Indian men paddlers advanced to the doubles pre-quarterfinals after winning their respective matches of the 17th Asian Games at the Suwon Gymnasium here Tuesday.

First up, the pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj dropped the first game before winning 3-1 (6-11, 11-5, 11-8, 12-10) over the Nepalese duo of Purshottam Bajracharya and Amarlal Malla in 20 minutes.

In their next match Wednesday, Sharath-Amalraj will play Japan’s Koki Niwa and Kenta Matsudaira, who beat Saudi Arabian combine M. Ali Noor Alkhadrawi and A. Saeed Akram Alghamdi 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-7).

Sachin Tendulkar launched the anthem and jersey of his co-owned football team Kerala Blaster, for upcoming India Super League (ISL), which is slated to kick-off next month.

The ISL was officially launched in Mumbai, on August 28, by billionaire, in which eight franchises will take part.

The Karnataka High Court will hear Wednesday the criminal review petition of jailed former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa for suspension of sentence and bail.

The court registrar has posted the revision petition before the special bench Wednesday on the directive of the state chief justice after the state government declared holiday Oct 6 for the Eid-ul-Azha festival, the date on which the case hearing was adjourned to by the vacation bench earlier in the day.

TN cop’s self-immolation bid foiled

Apparently upset over the conviction of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa in an illegal asstes case, a police constable today allegedly attempted self-immolation here, police said.

Velmurugan, attached to a police station in Theni District, tried to douse himself with kerosene after raising some slogans in support of Jayalalithaa near the state police headquarters but was overpowered and taken for inquiry, police said.

Jayalalithaa was convicted and sentenced to four years’ prison term in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case by a Bangalore special court on September 27.

Israeli settlers seize houses in east Jerusalem

Dozens of Jewish settlers, escorted by heavy police force, took over at least seven empty buildings in the Palestinian neighbourhood of Silwan in east Jerusalem Tuesday.

The buildings are located in the Wadi Hilweh neighbourhood of Silwan, only some 300 metres across from the volatile area of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound and the Jewish Western Wall, Xinhua reported.

A few Palestinian youths hurled stones at the force.

One of them attempted to enter one of the seized buildings, but failed.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly committing a triple murder three years ago with the help of his four associates, police said Tuesday.

Jaswant Dagar was arrested Sunday from Najafgarh in west Delhi on a tip-off.

Jaswant, along with his associates, had killed three people – Sudhir, Kuldeep and Amit – all resident of Sonepat in Haryana, over business rivalry.

Waqar not happy with timing of ICC crackdown on bowling action

Pakistan cricket team’s head coach Waqar Younis is not happy with the crackdown on bowling actions being carried out by ICC, saying this will affect preparations of teams for the World Cup.

“This crackdown is going to affect the preparations of teams for the World Cup especially those teams whose bowlers are being reported,” Waqar told PTI today from Lahore.

“I am not sure about the timing of these new laws being enforced by the ICC. The new protocols and technology to test bowling actions could have been done after the World Cup,” he said.

India lose in Asiad women’s volleyball

The Indian women’s volleyball team lost their 5th-8th position playoff contest to Kazakhstan in the 17th Asian Games at the Ansan Sangroksu Gymnasium here Tuesday.

India lost 0-3 in an hour and nine minutes, bowing out 20-25, 19-25, 20-25. Indian blocker Raju Tiji was the match’s joint best scorer along with Yelena Gordeyeva with 11 points but that was not enough to secure a win.

They will play Hong Kong in the 7th-8th place classification match Thursday. Hong Kong lost 0-3 (18-25, 14-25, 9-25) to Chinese Taipei in an hour and two minutes earlier in the day.

In response to Naidu’s call, the AAP chief said that while his party workers were already involved in cleanliness activities, “we cannot make India clean by such actions.”

Vaccine for cervical cancer to cost about Rs 100: Kalam

Work is on to develop a vaccine to contain prevalence of cervical cancer among women, especially in rural and tribal areas, former President APJ Abdul Kalam said today.

“The vaccine will cost around Rs 100,” he said at a conference organised here by the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH).

Kalam said effective immunisation could go a long way in containing cancer.

He said vaccines were being developed for communicable diseases.

The former President said scientists world over have developed vaccines to prevent malaria and TB.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will connect with the people through national broadcaster All India Radio on Oct 3.

The speech, which will be exclusive to AIR, will also be telecast on all news channels of Doordarshan, AIR Director General (News) Archana Dutta told IANS.

The speech will begin at 11 a.m.

Modi had announced in the beginning of September on the website mygov.in that he will be sharing his ideas through radio, and also said in a tweet that he has received many ideas and suggestions for it.

Chopper deal: Khaitan remanded to five days ED custody

Businessman Gautam Khaitan, arrested for graft in the AgustaWestland chopper deal, was remanded to five days custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by a court here Tuesday after it was told that he needs to be confronted with documents received from Italy.

Reliance Communications to reduce debt to under Rs.20,000 crore

Reliance Communications targets to bring its debt to under Rs.20,000 crore in the next 24 months, its chairman Anil Ambani told shareholders at the annual general meeting here Tuesday.

The company had a debt of Rs.35,500 crore as of Aug 14.

Ambani also said the company would participate in the spectrum auctions due next year to be able to launch 4G (fourth generation) telecommunications services in the country.

Reliance Communications shares closed Rs.98.90 per share, down 0.80 percent in the Bombay Stock Exchange at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
