Supporters of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J.Jayalalithaa formed a human chain in support of the jailed leader in Chennai on Wednesday.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) workers formed a human chain involving more than 4,500 people in Chennai on Wednesday. Supporters hoped that she would come back to power.

EU’s Irish tax-deal probe may force Apple to repay billions of euros

Apple may have to repay billions of euros of legacy taxes as the European Commission opens an inquiry into the Irish tax deal.

According to the Guardian, the European commission formally opened an investigation into the deal on Tuesday as the outgoing competition commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, warned that the recipient of any illegal state aid – in this case Apple – would be liable to repay it.

Ireland is accused of granting “illegal state aid” to Apple between 1991 and 2007.

The probe could take as long as 18 months before reaching a conclusion.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott today said that he wished the burqa “was not worn” in the country while indicating his view on backing a call for a ban on the Muslim veil for women inside parliament.

‘Twilight’ saga will return with five short films exclusively on Facebook, it has been reported.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, as part of the initiative by Lionsgate , author Stephenie Meyer and Women in Film, called “The Storytellers, New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga,” a “multiphase contest” would be held, to select at least five female filmmakers to helm the new short films.

Pakistani loses job for filming Rehman Malik holding up international flight

The man who shot a video showing passengers preventing Pakistan’s former Interior Minister Rehman Malik from boarding an international flight for being late has been sacked from his job, a report said.

Arjumand Hussain said that he was not given any reason for his dismissal and does not regret taking a stand against the “VIP culture,” reported the BBC.

His employers have however, denied that his dismissal was based on the video that went viral on the internet.

SBI cuts short-term deposit rates to 6% State Bank of India has reduced the short-term deposit rates by 1 percentage point for amount below Rs 1 crore, second such move this month. In an exchange filing on Tuesday, the banking giant said it has reduced the pricing of short-term deposits of below Rs 1 crore to 6 percent from 7 percent now for a maturity of 7 to 45 days.

US, India to collaborate on Mars exploration

India and the US, after sending their own respective spacecraft into Mars’ orbit, have now agreed to cooperate on future explorations of the Red Planet, which America said will yield “tangible benefits” to both the countries and the world at large.

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s bail plea hearing by a vacation bench has been adjourned till October 7 next week.

The Karnataka High Court had earlier agreed to hear the bail plea on Wednesday after Jayalalitha’s lawyers filed a memo seeking a speedy hearing.

Jayalalithaa, her aide Sasikala and two others were convicted in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case by a special court in Bangalore on September 27.

Gorakhpur accident: Railway minister announces compensation; loco pilot, driver suspended

Union Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda said here on Wednesday that the loco pilot and driver of the Krishak express have been suspended after 12 people died and 40 were left injured as the former hit the Lucknow-Barauni Express near Gorakhpur late on Tuesday night.

“The accident was due to the loco-pilot overshotting the signal near Gorakhpur. The loco pilot and driver have been suspended immediately. We will take further action according to provisions in the Railways Act,” Gowda told ANI here.

Labourer falls from crane, dies

A labourer died after falling from Crane on Monday evening hours. According to Jeedimetla police 40-year-old Ch Shanker Rao, resident of Phase 1 of Jeedimetla, accidentally fell down from Crane while working due to which he received multiple injuries. He was rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment however doctors declared him brought dead.

A case has been registered by Jeedimetla police and the body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

Fatal fall from height
(Siasat News): A man accidentally fell down from a height during the repairing work of a machine. The deceased is identified as Shankar Rao, 40.

As per the details, the deceased has been working as a technician in an engineering company in Jeedimetla phase-I. He was busy cleaning a machine when he lost balance in fell down in suspicious circumstances.

He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died during the treatment. Police is further investigating.
