No improvement in Jaswant Singh’s condition

There has been no improvement in the health of former union minister and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh and he continues to remain in coma, a doctor at a Delhi hospital said Tuesday.

It is the 26th day of Singh’s hospitalisation.

“Jaswant Singh’s condition is still the same and continues to remain in coma. He is under close scrutiny of a team of doctors,” a senior doctor from the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) told IANS here.

The team of doctors consisting of neurosurgeons and critical care specialists are making all efforts to revive Singh.

The property of eight persons, who were wanted in connection with the riots in the district, has been attached by the police on the orders of a court here.

The property of eight accused Anuj, Devender, Puppu, Nilu, Prashant, Vinod Kumar, Bablu and Amit Kumar, who were declared absconding by the court, has been attached, Dy SP, SP Singh said today.

The accused are absconding since their involvement in the riots case at Kutba village in the district came to light last year.

24-year-old techie commits suicide in Indore

A 24-year-old woman software engineer, who was apparently suffering from depression, allegedly committed suicide at her house here, police said Tuesday.

Deepa Radariya, originally from Mumbai and working at a software firm here for the last six months, yesterday hanged herself at her apartment in Ahinsa tower on MG Road, Tukoganj police station in-charge Dilip Singh Choudhary said.

The woman used to live in the apartment along with her colleague Sneha, he said.

Deepa used to get depressed even over small issues, the police officer said quoting her friend.

Telangana to add 230-cr plants, boost tree cover by 8 percent

Telangana government has proposed to add 230 crore plants in the next three years under a flagship programme which envisages boosting of tree cover in the state by nearly eight per cent.

As part of the programme “Telangana Ku Haritha Haram”, 130 crore seedlings shall be planted outside forest areas (10 crore within Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority area and 120 crore in rest of the areas of the state).

Another 100 crore plants would be rejuvenated by intensive protection of the forests and from the existing root stock in the forest areas, according to the government.

Scientists have revealed a new way to use magnetic resonance relaxometry (MRR), a close cousin of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to detect a parasitic waste product in the blood of infected patients.

This technique developed by a research team from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) could offer a more reliable way to detect malaria.

Sugar substance cuts down ‘good’ HDL cholesterol from body

A new research has discovered that “good” High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol gets converted into “bad” cholesterol by a sugar-derived substance known as methylglyoxal – MG.

The study conducted by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) showed that MG was found to damage “good” HDL cholesterol, which removed excess levels of bad cholesterol from the body.

Lead researcher Dr Naila Rabbani, of the Warwick Medical School, says that MG damage to HDL was a new and likely important cause of low and dysfunctional HDL, and could count for up to a 10percent risk of heart disease.

A fire broke out in a shoe factory in Agra, an official said Tuesday. No casualty was reported.

The fire broke out Monday night on the third floor of the Bright Footwear company, the official said.

At least six fire-tenders managed to douse the fire that ravaged the factory in Hing ki Mandi market in Agra.

EU questions Facebook-WhatsApp $19 bn deal

In a bid to understand what separates a social network from a messaging application, European Union (EU) anti-trust officials have sent a detailed questionnaire to the competitors as well as customers of Facebook and WhatsApp.

The move is part of the EU’s formal review of the $19 billion acquisition of the popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp by the social network earlier this year, Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

The unusual 70-page questionnaire comes after Facebook and WhatsApp formally notified the EU antitrust body of the deal Aug 29.

NASA’s Mars rover, Moon probe get new lease of life

Two prestigious NASA probes on the verge of closure – the Mars Opportunity rover and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) – have been given a new lease of life.

Each has received a reprieve of two more years of operation, media reports said.

Till date, the Opportunity has travelled over 40 km across the surface of the Red Planet, exploring areas including the most ancient habitable environment known on the planet.

The rover is currently heading for a region called Marathon Valley where scientists think clay minerals formed in a watery environment.

Sensex, Nifty hit record highs Tuesday

benchmark index of Indian equities markets hit a record high of 26,952.88 points Tuesday, surpassing its previous peak of 26,900.30 points that was scaled Sep 1.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,888.21 points (10 a.m.), was trading at 26,931.40 points, up 63.85 points or 0.24 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,867.55 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 26,952.88 points and a low of 26,886.22 points in the early morning trade.

Apple iWatch won’t be on ‘sale’ from Sep 9, only announced

New reports suggest that Apple would announce the iWatch in September, but it won’t be on sale.

According to the Mashable, the smartwatch iWatch would be announced in September but it would not be available until sometime after the holidays, possibly early 2015.

Apple has considered charging 400 dollars for its wearable device, with lower prices for different models.

Actual availability of the iWatch is not yet revealed, but it’s likely that users will at least get a peek at Apple’s new wearable in just a few weeks. (ANI)

Pak army not backing Islamabad protests: ISPR

After a dissident Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader accused the Pakistani army of backing the ongoing protests in Islamabad, the army has strongly denied the claim.

Former PTI president, Javed Hashmi had alleged earlier that the anti-government protests led by PTI chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri were “scripted.” Although he did not reveal who the scriptwriter was but said that there was a feeling amid the party members that the army was supporting PTI, reported The Express Tribune.

China accuses British MPs of meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs

China has reportedly accused British MPs of meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs.

The Chinese Foreign Affairs Committee, in a strongly worded letter, accuses its UK counterpart of carrying out a “highly inappropriate act, which constitutes interference in China’s internal affairs”, the BBC reports.

The Committee wrote in the letter that UK has sent a wrong political signal to the outside world, and disrupted Hong Kong’s political reform.

Govt notifies new pension rules to check delays

In a step aimed at checking harassment of government employees in grant of pension, a head of office will now be responsible for any failure to ascertain non-qualifying service period and will undertake preparation of paper work one year before an employee is due to retire.

According to new pension rules notified by the government, retiring employees will not have to face any delay in determination of pension due to deficiency in application forms and authorities can go ahead with determining the amount of provisional pension and provisional retirement gratuity.

Blueberry and Vanilla Muffins

Ingredients:

270g plain flour
250ml buttermilk or sour cream
170g caster sugar
2 tsp baking powder
2 eggs
80mls vegetable or ground nut oil
150g blueberries
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180c (350f) (gas mark 4). Sift your flour, baking powder and sugar together in a bowl. Stir to mix.

2. Break the eggs into a mixing jug with the buttermilk, oil and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth. Along with the blueberries, stir into the dry ingredients until just combined.

3. Spoon mixture into cases.

Ingredients

1. 1kg mutton chops
2. 1 cup curd
3. 2tbsp ginger paste
4. 2tbsp garlic paste
5. 1tsp lal mirch powder (red chilli)
6. 1tsp dhaniya powder (coriander)
7. 1tsp garam masala powder
8. 4-5 elaichi (green cardamom)
9. 2-3 moti elaichi (black cardamom)
10. 2 tej patta (bay leaves)
11. 1/2 inch dalchini (cinnamon)
12. 4-5 laung (cloves)
13. 3-4 tbsp oil
14. 4-5 kali mirch (whole peppercorns)
15. Salt to taste

Method:

1. Wash and dry mutton. In a bowl, marinate the mutton with ginger paste, garlic paste and curd for half an hour.
