Indian-origin man attacked in Singapore

A 29-year-old Indian-origin man has been attacked at a Singapore nightclub and a suspect was today charged for slashing his neck, media reported today.

Mohamed Asrafd Peer Mohamed (22) is accused of grievously hurting part-time bouncer Prakash Jagajeevan by attacking him with a glass fragment outside Infinity Club at Sentosa on September 28, the Strait Times reported.

Asrafd will be back in court on October 29.

The suspect was arrested yesterday, police said.

MHA serves notices to 10,331 NGOs for not filing returns

The Home Ministry has served notices to more than 10,000 NGOs receiving foreign funds for failing to submit their mandatory annual returns for three consecutive years from 2009 to 2012.

On scrutiny of records, it has been found that the mandatory annual returns for the years 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 have not been received from these associations. Notices are being sent to these associations, the Home Ministry said in its notice.

While it was known that smoking during pregnancy could have a number of harmful effects on the developing foetus, the study, led by the researchers of University of Newcastle, is the first comprehensive animal model to show the mechanism by which smoking can affect the fertility of male offspring.

Bangladesh minister may be sacked for anti-Islam remarks

A senior Bangladeshi minister, who accompanied Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the UN, may be sacked for allegedly making anti-Islam comments, triggering widespread protests in the country.

Newspapers quoting anonymous officials said a process was initiated to remove Telecom Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui for allegedly making the comments at a rally of Bangladeshis in New York two days ago.

“The prime minister is very annoyed with his comments and ordered initiatives for his removal,” a senior official said.

Researchers used a mouse animal model, which directly mimics human smoking, to look at what effects the mother’s smoking during pregnancy and breast feeding has on the fertility of her male pups.

IS militants control 40 percent of Iraq’s annual wheat production: UN

The United Nations has estimated that Islamic State militants now control as much as 40 percent of Iraq’s annual production of wheat which is one of the staple foods in the country along with barley and rice.

The militant group is depriving the Yazidi and Christian minorities of food supplies in order to tighten their grip in the captured areas, reported News.com.au.

In northern Iraq and neighbouring Syria, IS militants have recruited silo operators to help run their production.

Bihar Minister runs for his life as mob attacks him

In a shocking incident from Bihar, a state minister had to run for his life from an angry mob. The incident occurred at the Tara Chandi temple in Rohtas district of Sasaram, where state Culture Minister Vinay Bihari was chief guest at a programme.

The poor sound quality and sitting arrangements had infuriated the gathering which started pelting stones at the dais forcing the minister and officials to run for cover.

Robert Downey Jr. excited about ‘little girl’

Actor Robert Downey Jr., who is awaiting the birth of his daughter with wife Susan, is confident that the experience will be “great”.

“It should be great. I wonder (what) a little girl Downey will be like. I’m sure she’ll let us know,” accesshollywood.com quoted Robert as saying.

The child, who is due in November, will be Robert and Susan’s second child after their two-year-old son Exton.

Two Indian centenarians to perform Haj this year

A 109-year-old Indian man is among the two centenarians from the country in Saudi Arabia, who will perform Haj this year.

Injil Hossain Biswas from Murshidabad in West Bengal, is the oldest Indian Haj pilgrim at the age of 109.

100-year-old Abdur Rahim from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, is the second centenarian among India’s Haj pilgrims.

A third pilgrim named Fida Husain from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, is also among one of the oldest pilgrims from India performing Haj this year. He is 98 years old.

All of them have come through India’s Haj Committee.

Rice likely to hit poor with Rs.3 hike

The Telangana Government is contemplating a hike in price as well as quantity of rice given on subsidy to white ration card holders through the public distribution system. The proposal, if approved, can have “severe political implications” on the ruling TRS government.

At present, rice is supplied for just Rs 1 per kg under the Mana Biyyam (Our Rice) scheme that was announced by former chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy in January 2013.

Tsunami hit Indian coast 1,000 yrs back: Study

Looking for data on past tsunamis for a better understanding of the natural phenomenon, a team of researchers has come upon evidence which suggests that the Indian coast was hit by a sea surge some 1,000 years back, before the tsunami of 2004 which caused massive destruction in the country.

The team from the Centre for Earth Sciences (CEaS) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) made its finding while pursuing studies in tsunami geology.
