Tendulkar: Identify talent at young age

Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has rued the absence of a system to identify and nurture talent early in India, saying they are spotted only in their later years, by which time it was too late for them to compete in international level.

“I feel in many countries, talents are identified at a young age. That is what we lack in India. When we identify talents, they are in teens. That is too late for competing in international matches,” he said during a brief interaction with reporters here soon after launching ISL franchise Kerala Blasters’ team anthem and jersey.

‘You reap what you sow’: Shakti Kapoor on Jayalalithaa

“You reap what you sow”, Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor said about the conviction of Jayalalithaa, who has been awarded four-year jail term in a disproportionate assets case.

“Jo jaisa boyega, vaisa katega (You reap what you sow). And it is the media power that exposes every bad work in the society,” said Kapoor when asked about Jayalalithaa.

“Jaya becomes ‘Jail Lalitha'”, Kapoor added.

The actor was here to promote an upcoming health and wellness mall.

“I am not pinpointing anybody. But ‘jo jaisa boyega, vaisa katega…jaisee karni, vaisee bharni’,” he said.

Modi keeps away from exquisite food at dinner with Obama

A spread comprising of compressed avacados, crisped halibut, safron Basmati rice and salmon were part of the menu for dinner that US President Barack Obama hosted for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had only warm water due to his fast.

Though there was a plate put in front of the Prime Minister as per the protocol, he only had warm water and asked rest of the guest not to feel embarrassed and continue with their normal dinner, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

The dinner was attended by limited number of guests from each side.

Jayalalithaa’s bail plea adjourned to Oct 6

The criminal revision petition of jailed former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa for suspension of her sentence and bail was Tuesday adjourned to Oct 6 by the judge of a vacation bench of the Karnataka High Court here.

After admitting the revision petition, Justice Rathnakala posted the bail plea to Oct 6 by a regular bench of the high court when it resumes after a week-long Dusshera holidays.

A special court here Saturday convicted Jayalalithaa in the Rs.66-crore disproportionate assets case and sentenced her to four years’ simple imprisonment with a fine of Rs.100 crore.

Sensex up 90 points as RBI holds key rates

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 90 points late morning trade on Tuesday after the Reserve Bank kept key interest rate unchanged in its bi-monthly monetary policy.

This is the fourth consecutive time that the RBI has kept key interest rates unchanged despite clamours from the industry to cut rates to boost economy.

After commencing 30 points lower, the 30-share index was up 90.07 points, or 0.34 per cent, to trade at 26,687.18 at 1145 hrs.

Man held with gold
(Siasat News): The custom officials at RGI airport, Shamshabad arrested a passenger and seized 2.3 kgs gold from his possession.

As per the details, the passenger Abdullah Badruddin from Kerala had come from Dubai this morning. During the custom checking, the officials found the gold from his mobile pouch comprising 20 gold biscuits weighing 2.3 kgs.

He was taken into police custody and further investigations are on.

25 Indian fishermen arrested in Pakistan

Pakistan has arrested 25 Indian fisherman for violating the territorial waters of the country, its maritime security agency said today.

The Indian fishermen were arrested and their boats seized early yesterday morning. “We are preparing documents to produce all of them in court,” police official Mohammad Anwer told AFP.

Indian and Pakistani fishermen are frequently detained on the charge, as the two countries’ borders are not clearly defined in the Arabian Sea.

10 new polio cases in Pakistan

Ten new polio cases have been reported in Pakistan, raising the total number of such cases to 184.

The health department officials have said the cases were registered from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Karachi, Geo TV reported Tuesday.

According to officials, the count of polio cases is increasing every year.

Fifty-eight cases were reported in 2012 and 93 in 2013.

Pakistan stands at the top of the last three polio endemic countries in the world – the other two being Nigeria and Afghanistan.

Firing a salvo at his estranged ally Prithviraj Chavan, NCP President Sharad Pawar has criticised the former Congress Chief Minister for not having a “coalition mindset” and accused him of indulging in “diversionary tactics”.

Stepping up his attack on the Congress, Pawar said, “The previous Congress chief ministers who led the alliance namely Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Ashok Chavan displayed the coalition mindset to run the government. But Prithviraj Chavan seemed to have a different mindset that queered the pitch.”

Minority welfare Department has begun finalizing guidelines to ensure effective implementation of ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ _ financial assistance of Rs. 51000 offered by Telangana government for the marriage of poor minority girls. Issuing GO MS 4 on September 25, the government also issued rules regarding the eligibility and implementation procedure. Under the scheme, a onetime financial assistance of Rs. 51000/- at the time of marriage shall be granted to every unmarried girl belonging to minority community with effect from October, 2, 2014. The amount will be deposited in the girl’s account.

Karnataka HC admits Jayalalithaa’s bail petition

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Chief J. Jayalalithaa’s petition to the Karnataka High Court challenging her conviction in the disproportionate assets case, seeking immediate release on bail, has been admitted by the court here today.

The next hearing has been scheduled on 6th of October, which means that the former Tamil Nadu chief minister will have to stay in jail till the hearing place.

Earlier today the supporters of ‘Amma’ staged a silent protest, which also saw famous Tamil film stars in attendance. (ANI)

Maoists kill tribal in Odisha

Maoist guerrillas killed a tribal man in Odisha by slitting his throat after accusing him of being a police informer, an official said on Tuesday.

The murder took place late Monday in Padia area of the Malkangiri district, over 700 km from here, Inspector General of Police Yashwant Jethwa told a news agency.

Two armed rebels dragged Munna Madhi, 21, a tribal from his home at Irbanpali village and killed him by slitting his throat with a sharp weapon, Jethwa said.

Maoists are active in over half of the state’s 30 districts and the district is their strongholds.

Vadodara riots: Over 200 held, situation remains tense

More than 200 people have been arrested in Vadodara town in Gujarat after days of communal violence, police said on Monday.

Although no fresh incident has been reported, the situation in the city, 116 km from Ahmedabad, remained tense amid huge deployment of police personnel.

Communal violence had erupted in Yakutpura, Panjrapole, Fatehpura and Kumbharvada in the city on Thursday after some posts about a religion, purportedly derogatory in nature, were put up on a social networking site.

CBI arrests person with fake currency

CBI has arrested another fake currency racketeer for allegedly possessing fake currency notes having face value of Rs 4.98 lakh.

“CBI intercepted one person at Malda Railway Station (West Bengal) and recovered FICNs having face value of Rs 4.98 lakh (approximately) from his possession,” a CBI spokesperson said here today.

She said the fake currency was in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.

“It is alleged that the intercepted person was coming from Muzaffarpur for delivery of seized FICNs to some unknown person at Malda,” she said.
