Power failure cripples Mumbai, supply still not normal

A sudden power crisis gripped India’s commercial capital Tuesday with several areas facing power blackouts and load-shedding as a key power generating station developed problems. Normal power supply was only likely to be restored by late night.

The erratic supply was on account of tripping of Tata Power’s 500 MW Trombay Power Station Unit No.5 at around 9.45 a.m. on account of a technical hurdle, a Tata Power Company (TPC) official said.

Indian man kills wife, child in Saudi Arabia

An Indian man here allegedly burnt to death his wife and five-year-old child after the woman got to know of her husband’s extramarital affair, Saudi media reported today.

The woman and her minor child were found dead in their house in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Sunday, Arab News reported.

The man has admitted to the crime, the report quoted police as saying.

“The man said he killed the two after the woman came to know about his illicit relations with another woman who lived in the same house,” police said.

Rain makes Tuesday pleasant in Delhi, more expected Wednesday

A spell of light rain in the capital led to a pleasant Tuesday, with the maximum temperature recorded at 34.3 degrees Celsius, average for the season. The Met department has forecast more rain Wednesday.

“Wednesday will also be cloudy and more rain with thunderstorms is expected in Delhi. The maximum and the minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 31 degrees and 25 degrees Celsius,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Delhi received 2.2 mm rainfall till 5.30 p.m Tuesday.

Nepal, India to hold energy talks

Officials from Nepal and India will be meeting in New Delhi Wednesday and Thursday to hold talks on the much-touted Power Trade Agreement (PTA) between the energy-starved nations.

According to the decision taken during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal in August, the two sides agreed to complete the negotiations within 45 days.

CM reviews preparations for Metro Polis conference

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has issued instructions that the forthcoming International Metro Cities Representatives Conference to be held at Hyderabad should be made successful. He said that no inconvenience of what so ever it may be, to be caused to the delegates.

The Chief Minister on Tuesday reviewed the arrangements to be made for the conference to be held from 7th October to 10th October in Hyderabad. The conference will be attended by Mayors from Country and abroad, Commissioners, Town Planning Officers and experts in the Municipal Administration.

After SpiceJet, IndiGo enters fare war

Budget carrier IndiGo Tuesday started promotional air fares by offering discounted one-way fares starting at a low of Rs.999 (all inclusive one-way fare), a day after SpiceJet started its offer of Rs.499 one-way charge.

According to IndiGo, its Delhi-Japiur flight is priced at Rs.999 one-way, follwoed by Rs.1,399 Srinagar-Chandigarh. The fares go all the way upto Rs.4,829 for Bangalore-Delhi.

The fares are applicable for booking in 90 days in advance.

British deputy PM questions arrest of parents’ saving kid

British deputy prime minister has come in support of a campaign which seeks to to allow the parents of cancer patient Ashya King to be reunited with their five-year-old son, a media report said Tuesday.

The couple were arrested in Spain after taking Ashya King from Southampton General hospital without doctors’ consent, prompting police to launch a major search for them.

Ashya King’s father has said he took the gravely ill five-year-old from hospital without consent to get him treatment unavailable in Britain, a media report said.

US drone attacks Al Shabaab leader’s home in Somalia

A US drone targeted the home of the leader of the Al Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabaab terrorist organisation, Ahmed Abdi Godane, in Somalia, Somali officials told the media Tuesday.

According to the governor of southern Somalia’s Lower Shebelle region, Abdukadir Nur Sidi, the attack took place late Monday night. The governor could not confirm Godane’s death during the attack.

“The drone launched several attacks where leaders of Al Shabaab and their fighters were holding a secret meeting,” Sidi told Somalian broadcaster RBC.

Kala-azar free India by 2015: Harsh Vardhan

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Monday said that India aims to eliminate dreaded vector-borne disease kala-azar by 2015.

“We are confident to eliminate kala-azar by 2015 with a new road map,” Harsh Vardhan said at a function here after launching non-invasive diagnostic methods for detecting kala-azar by using oral fluid and urine samples at Rajendra Memorial Research Institute of Medical Sciences here.

Harsh Vardhan also attended a day-long meeting on kala-azar with officials and experts from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand.

Congress yet to recover from losses due to YSR’s death: Raghuveera

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Dr N Raghuveera Reddy has stated that the Congress party has failed to recover from the losses that it suffered due to the death of former Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Speaking to media persons after paying rich tributes to YSR on his death anniversary at Indira Bhavan here, Raghuveera Reddy recalled the services of former Chief Minister. He said YSR brought the Congress party to power in the State twice. However, the Congress plunged into crisis after his death and consequently, lost the elections in 2014.

