Honda Motorcycle sales crosses 4 lakh units in Sep

Two-wheeler maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India sales zoomed 33 percent last month as compared to the corresponding period of Sep 2013, the company said.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the company said it closed last month with 438,521 units, up from 328,907 units sold in Sep 2013.

For the first time in the company’s history, monthly sales have crossed 400,000 units.

Annu Rani grabs a bronze in women’s javelin throw

Indian athlete Annu Rani won a bronze medal in the women’s Javelin throw event of the Asian Games, with a personal best effort of 59.53m, here today.

Annu achieved the mark in her first attempt as she led the field for a while before being overtaken by China’s Li Zhang and Lingwei Li, who won gold and silver respectively.

Annu’s first attempt proved to be her best as her later attempts were far below than the first. However, she bettered her own record of 58.83m, which she had set in June this year during the National championship in Lucknow.

Khammam to have Urdu as its second official language

The T-government is contemplating to add Khammam also in the list of districts where Urdu is declared as second official language.

At present, in nine districts of the State, Urdu enjoys the second official language status.

Deputy CM Mohammed Mehmood Ali looked keen on this matter and at his instance; a proposal has been moved by the Minorities Welfare Department. A decision is likely to be taken when Mr. Ali returns from Saudi Arabia where he has gone to perform Haj.

Riteish Deshmukh was seen in the first two parts of “Kyaa Kool Hain Hum” franchise. For the third instalment, Krushna Abhishek has been finalised, but the actor doesn’t like it when people say that he has “replaced” the original actor.

“I am doing the third part of ‘Kyaa Kool Hain Hum’ franchise. Riteish is not doing it this time. So, I will be seen with Tusshar (Kapoor) and Aftab (Shivdasani).

“Riteish left the film because I think he doesn’t want to do sex comedy anymore. I don’t know the reason, but won’t say I’ve replaced him,” he told IANS.

New Pension, Ration cards from Nov

Fresh pension and ration cards are going to be issue from November as the T-Government is planning bring in complete transparency into various schemes designed for poorer sections.

Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender and Cabinet sub-committee emphasised on issuing new cards in place of the existing ones to ensure zero pilferage.

Talking to media, the minister said applications would be invited from eligible beneficiaries of PDS and pension schemes till October 15.

AP govt presents sarees to Kanakdurga

Andhra Pradesh government today presented silk sarees to goddess Kanakadurga here which has been a convention to mark the Dussehra festival.

State Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao presented the sarees on the day of ‘Mula Nakshatra’ to the deity.

Rao told the reporters that Dussehra will be celebrated as a state festival in future.

Re gains 14 against dollar at 61.61

Recovering from nearly seven-month low level, the rupee today closed 14 paise higher at 61.61 against the US currency amid fresh dollar selling by exporters and some banks ahead of long weekend holidays.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit commenced lower at 61.92 and immediately touched a low of 61.95, a level not seen since March 4, 2014 when it had logged an intra-day low of 62.15.

Wanted: Chewing gum remover to clean up Queen’s palaces

The Queen is looking to hire a cleaner to remove sticky chewing gum left by visitors to royal residences.

An official advert for the 16,000 pound per year job says the successful applicant should “arrange for the removal of chewing gum from the Historic and State Apartments”.

The post is listed on the British Monarchy website and would reportedly be split between Buckingham Palace and Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Wife’s punishment pushes husband into diabetic coma in Dubai

A 50-year-old Arab man slipped into diabetic coma in Dubai after his wife locked him up in bathroom to “teach him a lesson” for remarrying.

He made a distress call to the Dubai Unified Ambulance telling them that he was on the verge of unconsciousness.

When paramedics reached his house, his wife tried to convince them to not help her husband as she “wanted to teach him a lesson” and prevent him from visiting his second wife.

The man, however, did not press charges after the Dubai Police helped him settle the dispute amicably with his wife.

Over 1,100 killed in Iraq violence in September

A total of 1,119 Iraqis were killed and 1,946 injured in terror attacks and violence in September in Iraq, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said Wednesday.

It said 854 civilians and 265 security personnel were killed while 1,604 civilians were wounded. An additional 342 security members were wounded in terrorist and violent acts, reports Xinhua.

The UNAMI excluded the casualties in Anbar province where fierce clashes flared up after Iraqi police dismantled an anti-government protest site outside Ramadi in December last year.

Turkey seeks parliament’s approval to send troops to Iraq

The Turkish government has submitted a request to parliament seeking authorisation to send troops to Syria and Iraq to combat Islamic State (IS) militants, officials here Wednesday said.

The proposal, sent Tuesday to the Turkish Legislative Council, seeks its approval to send the forces to the two countries and to allow the presence of foreign troops in Turkey.

Ankara justifies the request with the need to take all measures in the framework of international law against terrorist threats to Turkey’s national security.

A Maoist, carrying a reward of Rs.100,000 on his head, was arrested in Odisha, police said Wednesday.

Singa Kattami alias Mahesh, 25, was arrested from the Sudhakonda area of Malkangiri district following a joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and police late Tuesday, Inspector General of Police (southwestern range) Yashwant Jethwa told IANS.

He was a cadre of the local operation squad of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist and worked under Udaya, the divisional secretary of the Malkangiri division of the rebels, Jethwa said.

2 mn Muslims, including 1.3 lakh Indians, begin Haj tomorrow

Over two million Muslims, including 136,000 Indians, will begin Haj when they assemble in the valley of Mina as Saudi authorities said preparations have been completed for the world’s largest annual gathering after the city underwent a multi-billion overhaul.

Mecca Governor Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah said preparations were complete for Haj which begins tomorrow.

“The plan for welcoming pilgrims was successful. All government and private agencies should mobilise their human and technical resources to make the annual event a big success,” he said.

One dies, dozen hurt in Bengal firecracker unit blast

A worker was killed and 12 others were injured in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory in West Bengal Wednesday, police said.

The blast took place in Hooghly district’s Pandua area.

A police officer said several of the injured were hospitalised in serious condition.

The police officer said the factory at Chapta village did not have the license required for setting up and running firecracker making units.

Police were looking for the factory owner who seems to have gone underground after the blast, which severely damaged the facility.

An active ingredient in the anti-impotence drug Viagra could cause unusual visual responses in people who carry a common mutation for eye disease and may have long-term detrimental effects on their vision, researchers have warned.

The ingredient, Sildenafil, can inhibit an enzyme which is important for transmitting light signals from the retina to the brain, and it is already known from clinical trials of Viagra that its use in high doses can cause transient disturbances in the vision of some healthy people.

A monk in Vietnam could face disciplinary measures after photos of him posing with an iPhone 6 were posted on Facebook, a Buddhist leader said Wednesday.

Thich Thanh Cuong, head of a Buddhist monastery in Hai Duong province, was shown eating in restaurants, wearing civilian clothes and posing with the mobile phone, Bangkok Post reported.

The video clip and photos went viral on the internet, attracting widespread criticism.

The photos have been deleted since.
