A HIV born baby, who had appeared to have been cured of the virus following an antiretroviral treatment (ART), has been detected of HIV infection again.

The case report is the second report of apparent viral remission by rebound in a baby given early ART treatment, after the case of the ‘Mississippi baby’ received widespread attention in 2013-14.

Ebola virus may mutate to become airborne: UN

The United Nations (U.N.) has warned that the Ebola virus may mutate to become airborne if the authorities fail to control the outbreak soon.

Anthony Banbury, the Secretary General’s Special Representative, said that the situation may be a nightmare but it cannot be ruled out. He said that the longer the virus has to mutate, the greater the chance it may become airborne, reported Metro-co.uk.

Kuyt quits as Dutch international

Dutch international Dirk Kuyt ended his international career Friday to fully focus on his Turkish club Fenerbahce.

“I am a player who always wants to give 100 percent but looking at my limited prospect of playing time I am no longer able and willing to do that,” the 34-year-old said, reports Xinhua.

Just after the Brazil World Cup Kuyt had decided to continue as an international but he changed his mind.

“It would have been too easy to quit immediately after a successful World Cup. I felt so fit,” he said.

BSF takes up cleanliness campaign as part of “Swachh Bharat Mission”

The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel took up cleanliness campaign along the de-facto border in Jammu and Kashmir’s RS Pura sector as part of “Swachh Bharat Mission” launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the country.

As part of the mission, the BSF personnel swept areas along the border.

“The Border Security Force personnel are cleaning the area along the border as part of the cleanliness drive that started in the country,” said Sunil Kumar, a BSF soldier.

Pakistani troops again breach LoC truce

The Pakistani Army Friday again broke the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC), opening unprovoked firing at Indian positions in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence officer said. No casualty was reported.

“The Pakistani Army resorted to unprovoked firing at our positions in Saujian area of the LoC in Poonch district at 2 p.m. using small arms and automatic weapons,” defence spokesman Col. Manish Mehta told IANS here.

Multiple investigating agencies probing Bengal explosion

Multiple investigating agencies Friday collected samples from a house in a West Bengal district where two suspected militants were killed and another was injured in an explosion.

The explosion occurred Thursday at a house in Khagragarh in Burdwan district and police suspect the victims were associated with a militant outfit.

Besides some explosives, police have recovered several tools, including watch dials, required to make improvised explosive devices (IED).

SEBI fines 17 for violating takeover regulations

The Securities and Exchange Board of India has imposed a fine of Rs.20 lakh on 17 entities for violation of its takeover regulations while acquiring shares in Ahlcon Parenterals (India) Ltd.

The penalty is levied jointly and severely on the 14 individual and three companies who are acquirers and persons acting in concert (PAC) and has to be paid within 45 days from the date of the order, that is, Oct 1.

Dalai Lama in informal talks with China over possible return to Tibet

The Dalai Lama has hinted that he is in informal talks with China over his possible return to Tibet after more than half a century in exile.

The Washington Post reports that the Dalai Lama, 79, sat down for an interview in his temple in the north Indian town of Dharmsala before a celebration of the 25th anniversary of his Nobel Peace Prize, after a month of media speculation of a thaw between the exiled leader and the Chinese government.

The Dalai Lama also praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying that he was a more “realistic” and “open-minded” leader than his predecessors.

What brand of car you drive may influence the car choices of your kids too, says a study.

Children are 39 percent more likely to buy a particular brand of automobile if their parents bought that brand, the findings showed.

“In theory, these findings could change the way automakers price and market their cars,” said study co-author Soren Anderson from Michigan State University in the US.

If young buyers approach dealers with prior loyalty to a brand, thanks to their parents, manufacturers might consider upping prices of entry-level vehicles.

Peschke-Srebotnik sixth pair to qualify for WTA Finals

Czech-Slovenian pair of Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik became the sixth doubles team Friday to qualify for the season-ending Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals to be held here Oct 17-26.

Peschke, currently ranked 10th, and ninth-ranked Srebotnik have won 10 titles – including the 2011 Wimbledon – from 71 tournaments they played as a team since first pairing up in 2006.

Peschke will be making her fifth appearance while Srebotnik will be making her eighth in the WTA Finals. They have twice, as partners, advanced to the final in 2010 and 2011.

Former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will campaign for Om Prakash Chautala’s Indian National Lok Dal in the Haryana assembly elections, a party leader said Friday.

The senior Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader will address 10 election rallies across Haryana Oct 11-12, said party national spokesperson K.C. Tyagi. Elections to the 90-member state assembly will be held Oct 15.

“Nitish Kumar along with former prime minister and JD-S (Janata Dal-Secular) leader Deve Gowda will address election rallies in support of INLD candidates,” Tyagi told IANS over telephone.

Kullu Dussehra, a centuries-old festival, begins on ‘Vijaya Dashami’, the day when the festivities end in the rest of the country.

“More than 200 deities have arrived and more are expected in the next few days,” Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kanwar, the chief organiser of the festival, told IANS.

India’s forex falls by $1.41 bn

India’s foreign exchange reserves fell by $1.41 billion to $314.18 billion for the week ended Sep 26, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed.

The reserves had decreased by $101.3 million to $315.59 billion for the week ended Sep 19.

According to the RBI’s weekly statistical supplement, foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex reserves, plunged by $1.39 billion at $287.39 billion in the week under review.

The foreign currency assets had decreased by $18.5 million at $288.78 billion in the previous week.

Govt slammed over live telecast of RSS chief’s address

The live telecast of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s address in Nagpur by Doordarshan today stoked a controversy with opposition slamming the government for “misusing” the state broadcaster while BJP defended it.

Congress spokesman Sandeep Dikshit termed the hour-long telecast as a “dangerous tradition”, saying RSS is a controversial religious and political organisation.

“It is a dangerous tradition. This is not an organisation which is completely neutral. It is a controversial organisation,” he said, adding it is a political decision of the government.
