UP appoints officers to expedite pending court cases

The Uttar Pradesh government has asked officials to expedite thousands of cases pending in different courts, officials said Friday.

It has done so by asking divisional commissioners and district magistrates to direct district level nodal officers to contact district judges on a daily basis and to provide the list of cases to be taken up.

Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan has said this needs to be done promptly so that cases pending for many years could be disposed of.

Healthy diet for infants prevents obesity later

If you do not want your baby to grow up into an overweight adult, make sure you feed him or her healthy diet from the very first year, a study suggests.

Babies who eat diets high in sugar, fat, protein and dairy products show faster gain in body mass index scores from ages six to 12 months, the findings showed.

“Dietary patterns are harder to change later if you ignore the first year, a critical period for the development of taste preferences and the establishment of eating habits,” said lead author Xiaozhong Wen, assistant professor at University at Buffalo in the US.

Luqman [the wise] (alaihissalam) is a well-known sage, whose advice to his son has been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Luqman’s sayings and the words of advice he gave to his son, contain rare wisdom, and quite a number of Traditions refer to “Luqman’s advice to his son”.

One of these are: “O my dear son, sit in the company of the Ulema (religious scholars) frequently and listen carefully to what the wise men say, for Allah gives life to the dead hearts by the ‘Nur (light)’ of wisdom, just as He revives the dead earth by heavy life-giving rains.”

India would’ve been different if Patel was PM: Naidu

Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Friday said that if Sardar Vallabhbahi Patel had become the first prime minister of India, the fate of the “country would have been different”.

Speaking at the function at Vijay Chowk to mark Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary as National Unity Day, Naidu said Sardar Patel was foremost among leaders who had made sacrifices for country’s freedom.

Naidu said millions of people in the country have a feeling that history has not done justice to Sardar Patel, the first home minister of India.

Militants threaten to behead Malaysian captive

Abu Sayyaf militants have threatened to behead a Malaysian captive if ransom is not paid in November.

Fish breeder Chan Sai Chuin’s wife Chin Pek Nyen said the militants had not set any particular day for their November deadline but warned her they would kill him if the full ransom of RM 3 million (about $910,000) was not paid, the Malaysian Star reported.

She said the Abu Sayyaf gunmen made the threat during a call Thursday night.

Australians looking for surrogate mothers in India denied visas

Childless Australian couples looking for surrogate mothers in India are being denied visas to enter the country, media reported Friday.

Surrogacy advocates said India had effectively frozen out Australians from the surrogacy industry following recent revelations that a child was abandoned in India by an Australian couple, ABC reported.

“India has put a freeze on all new applications for new intended Australian parents wanting to engage in surrogacy,” said Sam Everingham from Surrogacy Australia.

Iraqi Peshmerga fighters cross into Kobani from Turkey to combat IS

Peshmerga fighters have reportedly started entering the besieged northern Syrian city of Kobani from Turkey to defend the town from Islamic State militants.

According to CNN, about 10 Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga fighters entered Kobani from the Turkish border in two vehicles, an activist and a Syrian Kurd fighter confirmed over the phone.

At least 150 Peshmerga fighters, earlier, had set out for Turkey from where they planned to cross into Syria to fight Islamic State (IS) militants besieging the town of Kobane.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said he had given instructions to officials of his ministry to formulate an effective counter-strategy to deal with the menace of cyber crime.

Indian-American duo held for sham $5.8m card transactions

Two Indian-Americans have been arrested by the FBI on charges of siphoning off more than $5.8 million by using fraudulent debit card transactions.

Alpeshkumar Patel, 30, and Vijaykumar Patel, 39, were arrested for stealing millions of dollars by using reloadable debit cards from September 2013 to March 2014, police said.

The duo, not related to each other, is expected to be produced before a Newark court and faces an imprisonment up to 20 years and a fine of more than $250,000, if found guilty.

Mediterranean-style diet may reduce risk of developing kidney disease

A new research has demonstrated that eating Mediterranean diet which includes fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes, and heart-healthy fats are linked with decreased risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

The study showed that dietary patterns that closely resembled the Mediterranean diet were linked with a 50 percent reduced risk of developing chronic kidney disease and a 42 percent reduced risk of experiencing rapid kidney function decline.

Hundreds of bodies of massacred Iraqi tribesmen fighting IS found in mass graves

Hundreds of bodies of Sunni Muslim tribesmen, reportedly massacred by Islamic State militants, have been found in mass graves in Western Iraq.

According to the BBC, the graves that were found in the province of Anbar may contain between 80 and 220 bodies, reports suggest.

Many of the bodies found are believed to be those of the Al Bu Nimr tribe members who had pledged their allegiance to Iraq’s Shia-dominated government in fighting IS.

It is believed that the IS militants may have killed around 600 prisoners at a Mosul jail which was earlier seized by the extremist group.
