Four killed in rebel ambush in Philippines

Four civilians were killed and four others were injured when New People’s Army (NPA) rebels opened fire at a vehicle in the Philippine province of Agusan del Sur, military officials said Monday.

The ambush happened at around 5.30 p.m. Sunday when a group of local people were on their way home after attending a church activity, said Jolito Borces, civil military operations officer of the 75th Infantry Battalion, reported Xinhua

Borces said two people died on the scene and two others died upon arrival at the hospital. The four injured civilians included an eight-year-old girl.

Uruguay ruling candidate Vazquez wins presidential runoff

The ruling Broad Front (FA) party’s candidate Tabare Vazquez won the presidential runoff Sunday with 53 percent of the votes, according to quick counts by polling companies.

Pollster Equipos showed Vazquez winning with 53 percent of votes compared to 42 percent garnered by centre-right National Party (PN)’s candidate Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, Xinhua reported.

Meanwhile, pollster Cifra projected that Vazquez winning with 53.5 percent against 41 percent obtained by Lacalle Pou.

Pro-democracy protesters clash with police in Hong Kong

Hundreds of pro-democracy activists fought running battles with police outside government headquarters Sunday night as a fresh protest to demand democratic elections intensified here, media reported.

Riot police used pepper spray and batons to stop protesters from storming the Admiralty compound and lay siege to chief executive Leung Chun-ying’s office, the South China Morning Post reported Monday.

The escalation was announced at 9 p.m., when the Hong Kong Students Federation representative Nathan Law Kwun-chung urged protesters to head towards the government offices.

Ghanta Srinivas Rao complains to Governor for Inter Exams

Aruna Bahuguna, IPS, bereaved

S. Jayaraman, IPS (Retd) passed away this morning. He retired as special secretary (Internal Security), Ministry of Home Affairs on September 30 last year.
Jayaraman joined Intelligence Bureau in 1984 and served in Delhi, Mumbai, Trivandrum, Kohima and Hyderabad. He took over as Special Secretary, MHA in January 2013. He was married to Aruna Bahuguna, IPS. He is survived by two sons. (NSS)
