Chandrababu Naidu to Meet Modi Over ‘Injustice’ to Andhra in Union Budget

Unhappy over the “raw deal” meted out to Andhra Pradesh in the union budget, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Saturday decided to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek justice for his state reeling under the impact of bifurcation.

Naidu, who is also president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a partner in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, told reporters here that the budget dashed hopes of people who had reposed faith in the alliance.

Meghalaya MLA Clifford R Marak dies

Meghalaya’s sitting legislator from Chokpot constituency and founder of Garo National Congress (GNC) party Clifford R Marak passed away today at a hospital in Guwahati, family sources said.

The 68-year-old MLA was battling with liver and kidney diseases for the last several months and left behind wife Kalpana D Sangma, three daughters and two sons.

Marak had undergone treatment at the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai a few months ago.

Mugabe celebrates 91st birthday with million dollar bash

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe today celebrated his 91st birthday with a lavish million dollar bash that was slammed by the opposition as “obscene” in a country wracked by poverty.

Maken to be Delhi Congress chief

Congress general secretary Ajay Maken will be the chief of the party unit in Delhi where Congress suffered a wipe-out in assembly polls in the national capital.

The decision is expected to be announced in a day or two, sources said, indicating that some other changes could also be announced which includes replacing Punjab Congress chief Pratap Singh Bajwa.

The name of former minister Lal Singh is doing the rounds as Bajwa’s replacement, sources said.

Hazare’s platform is now more political: V K Singh

Veteran social activist Anna Hazare’s platform is more political and not just social anymore, MoS External Affairs V K Singh said today.

Speaking over the issue of Land Acquisition Ordinance, Singh said though he respects Hazare but over time the activist’s platform of issues to be discussed has turned more political and is not social anymore.

Singh who was speaking at a Holi function here, said Hazare now shares the stage with leaders from Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, thus it cannot be called merely a social platform.

2 cops booked for seeking bribe

An FIR has been registered against two policemen for allegedly threatening and taking bribe from a person after the victim sent the recording of the incident to Delhi Police’s anti-corruption WhatsApp helpline.

The accused policemen have not been arrested as the recording has been sent for forensic test and further investigation is underway.

The complainant has forwarded a video/audio recording on the whatsApp helpline of vigilance, recorded by him on February 17, in which he has recorded his conversation with Head Constable Ram Kamal of Ambedkar Nagar police station.

RSS eyes on Kashmir, PDP-BJP a historic opportunity

All central government ministries have been asked to upload notified recruitment rules on their websites to ensure greater transparency.

The move comes after it was noticed that ministries or departments are not uploading these rules for various posts on their official websites.

Swine flu: 36 more succumb to virus, death toll 1,041

The swine flu epidemic has claimed the lives of 36 more people, taking the total death toll in the country to 1,041.

The number of people affected by the virus also stands at 19,000 now.

Rajasthan and Gujarat have been the worst-hit states so far with 234 and 231 deaths, respectively.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, unusual weather conditions prevailing across the country have aggravated the situation and with the rainy days expected ahead, there is a possibility of steep rise in the numbers.

Delhi, NCR hit by rains and strong winds

National capital New Delhi and parts of the extended National Capital region ( NCR) were hit by rains and strong winds on Sunday morning,bringing temperatures down by a few notches.
The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) had earlier warned of the possibility of rains and cloudy weather over the weekend.

The maximum temperature recorded on Saturday was pegged at 29.2 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season’s average. While the minimum temperature was at 12.6 degrees Celsius. (ANI)

Congress terms posters demanding Rahul’s resignation ‘a plot against the party’

Condemning the poster demanding the resignation of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, party leader and former Kanpur MP Sriprakash Jaiswal on Sunday said the act was a conspiracy against the party.

“I condemn this act; it’s a plot against us. Rahulji is our leader, I refuse to believe that the man behind this act is a member of the party,” said Jaiswal.

Another party leader Har Prakash Agnihotri confirmed that the Congress worker responsible for the act had been expelled.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to be sworn in as J-K CM today amidst tight security

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be sworn as the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir here on Sunday amidst very tight security.

He will be heading a PDP-BJPcoalition government.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the General Zorawar Auditorium of Jammu University from around 11 a.m. on Sunday and will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and leaders of both the PDP and BJP, besides other invited dignitaries. Foreign Secretary Jaishankar to begin SAARC Yatra with Bhutan visit

Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar will commence his four-nation SAARC Yatra from Sunday, with Bhutan being the first port of call.

The visits to Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan between March 1 and March 4 is being seen as the Indian Government’s desire to give a fillip to its neighbourhood outreach policy.

After visiting Bhutan today, Jaishankar will travel to Bangladesh March 2, Pakistan March 3 and Afghanistan on March 4.

He will undertake visits to Sri Lanka, Maldives and Nepal later.

England rode on Joe Root’s 121 to score 309/6 against Sri Lanka in a World Cup Pool A game at the Westpac Stadium here on Sunday.

During his 108-ball stay, right-hander Root scored his fourth century in One-day International (ODI) cricket to power his country to a position of strength. Several batsmen chipped in with useful contributions for England.

Experienced opener Ian Bell made 49 in 54 balls, while Eoin Morgan (27) and James Taylor (25) got two very good partnerships with the 24-year-old Root. Jos Buttler provided late spark with an unbeaten 39 of 19 balls.

Teacher held for raping 5-year-old girl

The Amboli police arrested a 40-year-old Urdu teacher on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl thrice in the last few days.

The police booked the accused, Abu Chaudhary, for rape and under other relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. They produced him in court and he was remanded in police custody till March 4.

The victim used to take Urdu lessons from Chaudhary in Jogeshwari. The accused took the child to his house and sexually assaulted her.

25-year-old Sikkimese woman raped by AIIMS doctor

A neurosurgeon from AIIMS and two others were arrested for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman, who had been trafficked from Sikkim.

The woman, wife of an armyman from Sikkim, was trafficked by a couple, Suman and Sandip Chhetry, and Dharamvir and Kamal on the pretext of getting her enrolled in a beautician course in the capital.

The incident came to light when she managed to escape her captors and reach Hauz Khas police station. On the basis of a complaint, a raid was conducted and the five people, including Dr Meher Taj (27), were arrested.

Sonam Kapoor hospitalised, tests positive for swine flu

Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor was, on Friday (February 27, 2015), tested H1N1 virus positive after she was admitted into Sterling Hospital on 150 ft Ring Road in Rajkot.

Sonam, who is in Gondal town of Rajkot district, some 30 km away from Rajkot, for the shooting of the film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which also features Salman Khan, was rushed to hospital on Friday morning after she complained of viral fever.

Sajad Lone rushes to Jammu to be sworn in as minister

Sajad Gani Lone, former separatist leader and chief of the Peoples Conference, rushed to Jammu to join the PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir as a cabinet minister Sunday, a source said.

“He received a call from the senior BJP leadership at the centre to reach to Jammu,” a source close to Lone told IANS on phone from Srinagar.

The source added Lone had flown back to Srinagar a day before, but decided to rush back to Jammu late Saturday by road.
