Don’t Sterilise Elephants, Supreme Court to West Bengal

The Supreme Court Tuesday took serious view of a report which said that the West Bengal government had decided to take “regressive” steps to reduce the elephant population by using contraceptives so that train accidents involving them are avoided.

Taking note, the apex court bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice J. Chelameshwar said: “If it is so, then it is absolutely impermissible and also condemnable.”

Hyderabad metro cost escalates by Rs.2,500 crore

Hyderabad Metro Rail project has escalated by Rs.2,500 crore to Rs.3,000 crore, said L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL).

LTMRHL chief executive and managing director V. B. Gadgil told reporters here Tuesday that the project is in a “very very critical mode”.

He said they have completed 28 percent of the project and were confident of overcoming all challenges.

The cost of the project at the time of signing of concessionaire agreement in 2010 was Rs.14,132 crore.

The LTMRHL is building 72-km elevated metro project in public private partnership.

NASA building traffic control system for drones

NASA is developing a drone traffic management programme that would work as a separate air traffic control system for drones flying low to the ground at 400 to 500 feet.

Unlike a normal air traffic control room, the drone traffic control will be fully automated, the New York Times reported.

The work on the traffic control system for drones is underway near Moffat Field in California.

11 killed in China landslides

At least 11 people were killed and 27 others were missing Tuesday after heavy rains caused landslides in China’s Chongqing province.

According to officials, about 898,000 people in 16 counties in the region have been affected and 39,000 have been evacuated from flooded areas, Xinhua reported.

The region has suffered direct economic losses of around 710 million yuan ($115 million), the officials added.

Rescue teams, including firefighters and police, have evacuated over 7,000 residents to safe locations.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley undergoes surgery

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday underwent a successful laparoscopic procedure at a hospital here.

“Arun Jaitley underwent a planned elective laparoscopic procedure for diabetes management under Pradeep K. Chowbey at the Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, today (Tuesday),” a statement from the hospital said.

“The procedure has been performed successfully,” it added.

Jaitley was admitted to the hospital Monday evening.

President prays at Vaishno Devi temple

President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday prayed at the Mata Vaishno Devi temple here.

The president signed the visitors’ book and waved to the other devotees.

Despite the president’s presence, no restrictions were placed on devotees proceeding to the shrine. Katra town is located about 50 km from Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Accompanying the president was Governor N.N. Vohra, chairman of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (MVDSB) that runs the shrine.

More than 10 million devotees visit the shrine every year.

Indian-born Researcher at Stanford Wins Prestigious Award

Himanshu Asnani, 27, an Indian-born mathematics researcher at Stanford University Electrical Engineering School in the US, is the winner of the Marconi Society Paul Baran young scholar award for 2014.

“The prestigious award will be presented to Asnani at our annual event Oct 2 at the National Academies of Sciences in Washington, DC,” Society’s young scholar selection committee Bob Tkach told IANS through email Tuesday.

Asnani, who hails from Kota in Rajasthan, is also a system engineer at the Swedish telecom major’s R&D centre in the Silicon Valley, off the US west coast.

NDA politicizing education: Congress

The Congress Tuesday accused the government of politicizing the educational system in the country and of trying to alter the federal system of governance.

“In schools, a different kind of history is being taught,” party leader Anand Sharma told the media here. “This is already happening in history books of Gujarat.

“Why is education being politicized? Institutions and research and science must remain out of politics,” he added.

Sharma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not consult the states before deciding to do away with the Planning Commission.

Pakistan Supreme Court issues notices to parties

The Supreme Court Tuesday issued notices summoning all parties after hearing a set of petitions against the sit-in protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) here.

The notices were issued after petitioner Zulfiqar Naqvi pleaded before the court that all parliamentary parties be summoned so the ongoing political deadlock can be resolved, Dawn online reported.

Sensex breaches 27,000-mark; Nifty at record high of 8,076.60

The benchmark BSE Sensex today hit the 27,000-mark for the first time while the NSE Nifty soared to yet another high of 8,076.60 in afternoon trade on strong inflows of foreign funds buoyed by encouraging GDP data for the April-June quarter and narrowing CAD.

It took 40 trading sessions from July 7 to September 2 to reach the psychological 27,000-level from 26,000.

India, Japan working as strategic partners: Modi

India and Japan are now working as “special strategic and global” partners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday.

“We are now working as special strategic and global partners,” Modi told business leaders at an event organised by the Japan-India Association.

He added that there was an unwritten spiritual connection between the two countries.

The prime minister, who is on a five-day visit to Japan, said there was growing interest among the Japanese to learn Hindi and yoga.

Congress leader Manish Tewari today said that the ‘Achche Din’ promised by the Bharatiya Janata Party before coming to power have not come for the people of the country, but only for the BJP, since completing its first 100 days in power.

No work permit in Saudi Arabia for Ebola-hit country nationals

Saudi Arabia has decided to stop issuing work permits to workers from Ebola-hit countries, including Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, an official said Tuesday.

The precautionary measure is part of a recommendation by foreign and health ministries to prevent the virus from entering the country, Xinhua reported citing the official.

On April 1, Saudi Arabia imposed a ban on Hajj and Omra visa issue for citizens of Guinea and Liberia.

The country registered its first suspected Ebola case last month.

Woman found in unconscious state, dies

Banu Bi who was found in unconscious state near market at Mehdipatnam died yesterday. Asif Nagar police told this. Police is said to have found 55-year-old Banu Bi near Guddimalkapur Market in mysterious condition. She was rushed to the hospital by the police where she was undergoing treatment. However she died in the hospital.

Asif Nagar police told that Banu Bi, W/O Mahboob Shaikh, R/O Rasool Pura used to sell flowers. Police suspect that the woman collapsed due to weakness however police have registered a case and investigations are underway.
