about one hour 30 minutes for transportation of the live heart from Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru,” a release from Yashoda Hospital in Secundarabad here said.

3 charred to death as man sets building on fire in Palam

A 52-year-old man, who wanted to take revenge on his estranged wife, today set the building on fire in which she lived killing the woman’s mother along with a father-son duo in Palam area here.

A total of 23 persons were found stuck in the building many of whom were tenants. Some of them jumped to balconies of neighbouring buildings. Eight persons who sustained burn injuries were taken to two hospitals, Bhagat Chandra and DDU.

The accused Anil Kumar has been arrested, police said.

Faridabad residents oppose mobile tower installation

A group of Faridabad residents today submitted a memorandum to Deputy Mayor Mukesh Sharma, requesting him to restrict installation of mobile telephone towers considering its harmful effects.

The memorandum contained objection on the installation of a tower in Jawahar Colony.

Kuldip Singh, along with other residents, submitted the memorandum accusing a resident of allowing installation of a tower without required permission.

The Deputy Mayor asked the officials concerned to ensure that the guidelines decided by the honourable Supreme Court in this matter is followed.

Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma today said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s announcement of extending visa-on-arrival facility to 150 countries from the existing 43 would help promote tourism.

“The announcement by the Finance Minister to extend Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) facility to 150 countries in stages from the current 43 is a big step to promote tourism,” Sharma said in an official release today.

AP govt pools over 30,000 acres for capital till late evening

The Andhra Pradesh government has pooled more than 30,000 acres of land till late this evening for the construction of state’s capital in Vijayawada region.

“Farmers have given maximum land for land pooling. Around 27,000 acres of land, even 28,000 acres of land, they have given. This is the first of its kind in India. Around 95 per cent of farmers came forward to give land under land pooling. This is a very good gesture from farmers. We are working in that direction,” Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu told reporters here.

Tata Steel today said Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s proposal to reduce corporate tax to 25 per cent in the next few years is a welcome step as the budget seeks to provide an environment that attracts investment in industry and propels economic growth.

The proposal to do away with various types of foreign investment caps and replace them with a composite cap is also welcome, Tata Steel said in a press statement.

A quick implementation of market and policy reforms proposed in the budget will help in achieving a GDP growth of 8.5-9 per cent Y-O-Y, it said.

BSF sets free Pak national who crossed border inadvertently

Border Security Force (BSF) today repatriated a Pakistan national, who had crossed over to the Indian Territory inadvertently, without registering a criminal case against him.

According to BSF, Pakistani national Rizwan (25), a resident of District Nankana Sahib, was apprehended by BSF at Border Out Post Roranwala on Indian side.

During questioning, Rizwan revealed that he had left his house due to some family disputes and inadvertently crossed the International Boundary.

Nothing objectionable except Pakistani currency Rs 50 was recovered from his possession, said an official.

S N Sahai appointed interim chief Secy of Delhi

Senior IAS officer S N Sahai was tonight appointed as “interim” chief secretary of the Delhi government till a regular appointment is made.

Sahai, a 1986-batch Union Territory cadre officer, took charge from D M Spolia, who retired today, official sources said.

A regular appointment for the top bureaucratic post of the Delhi government will be made soon, they said.
