70 Bajrang Dal supporters arrested during Assam bandh

Normal life was on Friday partially hit in Assam during a 12-hour state-wide bandh called by Bajrang Dal.

Around 70 Bajrang Dal supporters were arrested from all over the state for allegedly trying to damage property during the bandh, police officers said.

Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari told PTI that 18 Bajrang Dal supporters were arrested from the city for trying to forcefully implement the bandh, which has been called to protest the alleged links between AIUDF and jihadis in Bangladesh.

Pakistani actress Reema Khan has appealed to the new Indian Government to allow release of Pakistani movies, saying it would help in exchange of cultures of the two countries and develop their film industries.

Gadkari launches ETC system for Delhi-Mumbai Highway

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday launched the Electronic Toll Collection system for the Delhi-Mumbai Highway.

“In this new system, there can be no fake tolls. The data will be recorded so there can be no stealing. There would be all the information of the driver, on the toll card,” said Gadkari.

“We have tied up with two banks that is Axis and ICICI bank today. More banks can also come. In the coming time, this system will get revolutionalised. This is our step towards a digital India. I have given orders that before March, there should be over 350 tolls,” he added.

2G scam: Court frames charges against A. Raja, Kanimozhi and Karunanidhi’s wife

A special court on Friday charged former telecom minister A. Raja, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi and 16 others for money laundering in a case related to the 2G spectrum scam.

The court also framed charges against DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal.

“Charges framed against individuals and companies in money laundering case of 200 crores. All the accused have pleaded not guilty. The trial is going to continue,” said Vijay Aggarwal, the lawyer for the accused.

Bangalore child rape: Activists, parents protest against school

Hundreds of socio-political activists and parents Friday staged a massive demonstration against a private school in the city’s eastern suburb where a six-year-old girl student was allegedly raped twice this week by a teacher.

Seeking severe punishment to the suspect and stringent action against the school for the horrifying crime in its premises, many parents said the management was not forthcoming on what safety measures it had taken to protect their wards.

In addition, such a diet that restricts consumption of red meats, processed foods and sweets can reduce the risk of experiencing rapid kidney function decline by 42 percent, the findings showed.

“There is increasing evidence that poor diet is associated with kidney disease,” said co-researcher Minesh Khatri from Columbia University Medical Centre in the US.

US Sikh group criticises compensation to kin of 1984 riot victims

A Sikh rights group has criticised India’s decision to give Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims, saying compensation cannot be a substitute to the prosecution of the perpetrators.

Government has decided to give Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of 3,325 victims of the anti-Sikh riots triggered after assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group said the grant of the compensation cannot be a substitute to the “prosecution of 1984 genocide perpetrators”.

Affordable driverless cars for everyone within a decade

Driverless cars could be within the price range of the average person in just ten years, Australian researchers claim.

This will be made possible by a new ‘eyes and ears’ technology developed by researchers from Curtin University in Perth.

The technology comprises a dozen different sensors installed in an average car, paired with an algorithm that processes the large amount of data received.

This creates meaningful information which tells the car the nature and location of obstacles, researchers said.

IED defused in J&K’s Shopian district

Security forces Friday defused a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, averting a major tragedy.

Police said the IED was planted in a gas cylinder on Mughal Road by separatist guerrillas to target vehicles of the security forces. The road connects Kashmir Valley with Rajouri district in Jammu region.

“A patrol party of 44 Rashtriya Rifles detected a five-kg IED planted inside a handy gas cylinder near the Circuit House on Mughal Road. The IED was successfully defused by the bomb disposal squad,” a police officer said here.

1984 riots a dagger through India’s chest: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the 1984 anti-Sikh riots was “like a dagger pierced through India’s chest”.

“Our own people were murdered, the attack was not on a particular community but on the entire nation. It was like a dagger pierced through India’s chest,” Modi said while referring to the riots in his address on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that is being observed as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’.

Sunny seas found on Saturn’s moon Titan

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft caught a glimpse of bright sunlight reflecting from hydrocarbon seas as the spacecraft soared past Saturn’s moon Titan recently.

Earlier, Cassini had separately captured views of the polar seas and the sun glinting off them, but this is the first time both have been seen together in the same view, the US space agency said in a statement.

Titan’s seas are mostly liquid methane and ethane.

Before Cassini’s arrival at Saturn, scientists suspected that Titan might have bodies of open liquid on its surface.

