Delhi not even an ”Asia-class city” in cleanliness: says HC

Castigating municipal bodies here for not clearing garbage, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday observed that the Capital was “not even an Asia-class city” in terms of cleanliness.

“How will we make Delhi a world-class city? It is not even an Asia-class city. Despite all the norms and a number of safai karamcharis available, we find that garbage is strewn on virtually all roads of Delhi and drains are not being cleaned properly,” a Bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva said.

Obama won’t meet Netanyahu before Israeli elections

US President Barack Obama said that he will not meet the visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March, because the Israeli leader’s US trip would be too close to the elections in his country.

“I’m declining to meet with him (Netanyahu) simply because our general policy is (that) we don’t meet with any world leader two weeks before their election,” Obama said in an interview to CNN. “I think that’s inappropriate, and that’s true with some of our closest allies.”

SIMI activists granted bail

Hyderabad City Police had to cut a sorry figure when the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Nampally Criminal Court granted bail to two alleged SIMI activists belonging to Maharastra, namely Shah Mudassir and Shoeb Ahmed Khan who were arrested on 22nd October 2014 from Secunderabad Railway Station. Gopalpuram Police of Secunderabad had arrested them claiming that they were planning a terrorist attack on the country. They were trying to go to Afghanistan. After arresting them the case handed over to Special Investigation Team. They were interrogated in police custody.

Throat infection hits Bedi on campaign trail

Out to campaign in the BJP strongholds of Karol Bagh and Rajendra Place, the party’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi on Wednesday had to keep mostly silent as she was suffering from a severe throat infection.

All that Bedi, whom the party has said will hold as many as 70 rallies in Delhi ahead of the Feb. 7 polls, managed to say was that she will be victorious at the hustings and would come out to meet the people thereafter.

Gang of college students held for bike, cellphone thefts

Four college students and a school dropout of a gang, wanted in connection with a case of attempt to kidnap and theft of bikes as well as high-end cellphones, were today arrested from Gandhi Nagar here, police said.

The accused collegians Ninavath Vinod Kumar, N Santosh, V Chandrasekhar, N Hanvma and school dropout G Sateesh were arrested, police said adding that their juvenile friend, too, has been apprehended.

The accused were involved in snatching high-value cellphones from female pedestrians in Banjara Hills area and also committed two-wheeler thefts, they said.

IS militants ‘indoctrinating kids’ by reading bedtime stories of jihad to them

In a bid to radicalize children and “desensitize” them towards acts of violence, the Islamic State ( IS) militants have been reading bedtime stories of jihad to their kids and showing them snaps of killings, a report said.

In a parenting guide, called the “Sister’s Role in Jihad,” the terror outfit urged mothers to show their children terror websites and read tales of jihad to them, reported The Daily Star.

Prove abducted pilot still alive: Jordan tells IS

Jordan said Wednesday that it wants the Islamic State (IS) to prove that the Jordanian pilot abducted by the militant group last month was still alive.

“Jordan has asked the Islamic State (IS) to provide a proof of life for the Jordanian pilot it captured last year (December 2014), but we have not received a reply,” Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said in a statement, according to a Xinhua report.

Earlier in the day, the Jordanian government said it was willing to swap Sajida Rishawi, an Iraqi suicide bomber, with captured pilot Muath Kasasbeh.

Bird flu outbreak confirmed in 11 Nigerian states

The Nigerian government Wednesday confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in 11 states.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwumi Adesina, made the disclosure at an emergency meeting on avian influenza (bird flu) in Abuja, according to a Xinhua report.

The states affected by the outbreak of the disease were Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Imo, Oyo and Jigawa, the minister said.

He announced that the government had approved funds to compensate farmers affected by the outbreak.

S. Jaishankar is new foreign secretary

S. Jaishankar, the Indian envoy to the US, has been appointed the new foreign secretary of India.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, in a decision taken Wednesday, decided to “curtail the tenure” of incumbent Sujatha Singh “with immediate effect”.

The committee, in a note put up on the website of the Department of Personnel and Training, said Jaishankar, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1977 batch, has been appointed the new foreign secretary for a period of two years.

Sujatha Singh had assumed office in August 2013 and was due to retire in August this year.

WB govt must take action to drive out infiltrators: Togadia

VHP leader Praveen Togadia on Wednesday said the West Bengal government should take timely action against infiltrators or else the state will be a part of “greater Bangladesh” in the near future.

