Students raise awareness ahead of World AIDS Day

Students held posters and raised awareness on the eve of World AIDS Day at a railway platform in Chennai on Sunday.

December 01 is celebrated as World AIDS Day and on this occasion an NGO, ‘Indian Development Foundation’, organised an awareness programme at Chennai’s Egmore railway station.

Posters bearing several messages on AIDS with symbolic red ribbon were displayed at the station to grab the attention of passengers. A sizeable number of schoolchildren participated in the programme.

Israel remembers plight of Jews who fled Arab world

Israel today marked the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Arab countries after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

In a bid to draw attention to their plight, Israel formally marked the event with a state ceremony under a new law naming November 30 as the anniversary.

“Nearly 800,000 came here and the rest (around 56,000) went to the United States, France, Italy and elsewhere,” said Meir Kahlon, chairman of the Central Organisation for Jews from Arab Countries and Iran.

2 arrested in Kashmere Gate robbery case

Two men have been arrested for allegedly robbing a delivery agent of Rs 27 lakh in North Delhi’s Kashmere Gate area last month, police said today.

The victim, identified as Ram Prakash (40), had allegedly committed suicide six days after the incident.

The two accused, identified as Sanjay and Subhash were arrested from Bihar and around Rs 3 lakhs cash was recovered from their possession.

One dead, 7 injured in Ghaziabad building collapse

One person was killed and seven other were injured when an under-construction building today collapsed in the city, police said.

SSP Dharmendra Yadav said the incident took place in Tronica City police station area of the district where the under-construction building collapsed and those working in it were feared to be trapped under the debris.

He said efforts are being made to rescue those trapped in the debris.

Yadav said one person has died while seven others injured have been sent to hospital for treatment.

JSW Steel defers Italian steel co acquisition

JSW Steel Ltd, the third largest Indian steel maker, today said it has deferred the proposed acquisition of Italy’s Lucchini SpV.

“For the time being, plans for India is much stronger and larger. We want to focus in India…. We have deferred our decision to invest in the Italian project,” JSW Steel chairman and managing director Sajjan Jindal said.

He was speaking on the sidelines of inauguration of Ispat Pragati Bhawan, the new office of Institute of Steel Development & Growth (Insdag) in the city.

JSW’s Bengal project on ‘hold’

JSW Steel has put its West Bengal steel and power plant on ‘hold’ over uncertainty of raw material linkages for the proposed Rs 35,000 crore project.

“We have put the project on hold. Without both raw material (coal and iron-ore) it is very difficult to go ahead with the project,” JSW Steel Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal said here today on the sidelines of inauguration of Ispat Pragati Bhavan of Insdag.

5 mutilated bodies found in southern Mexico

Authorities say they’ve found five mutilated bodies in a region of southern Mexico where 11 decapitated corpses were found just a few days ago.

An official at the Guerrero state prosecutor’s office said the five were found last night in the back of a vehicle abandoned in the municipality of Chilapa. The official spoke today on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the news media. He said they have not yet been identified

Canada ‘aware’ of reports that citizen kidnapped in Syria

Canada said today it was “aware of reports” that one of its nationals may have been kidnapped in Syria, amid suggestions it could have been a woman fighting alongside Kurdish forces in Kobane.

The US-based monitoring group SITE said Islamic State jihadists claimed a woman described as a “female Zionist soldier” had been captured in the embattled Syrian border town.

Some jihadists said the woman might be Gill Rosenberg, a Canadian-Israeli dual national who had served in the Israel Defense Forces and had volunteered to fight with the Kurds, the monitoring group said.

Pope Francis today said he is ready to go anywhere, anytime to meet with the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, even while acknowledging that he doubts the day will ever come that Catholic and Orthodox theologians will agree to end the 1,000-year schism.

Francis spoke to reporters today en route home from Turkey, where he made a remarkable gesture of deference to the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians by bowing down to receive his blessing.

One man died and 11 others suffered minor injuries after a fight broke out outside Atletico Madrid’s soccer stadium between its fans and those of visiting team Deportivo La Coruna, officials has said.

Madrid’s Clinico San Carlos hospital said a man died of injuries sustained in the clash between rival fans that broke out hours before the game yesterday near the Vicente Calderon stadium. Police made several arrests.

New trailer for the ‘Shaun The Sheep’ movie revealed

‘Shaun the Sheep: The Movie’ has released a new trailer.

Richard Starzak and Mark Burton have directed the film, based on Aardman’s popular children’s TV series, reported Ace Showbiz.

The film will see Shaun and his friends travel into the big city to rescue the farmer, after their trouble-making results in him leaving his home.

Justin Fletcher is reprising his role as Shaun, while John Sparkes will take on the voice of Bitzer.

India remain sixth in ICC Test rankings

India remained sixth while Pakistan dropped a place to fourth after their heavy innings defeat against New Zealand, in the latest Test rankings released by the ICC, in Dubai on Sunday.

The win meant that New Zealand has gained one rankings point and now lies two points adrift of sixth placed India, who have 96 points. The result also saw the Black Caps increase the gap with eight-placed West Indies to 19.

South Africa is on top of the Test table at 124 points while Australia is in second place at 117 points.

‘Gossip Girl’ actor William Baldwin is joining the cast of ‘Hot in Cleveland’ for the show’s final season.

The 51-year-old actor will have a recurring role as a Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter investigating a scandal involving Melanie (Valerie Bertinelli) and her caretaker Elka (Betty White), according to The Wrap.

His character Jake soon finds himself falling for Melanie, even as he continues his investigation against her.

Baldwin is a television veteran, who has been a cast member on the hit programmes ‘Gossip Girl’, ‘Hawaii Five-0′ and’ Parenthood’.

Mexican actor Roberto Gomez Bolanos dies

Mexican actor Roberto Gomez Bolanos, who was the inspiration behind ‘The Simpsons’s Bumblebee Man, has died.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the actor – who was better known to Latin American audiences as Chespirito – died aged 85.

He passed away in Cancun on November 28 of heart failure.

Gomez Bolanos had a career over six decades and wrote and produced many of the sitcoms he starred in, including ‘El Chavo del Ocho’, ‘El Chapulin Colorado’ and ‘Chespirito’.