Dalit student beaten up at law college in Muzaffarnagar

A first-year Dalit student was allegedly beaten up and casteist remarks were made against him when he opposed ragging at a law college here, police said Friday.

According to the victim, a third-year student of the college beat him up and hurled casteist remarks at him yesterday, police said.

Based on his complaint, the police is investigating the matter.

Bangladesh shuts down for 24-hours protesting death sentence of Islamist leader

Dhaka observed a 24-hour general strike on Thursday protesting the death sentence awarded to the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party chief, Motiur Rahman Nizami, by the Bangladesh war crimes tribunal, as supporters of Jamaat said the government had used the tribunal to weaken its political opponents.

However, supporters of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami league said they will not allow the call for shut down to be successful.

Students of Dhaka University staged a protest and shouted slogans against Jamaat-e-Islami and said Nizami must pay for the war crimes committed by him.

Bhopal gas tragedy: Union Carbide ex-chief Warren Anderson is dead

Former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson, wanted in India in connection with the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy which claimed over 3,000 lives in one of the world’s most lethal industrial accidents, has died in the US state of Florida aged 92.

Anderson, a Brooklyn carpenter’s son who ascended to the top of the Union Carbide Corporation, died on September 29 at a nursing home in Vero Beach, Florida but his death was not announced by his family and was confirmed from public records, the New York Times reported.

Police arrests IM terrorist

An Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist, wanted in connection with the 1992 attack at a PAC camp in Meerut, was arrested by a joint operation of Muzaffarnagar police and Anti-Terrorist Squad, police said today.

Saleem alias Patla was arrested last night from Khatoli town here, they said.

“Saleem was wanted in connection with the attack at a PAC camp in Meerut in 1992 and was absconding since then,” SSP H N Singh told PTI.

A probe into the matter is on, he said.

Teacher arrested for sexual assault of 6-year-old girl

A teacher was today arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old girl at a school here, as protests erupted with parents demanding answers from the institution which was found to have flouted safety norms.

The teacher, detained for questioning after the complaint was lodged yesterday by the victim’s mother, was arrested after he admitted to his guilt during “thorough” questioning, police officials said.

“He has been arrested,” Joint Commissioner of Police Hemant Nimbalkar told PTI.

‘350 national highways to have electronic toll plazas by Dec’

As many as 350 toll plazas on national highways across the country will adopt the electronic tax collection method from December 31, resulting in savings worth Rs 34,000 crore, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today said.

“By December 2015 we plan 350 Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) at all national highways across India which will help in savings of Rs 27,000 crore due to delays caused at tolls and Rs 7,000 crore worth of fuel will be saved,” the minister said while unveiling the ETC system on Delhi-Mumbai highway through computerised mode from Delhi.

Sharif backs PCB’s decision to nominate ex-boss Sethi for ICC president’s post

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s patron Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has reportedly backed the decision of the board’s chairman Shahryar khan and Board of Governors (BoG) to recommend former head Najam Sethi as Pakistan’s nominee for the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s presidency post.

The ICC is looking for a president for a one-year term that starts in July next year and former PCB chairman Sethi has been nominated for the same from Pakistan.

The PCB was to submit the name of its nominee till October 31 which it did a day before the deadline, The Dawn reported.

TS roads get 10K Crore fixed

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday decided to give a facelift to roads and decided to spend Rs.10, 000 crore to doll up the roads in all the 10 districts.

Rs. 1,000 crore for repairs and tenders will be alloted to each district.

A high-level meeting at the Secretariat was held by the CM to review the condition of roads in the state. Deputy CM Dr T. Rajaiah and finance Minister Etela Rajendar was also attended the meeting.

KCR also form a Cabinet sub-committee to study and suggest measures for development of roads. The committee will be lead by Dr Rajaiah.

Shiv Sena shields BJP, says swearing-in ceremony will wash off sins of NCP-Congress

Notwithstanding its decision to boycott the swearing-in of Devendra Fadnavis as Maharashtra Chief Minister, the Shiv Sena on Friday provided covering fire to BJP from criticism for organising a lavish event, saying the ceremony will “wash off sins” of the previous government.

“You (Congress and NCP) have looted Maharashtra in your 15-year-rule and siphoned off thousands of crores of public money. If you are now speaking about a huge amount of money being spent on the oath taking ceremony, it is nothing but hilarious,” the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.
