Sparking a controversy, music legend KJ Yesudas on Thursday said he resented women wearing jeans, saying this went against Indian culture.

“Women should not cause trouble to others by wearing jeans….What should be covered should be covered,” Yesudas said at a function organised by a voluntary organisation in connection with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram.

The 74-year-old singer said this kind of dress went against Indian culture which valued simplicity and amiability as the greatest qualities of women.

Cherry juice may help fight gout: Study

Drinking cherry juice concentrate may help patients beat gout, according to new research.

Tart cherries have long been researched for their association with pain relief ranging from gout and arthritis joint pain to exercise-related muscle pain, researchers said.

The study is the first to report consumption of Montmorency tart cherries caused changes in uric acid metabolism, which can have an impact on joint pain.

The study also detected increases in specific anthocyanin compounds in the bloodstream after consuming tart cherries.

Lawyer alleges slapping by Maneka Gandhi, police probes

Police have been asked to probe complaint of a lawyer who has alleged that Union minister and local MP, Maneka Gandhi, on Thursday slapped him.

D K Verma, a resident of Barkehda area, complained that some BJP workers arrived at his house here this morning and forcibly took him to the Union minister at her camp office in Shanker Salvent Bhawan on Bisalpur road, Superintendent of Police Sonia Singh said.

“She (Gandhi) slapped me without citing any reason,” Verma said.

Govt planning to sell 5% stake in RCF next fiscal

The government is planning to divest at least 5 percent stake in state-run Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) in 2015-16, sources said.

“There are plans to divest at least 5 percent stake in the company (RCF) in the next fiscal, which could be raised to 10 percent,” a highly-placed source said.

The government at present owns 80 percent stake in the company, while remaining 20 percent is with the public and institutions. LIC holds 6.45 percent, the biggest stake by stakeholder other than other than promoters.

AP govt to provide houses at subsidised rate to SC/STs

Andhra Pradesh Government will provide houses to the poor and SC/STs in the state at subsidised rates, Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu said here on Thursday.

“The government is aiming to eradicate poverty in the state. We will provide houses to the poor and people belonging to the SC and ST categories for Rs 1-1.50 lakh soon,” Ramkrishnudu said at a function at AV Nagaram village in East Godavari district.

Top Hizbul Mujahideen commander killed in encounter

Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were on Thursday killed in an encounter in Avantipore district of Jammu and Kashmir.

While the security forces were closing in on the positions of the militants, they opened fired. The Indian troops retaliated strongly and killed two Hizbul Mujahideen militants one of whom was identified as a top commander of the militant outfit.

On September 30,2014, Indian security forces had gunned down and unidentified militant in Kupwara district.

RSS pats Modi government

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat Friday patted the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying in the past six months it “is moving in the right direction”.

In his customary Dussehra rally at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, Bhagwat said: “It is only six months but positive signs are already emanating.”

“It is moving in the right direction, but we will have to give them time… Nobody has a magic wand by which all problems of many years will disappear,” Bhagwat said.

A teenager has achieved the highest IQ score possible for someone under 18 and has made it to the network of the brainiest people from across the world, Mensa.

Paulius Zabotkiene, who is a student of Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, Worcs, scored a sensational 162 the IQ test, the Daily Star reported.

The 14-year-old genius’ score was two points higher than renowned geniuses Einstein and Professor Stephen Hawking.

Zabotkiene said that he was really surprised and very happy when he managed to achieve such a high score, as he wasn’t expecting it and is now over the moon.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said the possibility of taking legal action against former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen for allegedly violating confidentiality clauses in writing his autobiography, still exists.

The ECB, according to The Guardian, has yet to see a copy of Pietersen’s autobiography which is to be published next week, but has clarified that it retains the right to take action against for any breaches of confidentiality against the former player.

On the statement of the girl, police today registered a case against former councilor Harsimarpreet Singh Bajwa of the ward no 2 of Mandi Gobindgarh.

She alleged that she had relations with Bajwa from last 3 years and he used to rape her on the pretext of marriage but he married another girl.

She alleged that Bajwa was blackmailing her and even threatened to load her morphed pictures on the internet.
