Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Vijay Ghat, whose birth anniversary coincides with Mahatma Gandhi.

Secret service director resigns over White House security lapse

US, Brazil strike new deal to end cotton trade dispute

The US and Brazil reached an agreement Wednesday to end a decade-long cotton dispute between the two countries.

Brazil sued the US in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on cotton subsidies in 2002. The WTO handed down a ruling in 2009 in Brazil’s favour, allowing Brazil to take retaliation measures on imports of US goods.

To avert Brazil’s countermeasures, which would affect approximately $800 million worth of US trade, the US agreed in 2010 to pay about $150 million a year to Brazil, Xinhua reported.

Obama ‘deeply concerned’ over Israel’s settlement expansion plan

Prime Minister paid floral tributes at Rajghat-the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi on the banks of the Yamuna river. Union Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu was also present on this occasion.

A minute’s silence was observed at the black stone memorial by Prime Minister Modi.

Catalonia to go ahead with peaceful referendum

President of Spain’s Catalonia autonomous community Artur Mas Wednesday said he has not changed his mind about the region’s independence referendum despite the Spanish Constitutional Court declaring it unconstitutional.

The court declared Catalonia’s proposed referendum invalid following an appeal by the Spanish government.

US sends 700 soldiers to Liberia to fight Ebola

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has authorised the deployment of 700 soldiers to Liberia to help with the fight against the Ebola epidemic there, the Defence Department said in a statement Wednesday.

The troops will be deployed in late October to supervise the construction of Ebola treatment units, conduct site surveys and provide engineering expertise in an area with a range of infrastructure repair needs, Xinhua reported.