Addressing a public rally at Rampurhat, the VHP leader said “The way the demography of this state is changing, soon it will be a part of greater Bangladesh. The state government must take time-bound action to oust the infiltrators from this state.”

“The people must remain alert about the infiltrators and they should not be given any scope to stay, earn or do business here,” Togadia added.

Mercury dips further after overnight snowfall, rain in HP

The severe cold wave conditions persisted in most parts of Himachal Pradesh today as the mercury dropped by a few notches following overnight snowfall and rain in isolated places.

The region had a clear day in the morning but icy winds swept the hills and valleys and the sky was overcast and thick fog engulfed the landscape as the day advanced.

The clouded sky and fog kept the day temperature low while the minimum temperature dipped to minus 11.9 degrees Celsius at Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti, and minus 5.6 degrees at Kalpa in Kinnaur.

Congress promises housing for Delhi’s slum dwellers

The Congress Wednesday said it would provide housing to all slum dwellers here if voted to power, a day after party vice president Rahul Gandhi promised right to shelter to the poor in the national capital.

“If we come to power, we will pass a bill in the assembly which will benefit all the slum dwellers of the capital. This bill will ensure multi-storey flats of 25 to 40 square metre area to every family living in slums,” Congress campaign chief for Delhi Ajay Maken said.

The slums in Delhi with a population of nearly 18 lakh were once a stronghold of the Congress.

RLD stages protest against land acquisition ordinance

Rashtriya Lok Dal activists today staged a protest against land acquisition ordinance and raised slogans against Central government at district collectorate here.

“The policies of the BJP government are totally anti-farmer and the Central government has forcefully brought the land acquisition ordinance,” RLD district president Manveer Singh, while addressing the party activists, said.

He said the ordinance will adversely affect crores of farmers in the country. Singh also handed over a memorandum to the District Magistrate addressed to the president of India on the issue.

Cong deploys its heavyweights in Delhi poll campaign

Relegated to the third position in Delhi, Congress today pressed into service an array of its heavywieghts, who include current and former Chief Ministers and union ministers, to oversee its campaign in Assembly elections.

Seven senior leaders have been put in charge of one Lok Sabha constituency each in the national capital, Congress sources said. Delhi has 70 assembly and seven Lok Sabha seats and each leader will monitor campaign in 10 assembly seats.

Kejriwal to challenge EC order in High Court: AAP

Arvind Kejriwal will move the High Court after the Assembly elections against the Election Commission (EC) order directing him to desist from commenting on BJP and Congress allegedly distributing money to voters, AAP said tonight.

A spokesperson of the party said that, “We will move the High Court against the Election Commission after the election. But at the moment we will fully respect the EC order”.

Earlier, the EC had warned Kejriwal that it will be constrained to take stern action against him in the event of any further violation.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly Wednesday revealed that his biggest fear in his cricketing career was to have not scored an international hundred at his home ground, the historic Eden Gardens.

“My biggest fear was that I thought I would never get a hundred at the Eden. But then it came against Pakistan,” Ganguly said.

UN deeply concerned over south Lebanon situation

The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Sigrid Kaag expressed Wednesday deep concern over the serious deterioration of the security situation in South Lebanon following the attack on the Israeli Defence Forces in the area of the Shebaa Farms.

Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia militant party, claimed Wednesday responsibility for an attack that targeted an Israeli army patrol in the occupied Shebaa Farms leading to the death of two Israeli soldiers.

The attack prompted Israel to launch combined aerial and ground strikes at Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

Syrian peace process to be prolonged: Russian minister

The peace process in Syria will be protracted and knotty, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday at a meeting with participants in the inter-Syrian consultations in Moscow.

“Russia’s efforts to assist the Syrian peace settlement are absolutely transparent,” he said.

“We’re all open to collaboration on the basis of principles of the UN Charter with anyone interested in offering genuine support to the efforts that may bring about the start of peace settlement,” he said.

Sunanda case: Amar Singh questioned

Politician Amar Singh was today questioned for nearly two hours by a special team of Delhi Police probing the Sunanda Pushkar case after he had recently claimed that she had spoken to him about the IPL controversy a couple of days before her death.

Sources said that Singh was asked about what Sunanda had told him regarding the IPL controversy and about allegedly taking the blame for Shashi Tharoor.
