Diesel under-recovery decreased to Rs 0.08 per litre for fortnight commencing Sept. 1

Diesel under-recovery has been decreased to Rs. 0.08 per litre for a fortnight commencing from today. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), effective September 1, are now incurring a combined daily under-recovery of about Rs 195 crore on the sale of diesel, PDS kerosene and domestic LPG. This is lower than the Rs.230 crore daily under-recoveries during the previous fortnight. The under-recoveries for the financial year 2014-15 are projected to be Rs.91,665 crore, while the figure was Rs.1, 39,869 crores in 2013-14.

Bihar’s ancient Nalanda University re-starts today

The ancient Nalanda University located in Rajgir city of Bihar’s Nalanda district will start again today as classes are scheduled to begin in its newly established campus. The event will also mark the completion of former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s proposed idea which he had come up with in 2006. According to Gopa Sabharwal, Vice-Chancellor, Nalanda University, the university will witness a low key launch with classes for the School of Ecology and Environmental Studies and the School of Historical Studies beginning today.

Bihar’s flood-hit loot food grain from warehouse

Flood victims in Bihar’s Nalanda district broke into a government warehouse and looted food grain Monday to protest inadequate assistance given to them by the government, officials said.

“Hundreds of flood victims forcibly broke open the lock of a godown (warehouse) of the state disaster management department at Sarmera block office in Nalanda in the presence of the police and looted rice and wheat,” district official Sunil Kumar said.

He said the food grain looted from the godown were meant for relief distribution among flood victims.

President in Jammu on two-day visit

President Pranab Mukherjee Monday arrived here on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, members of the state cabinet, and senior civil and military officials received the president at the Jammu airport.

From the airport, the president drove to Jammu University, where he is the chief guest at its 14th convocation.

Vohra, who is the chancellor of the university, is presiding over the convocation while Omar Abdullah, as the pro-vice chancellor, is the guest of honour.

One killed during Ghaziabad dacoity

Dacoits have killed a woman and looted cash and valuables worth Rs.50,000 from a house here, police said Monday.

Four people were also injured in the heist that took place in the city’s Nistauli area Sunday night.

Police said five to six dacoits barged into the house of 48-year-old Muninder, a widow, and started hitting all other members of the family by iron rods.

Muninder’s eldest daughter Anjali, 23, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.

Congress launches campaign for Maharashtra polls, attacks Centre

Launching its election campaign for the Maharashtra assembly polls, the Congress Monday attacked the NDA central government on various issues including denying power to the state and having a secret agenda to divide it.

After lighting the election flame, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan accused the central dispensation of deliberately denying power to the state from the central electricity grids.

He said he had already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a meeting of all chief ministers to discuss the power scenario.

The BJP is holding discussions with its allies in Tamil Nadu on contesting the Sep 19 local body polls, the party said Monday.

In a statement issued here, Bharatiya Janata Party’s state unit leader Tamilisai Soundararajan said her party is in talks with all the parties in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to contest the local body elections.

The party is also in the process of selecting its candidates for the polls, she added.

The BJP contested the Lok Sabha elections joining hands with the DMDK, MDMK, PMK and others.

A campaign to train police officers in traffic management to improve road safety and enforcement against drunken driving was launched here Monday.

The ‘Road to Safety’ programme, initiated by Diageo India Foundation and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) was launched by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The programme will cover 30 cities across the country.

One held for killing Gurgaon ATM guard

A man was arrested Monday for killing a private security guard deployed at an ATM booth here when he tried to stop robbers from looting the booth, police said.

Ravi Kumar, a 23-year-old unemployed youth from Daultabad village, was arrested for killing the guard and critically injuring another, a police officer said.

The incident took place in Daultabad Saturday.

Bhupender Kumar, who hails from Bihar’s Oriya district, died while he was being taken to a hospital. The other guard, Ramprasad, was critically injured.

Policeman booked in Punjab for offender’s abduction

A senior Punjab Police officer and three other people have been booked on charges of abducting a proclaimed offender from a police station, officials said Monday.

Inspector General Gautam Cheema, posted in the information technology and telecommunications wing, was booked along with three others, including a woman, for allegedly abducting proclaimed offender Sumedh Gulati last week from a police station in Mohali, 10 km from here.

No one has been arrested so far.

Four killed in Assam pipeline blast

Four people were killed and six others injured in an explosion Monday in a pipeline of the Assam Gas Company in Sivasagar district, police said.

The explosion took place in the pipeline near the Singrijan tea estate in Moranhat around 3.30 a.m.

Following the blast, the blaze in the pipeline spread to some areas of the tea estate, killing 35-year-old Jyoti Sabar.

Nine other people were injured, of whom three – Michel Tapno (30), Paras Sarma (28) and Bhasan Sarma (35) – later died in a hospital, police said.

Uttarakhand shootout: HC notice to CBI on convicts’ pleas

The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to the CBI on the appeals of 13 personnel of Uttarakhand Police, who challenged the trial court’s verdict sentencing them to life imprisonment for killing a 22-year-old MBA student in a staged shootout in Dehradun in 2009.

A division bench of Justice S. Ravindra Bhat and Justice Vipin Sanghi also sought the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) response to the bail pleas of the convicts.

The trial court June 9 awarded life imprisonment to 17 of the 18 police officials for the staged shooting of Ranbir Singh and for destroying evidence.

Libya’s newly-elected parliament Monday asked Abdullah al-Thinni to form a new government, a lawmaker said.

In its meeting held in the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk, the secularist-dominated House of Representatives appointed al-Thinni as the new prime minister, Xinhua reported citing the unnamed lawmaker.

Al-Thinni had been approved by the ex-parliament as the prime minister of the North African country since March. He and his government resigned last week to pave the way for fresh prime ministerial elections in the new parliament.

Sridevi’s Bollywood comeback vehicle “English Vinglish” has registered a box office collection of $1 million in Japan. The veteran actress is elated.

The movie, backed by Eros International, continues to perform well at the box office after hitting theatres in Japan June 28.
