RSS bats for Swadeshi, wants caste bias to end

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat Friday urged the government to go for Swadeshi by embracing “a new model of development” and also came out strongly against caste discrimination in Hindu society.

In his annual Dussehra speech to mark the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s founding day, Bhagwat patted Prime Minister Narendra Modi government saying it was “moving in the right direction” since taking office in May.

Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch at Rs.17,999 in India

Handset manufacturer Motorola’s smartwatch Moto 360, priced at Rs.17,999, will go on sale from Friday in India exclusively on e-commerce portal Flipkart.

The smartwatch will be available from mid-day Friday, a company statement said here.

With a round design that maximises the display area, the smartwatch has voice control that makes it easy to get things done and can helps to send texts, set a reminder, check the weather and even ask for directions.

It also has built-in pedometer to track steps and heart-rate monitor.

Manju’s Asiad hammer throw bronze upgraded to silver

Indian athlete Manju Bala’s Asian Games women’s hammer throw bronze, which she won Sep 28, was Friday upgraded to silver after China’s Zhang Wenxiu, who won the gold, was stripped of the medal following a failed dope test.

A sample taken from Zhang Sep 26 was found to contain the banned substances Zeranol and its metabolite. Zeranol is approved for use as a growth promoter in livestock, reports Xinhua.

People find Modi’s speech inspiring

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech Friday on the state-run All India Radio (AIR) was praised by many people with some describing it as “inspiring”.

Modi touched upon various issues in his 15-minute address – ‘Man ki baat’ – which he promised to do twice in a month on Sundays.

“His speech was really mesmerising and inspiring,” Aditya Jaiswal, an IT student tweeted.

“It was a small speech of only about 15 minutes aired on AIR but was a simple, crisp and clear message to rural Bharat,” Ranga Nathaathan, a blog writer tweeted.

UP pair cynosure of all eyes at Delhi goat market

As Muslims in the national capital gear up to celebrate Eid-Ul-Azha Monday, a pair of goats that have a natural pattern that reads like “Allah” and “786” on them have become the show stealers at old Delhi’s Jama Masjid bazar area.

Weighing around 20 kg each, one of the goats, named Tara, sports a natural design that reads like “Allah” on its neck while the other, named Noori, has “786” (considered an auspicious number) on its back.

The two-year-olds are around two feet in height and belong to the Barbari breed. Both have a price tag of Rs.1 lakh each.

RSS chief is above prime minister: CPI-M

Taking a strong stand against Doordarshan’s live telecast of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s address Friday, state CPI-M secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said that it clearly shows that Bhagwat is above the prime minister of the country.

“See, we have been telling about the vice-like grip that the RSS has been having over the BJP. But you people did not understand and look today the address on Doordarshan by the RSS chief has cleared all doubts and this shows that the RSS chief is above the prime minister,” Vijayan told reporters here.

Common painkiller may treat ageing lungs

Researchers have found that ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller, could reduce lung inflammation associated with ageing.

Immune cells from old mouse lungs fought tuberculosis bacteria as effectively as cells from young mice after lung inflammation was reduced by ibuprofen, the findings showed.

The drug had no effect on the immune response to TB in young mice.

India’s domestic air passenger demand up 7.4 percent

Travel industry body International Air Transport Association (IATA) Friday said India’s domestic market increased by 7.4 percent in August over the previous year.

“Results for the last two months have been solid, perhaps an early sign of improvement as a result of the new business-supportive government regime,” IATA said in a statement.

According to IATA, India’s domestic demand rose 4.5 percent in the month under review compared to August 2013.

Turkey pledges to defend Syrian Kurdish city from IS

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu vowed Friday that his country would do all it could to ensure that the Syrian border town of Kobani does not fall to the besieging forces of the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical group.

“We don’t want Kobani to fall,” he said in an interview with CNN Turk television.

“We have opened our arms to the brothers who come from there (and) and it is up to us to see that Kobani does not fall,” Davutoglu said.

The IS militants are just several hundred metres from the Syrian Kurdish city which is being defended by Kurdish irregulars.

Alcohol intake linked to poorer sperm quality

Even moderate weekly alcohol intake may be linked to poorer sperm quality in healthy young men, a new study has claimed.

The effects are apparent after more than five units, but impact worsens with increasing weekly tally, researchers said.

They base their findings on 1,221 Danish men between the ages of 18 and 28, all of whom underwent a medical examination to assess their fitness for military service between 2008 and 2012.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for construction of 396 houses at IDH and four adjacent colonies at Bhoiguda in Secunderabad on Friday, the Chief Minister announced that people living in slums would be given 2-Bed Room flats. He said Sanathnagar MLA Talasani Srinivas yadav briefed him about the dilapidated conditions of the houses in IDH colony and therefore, a decision was taken to demolish the existing structures and begin construction of new houses on war footing basis.

Keema Cutlet

Ingredients

1. 1 kg Mutton keema
2. 300 gm Mustard oil
3. 5 Bread slices
4. 4 tsp Arrowroot
5. 2 eggs
6. 100 gm Biscuit powder
7. 2 tsp Ginger paste
8. 2 Large onions
9. 10 cloves Garlic
10. 5 Green chilly
11. 2 bundles Coriander leaf
12. Salt to taste

Method:

1. Mix arrowroot with water to get a thin batter. Keep aside.
2. Finely slice the onions, green chilli, garlic and coriander. Add ginger paste.
3. Mix all of these with the keema, and leave it for about 10 minutes.

1tsp ginger-garlic paste
2 cups thinly sliced onions
2tbsp chopped hara dhania (coriander)
2tbsp chopped raw papaya
1/4 cup bhuna chana, powdered (roasted black chickpeas)
1/4 tsp kali mirch (black pepper)
1 moti elaichi (black cardamom)
1tsp jeera (cumin)
1/8 tsp powdered dalchini (cinnamon)
1 blade javitri (mace)
1/4 tsp grated jaiphal (nutmeg)
1 egg
2tsp salt
Chopped green chillies to taste
1/2 cup ghee
4 laung (cloves)

Method:

1. Heat 1/2 cup ghee. Fry the onions till brown and crisp. Keep aside.

Commercial bank credit growth remains sluggish at 9.7 per cent

Credit growth of commercial banks continued to remain weak with a growth of just 9.7 per cent at Rs 61,46,526 crore for the fortnight to September 19, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data.

Bank credit was Rs 56,02,021 crore in the corresponding period last year.

This was for the second consecutive fortnight that the credit growth came at sub-10 per cent.

Bankers have expressed concerns over sluggish credit demand and appear reluctant to cut lending rates.

E-Visa may make Visa-on-arrival redundant: Tourism Minister

Union Tourism Ministry said that the visa-on-arrival facility, which is being mulled for large number of countries might become redundant once e-visa facility is introduced.

“Visa on arrival (VoA) for six airports would be extended within a month. But moreover we are working for e-visa facility which will help tourists to get their travel document by applying online. Once e-visa facility is introduced, VoA is likely to become redundant,” Union Tourism Minister Sripad Naik, said on Friday.

Mutual Funds buy shares worth over Rs 4,000 crore in September

Improved market sentiment helped mutual funds pick up shares worth more than Rs 4,000 crore in September, making it the fifth consecutive monthly inflow.

Besides, they pumped in a staggering over Rs 23,000 crore in the debt market during the period.

The inflow in equities during the month followed net investment of close to Rs 6,000 crore in August, Rs 5,000 crore in July, Rs 3,340 crore in June and Rs 105 crore in May.
