Tsunami Hit Indian Coast 1,000 Years Back: Study

Looking for data on past tsunamis for a better understanding of the natural phenomenon, a team of researchers has come upon evidence which suggests that the Indian coast was hit by a sea surge some 1,000 years back, before the tsunami of 2004 which caused massive destruction in the country.

The team from the Centre for Earth Sciences (CEaS) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) made its finding while pursuing studies in tsunami geology.

Microsoft launches revamped MSN site ahead of next Windows OS release

Microsoft has reportedly launched a completely redesigned MSN web portal right ahead of its scheduled Windows announcement.

New versions of its MSN apps will become available on Tuesday on its Windows and Windows Phone 8.1, reported Mashable.

The new website is built on Azure, Microsoft’s cloud platform, which the company expects will increase its reliability and “agility for a cloud-first, mobile-first world.”

Microsoft is scheduled to announce a new version of its Windows Operating System on Tuesday.

Honda to Invest Rs. 1,100 Crore to Set Up Two-Wheeler Plant in Gujarat

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has said it will invest Rs. 1,100 crore to set up a two-wheeler plant at Vithalapur village in Ahmedabad district as it signed a ‘state support agreement’ with the Gujarat Government for the purpose on Tuesday.

The pact was signed by D J Pandian, Additional Chief Secretary in the State Industries Department, and Keita Muramutsu, president-cum-CEO of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), in the presence of Chief Minister Anandi Patel in Gandhinagar.

Army helicopter crashes, three officers killed

An army helicopter today crashed moments after taking off from an airbase here, killing the two pilots and an engineer.

“The incident occurred this morning. Three officer were killed,” an army official said.

According to sources, the helicopter was on a routine flight.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the chopper appeared to be in trouble moments after taking off. It soon caught fire and crashed at the airbase.

Ex-Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s wife Ameeta, who is making her electoral debut in Maharashtra Assembly polls, and late BJP leader Gopinath Munde’s daughter Pankaja Munde are among the key women legislators testing their luck this time, with the Congress firmly in the driver’s seat fielding the highest number of women candidates.

Congress has fielded the highest number of women (27) candidates followed by BJP 21, NCP 16 and Shiv Sena 10 women candidates for the state Assembly polls.

3 students from Northeast beaten up in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar

Three students, including a girl, belonging to the Northeast region, were allegedly beaten up by some residents of Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi today.

According to police, the three youths are residents of Assam and are pursuing a course in photography. The incident took place when they were roaming around in Prakash Colony and clicking pictures.

“They had clicked pictures of an under-construction building when the owner of the property objected to it and questioned them over the issue. Soon, an altercation broke out during which some locals beat them up,” said a police officer.

Rupee falls 19 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee depreciated by 19 paise to trade at almost seven-month low of 61.94 against the US currency in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on capital outflows amidst the dollar’s gain against other currencies overseas.

Forex dealers said besides the dollar’s gains against other currencies overseas on the back of upbeat US data, increased demand for the American unit from importers and a weak opening in the domestic equity market, put pressure on the rupee.

Dhanush’s ‘Kaaka Muttai’ goes to Rome film fest

Southern actor-producer Dhanush’s Tamil drama “Kaaka Muttai”, which recently had its first world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, will next be screened at the Rome Film Festival starting Oct 16.

M. Manikandan-directed “Kaaka Muttai”, about two brothers living in a slum, will be screened in Alice Nella Citt – a parallel and independent section of the festival.

The film, which is co-produced by filmmaker Vetrimaaran, will also compete for the Taodue Camera D’ORO Prize for the best debut film.

Ladakh stand-off resolved: China Foreign Ministry

China on Tuesday said the stand-off with India at the Ladakh region has been resolved as both sides completed simultaneous withdrawal of troops, and underlined that the two nations have the ‘determination and capability’ to maintain peace and stability at the border areas.

“On September 30, the frontier defence troops of the two countries completed simultaneous withdrawal according to the steps formulated by the two sides and restored peace and tranquillity in the area,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Over 1.36 lakh Indian pilgrims reach Saudi Arabia for Hajj

All the 1,36,020 Indian pilgrims who will perform Haj this year have reached Saudi Arabia, officials said today.

“All the 1,36,020 Indian Haj pilgrims have reached Saudi Arabia with the last flight carrying 394 pilgrims from Mumbai arriving yesterday,” Indian Consul General B S Mubarak told PTI.

Yesterday was the last day of flight operations, he said. Two senior BJP leaders representing India at this year’s Haj also arrived yesterday.

67 dead, Over 42 lakh hit by floods in Assam in 2014: Govt

At least 67 people have lost their lives and over 42 lakh people across Assam were affected in three waves of floods this year, the government said yesterday.

“Assam has suffered huge losses in terms of lives, property, cropped land, dwelling units and infrastructure in three waves of flood this season… Altogether 67 persons lost their lives in this year’s flood,” an official release said.

The last deluge wrecked havoc in Kamrup and Goalpara districts, claiming several lives and leaving behind a trail of destruction, it said.

Action plan for effective implementation of “Janmabhumi Ma Ooru”

Government of Andhra Pradesh has allotted two IAS and one IFS officer to each district to oversee the effective implementation of“Janmabhumi Ma Ooru” from October 2 to 20. Issuing a GO in this connection Chief Secretary IYR Krishna Rao told that planning department will serve as nodal department and will prepare a report on state level by seeking report from each district on daily basis. This programme will be implemented in all gram panchayat and municipal wards. Government has appointed senior IAS officers to make the programme successful.

An unidentified militant was killed on Wednesday in an encounter with security forces during a joint search operation launched in the Afan area here.

The search operation was reportedly launched this morning after security forces received specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

The militants opened fire on the security forces as they were closing in the positions of the ultras and one militant was shot dead in retaliation.

Gorakhpur train accident: 12 dead, 45 seriously injured

At 12 least people have died and 45 have been left seriously injured, according to North-Eastern Railway General Manager Madhuresh Kumar, after the Krishak Express hit the Lucknow-Barauni Express near Gorakhpur late on Tuesday night.

“Minister of Railways has expressed profound grief over loss of innocent lives. He has announced enhanced ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for family members of the dead, Rs. 1 lakh for seriously injured and Rs. 20,000 for those injured non-critically. He also directed to provide best treatment to the injured,” Railways spokesperson Anil Saxena said.
