Woman lodges complaint of attempt to rape

A 25-year-old tribal woman today lodged a police complaint alleging that two men from the same community tried to rape her at Bidaypur village in Birbhum district.

The woman lodged the complaint with the Dubrajpur police station this evening.

Police said that the woman alleged the two men from the same community tried to rape her following some petty dispute and when she resisted she was assaulted by them.

The woman has been sent to Suri Hospital for medical test and treatment, the police added.

HRD Ministry to equip Govt schools with latest ICT services

HRD Ministry is working to boost the standing of government schools by making them equipped with latest information communication and technology (ICT) services through which parents will receive messages on their mobile phone about the attendance, homework and academic performance of their wards.

“This will be for the first time in history that anything of this sort will happen. It will make parents much more involved with the studies of their students. We will be doing geographic information system (GIS) of all government schools for this,” HRD Minister Smriti Irani told reporters today.

Obama notifies Congress of airstrikes in Iraq

US President Barack Obama today notified the Congress about his authorisation for conducting targeted airstrikes and humanitarian assistance to help Iraqis threatened by Islamic State (IS) militants.

In his notification to the Congress, Obama said on August 28, he “authorised US Armed Forces to conduct targeted airstrikes in support of an operation to deliver humanitarian assistance to civilians in the town of Amirli, Iraq, which is surrounded and besieged by ISIL.”

2 militants killed, 1 injured in army raids in Egypt

Two militants were killed while one other injured during a military raid in the restive Sinai province of Egypt, a military source has said.

Armed forces also destroyed two cars used by the militants

During the raid yesterday, the source said.

The three militants were hiding in a farm that belongs to an Ansar Beit el-Maqeds (Jerusalem supporters) leader, who was accused of shooting down a military helicopter and killing its five soldiers crew eight months ago, the source said.

Saudi court upholds 10-year term for rights activist

A Saudi court on today upheld a 10-year jail sentence and 1,000 lashes against Raef Badawi, founder of a liberal human rights group, for insulting Islam, an activist said.

He had been convicted of “creating a website insulting Islam” and criticising the role of the notorious religious police “which we all do” in Saudi Arabia, the rights group’s co-founder, Suad al-Shamari, told AFP.

Badawi, founder of the Saudi Liberal Network, has been behind bars since June 2012.

The court had also ordered him to pay a fine of one million riyals USD 266,666.

New anti-terror measures to be introduced in Britain: Cameron

British Prime Minister David Cameron Monday said his country will introduce a slew of measures to prevent terror suspects from travelling abroad, imposing tougher constraints on suspected extremists in the country.

Embattled Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said he will neither resign nor go on leave, even as anti-government protesters led by Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri continue to mount pressure on him to step down.

Addressing a meeting of leaders of political parties here, Nawaz said he would not allow to set a precedent under which a few people make hostage mandate of millions of people.

“We have rule of Constitution here and we will not allow any one to abrogate it,” Express News quoted Nawaz as saying.

Pipe bomb case: 5 detained under NSA

The District Administration today ordered detention of five members of the banned outfit Tamil Nadu Liberation Army under National Security Act.

The five were involved in planting pipe bombs near Reliance Market at Uthangudi here and near the houses of former Union Ministers V Narayanasamy at Puducherry and P Chidambaram at Sivaganga few months back, a release from the DSP Q-Branch Police T Prabhakaran said.

They also allegedly printed pamphlets that instigated people against India.

Modi focuses on women’s empowerment, education

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday stressed on the need for women’s empowerment in the present-day world as he began the fourth day of his visit to Japan.

Modi, who was addressing students of the Sacred Hearts University here, said he has always given a lot of importance to girl child education.

“As a Gujarat chief minister, I dedicated myself to help educate the girl child in the state,” Modi stated in a message posted on the PMO twitter account.

The Indian prime minister added that he spent $180 million for girl child education.

Rahul Gandhi to visit Amethi

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will visit his parliamentary constituency Amethi for two days beginning Thursday.

Gandhi will meet villagers in the Uttar Pradesh constituency and interact with Congress workers at the Munshiganj guest house where he will stay, party sources said Tuesday.

Youth arrested by police for raping a two-year-old girl

A youth, who had allegedly raped a two-year-old girl a fortnight ago, was arrested today .

25-year-old Devendra Pardi was arrested for allegedly raping the child under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abid Khan told reporters.

The accused had allegedly raped the minor on August 14 after abducting her in an inebriated condition, when he did not find a woman with whom he had illicit relations, the police said, adding that further investigations are on.

Nigeria to get Japanese drug for Ebola treatment

Nigeria will soon get a Japanese drug to treat Ebola, the country’s Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said Monday.

The drug named Favipiravir and developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm Holdings in Japan, could be delivered any time soon in Nigeria, Xinhua quoted Chukwu as telling reporters here.

Apart from the Japanese drug, the west African country had also applied for another anti-Ebola drug alongside two other vaccines which have been positively identified by the local Treatment Research Group (TRG) in Nigeria.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley admitted to hospital

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was admitted to a hospital in capital here Monday.

Sources said that he was admitted to Max Super Speciality Hospital in Saket in the evening and he will undergo some minor surgery.

The nature of the surgery is not known yet.

Three executed in Yemen for having US links

Three people have been executed by militants in Yemen Monday for having links with the United States, a military source said.

“Suspected Yemen-based Al Qaida operatives kidnapped three local residents and then executed them all by firing a barrage of bullets on them in Qattan region of Hadramout province,” Xinhua quoted the military source as saying.

The three men were killed because they provided the whereabouts of the Islamic Jihadi fighters to the American enemy, local media said.

UN chief alarmed by Israeli claim on West Bank land

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Monday expressed alarm at the Israeli declaration of a 400 hectares area in the West bank as “state land”.

“The secretary-general is alarmed by yesterday’s announcement by Israeli authorities to declare as so-called ‘state land’ nearly 1,000 acres of land in the Bethlehem area of the West Bank,” Xinhua quoted a statement by Ban’s spokesperson as saying.

The UN chief called on Israel to heed the calls of the international community to refrain from settlement activity and abide by its commitments under international law and the Quartet Road Map.

US continues air strikes against IS in Iraq

US forces continued their attack on Islamic State (IS) militants in northern Iraq with three more air strikes conducted Monday, the army said.

The strikes destroyed three IS trucks and destroyed a mortar position near the Mosul Dam, Xinhua quoted a statement by US Army’s Central Command as saying.

The operation was conducted under authority to protect US personnel and facilities, support humanitarian efforts, and support Iraqi forces that are acting in furtherance of these objectives, the statement said.

US Central Command has conducted a total of 123 airstrikes across Iraq.

Ebola: Six ‘high risk’ passengers quarantined at Delhi airport

Six people deemed “high risk” Ebola suspects were today admitted to a quarantine facility at Delhi airport, health ministry said on Monday.

The suspects were among 181 passengers who arrived in India from the affected western African countries.

As of today, the ministry said, as many as 816 passengers were being tracked by authorities under Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.