UN to probe Israeli offensive against Gaza

A senior Palestinian diplomat announced Tuesday that a UN inquiry committee will arrive in the Gaza Strip in October to probe the 50-day Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.

“We were officially informed that the committee will arrive in the Gaza Strip in the first week of October,” Ibrahim Khreisha, the Palestinian representative to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), told Xinhua.

Vinod Mehta named for G.K. Reddy award

Veteran journalist Vinod Mehta has been named for the G.K. Reddy Memorial Award 2014 for his outstanding contribution in the field of journalism, it was announced Tuesday.

The award, which comprises Rs.5 lakh in cash, a gold medal and a citation was founded in the memory of distinguished journalist G.K. Reddy.

The award ceremony will be held here in December 2014.

Mehta is presently the editorial chairman of the Outlook Group.

Previous recipients of the award include prominent journalists like H.K. Dua, Aroon Purie and Prabhu Chawla.

Banks open 9.28 lakh accounts in AP under PMJDY

Various banks across Andhra Pradesh have opened 9.28 lakh basic savings accounts by conducting as many as 11,353 camps as part of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.

According to the State Level Bankers Committee, it was aimed to open 6 lakh basic savings accounts in banks during the special campaign period from August 16 to 30th. With the excellent efforts put in by various banks in the state, 9.28 lakh basic savings accounts were opened in 11353 camps conducted by banks during this period, the SLBC said.

REC assures Rs 20,000 Cr funding for Telangana power projects

The Rural Electrification Corporation of Government of India has assured to fund to a tune of Rs.20,000/- crores for the projects of Telangana GENCO, TRANSCO and distribution companies.

REC Chairman and Managing Director Rajeev Sharma along with GENCO CMD D Prabhakar Rao called on Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at the Secretariat here on Tuesday. The Chief Minister expressed his thanks to the REC CMD and following his suggestion the latter also agreed to fund all the GENCO Projects.

Lizard found in mid-day meal in Bihar

Six children in a government school in Bihar fell ill Tuesday after eating their mid-day meal in which a dead lizard was later found, an official said.

The children were admitted to a government hospital in Begusarai district and are said to be out of danger, a district official said.

The students complained of uneasiness after eating the meal at the Pidhauli middle school. Soon after, some children informed the school authorities that a dead lizard was found in the food.

Samples of the meal were collected by police.

Priyanka Chopra, who will be seen packing punches in forthcoming biopic “Mary Kom”, had fun on the sets of “Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC) when it was turned into a boxing ring.

The biopic on five-time World Champion boxer M.C. Mary Kom will release Sep 5 and to promote the film, Priyanka shot an episode with megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who hosts KBC in its eighth season.

IGT contestant Jasleen Royal enters Bollywood with ‘Khoobsurat’

Delhi girl Jasleen Royal, who participated in the first season of reality TV show “India’s Got Talent” (IGT), makes her debut as a playback singer with the song “Preet” in Sonam Kapoor-starrer “Khoobsurat”.

Penned by Amitabh Verma and composed by Sneha Khanwalkar, the song was released Monday by T-series, said a statement. She’s expected to perform at the music launch of the film Friday in Mumbai.

Before her Bollywood debut, Royal had released three singles – “Panchhi ho javan”, “Mai ni” and “Din shagna da”.

NHRC to host annual meet of rights groups

The NHRC will Wednesday host the 19th annual general meeting of the Asia-Pacific Forum (APF) of the National Human Rights Institutions that aims to promote cooperation, coordination and promotion of human rights issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

The forum that includes 15 NHRIs and six associate members across the Asia-Pacific region will discuss their collective agenda on human rights of some vulnerable sections of the society in the next five years.

Rocker Jimi Jamison dies at 63

Rock singer Jimi Jamison, who fronted the 1980s bands Cobra and Survivor, died following a heart attack, said his agent. He was 63.

He passed away Aug 31, said the agent.

Jamison succumbed to a heart attack at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, reports usmagazine.com.

Survivor’s Facebook page mourned the loss of “our brother” Jamison.

There was a post on the page, which read: “The entire Survivor family is very shocked and saddened.”

Jamison joined the band in 1984, and recorded hit songs like “The moment of truth”, “The search is over”, “Is this love” and “Burning heart”.

Dunst criticises Apple for leaked nude photos

Actress Kirsten Dunst has hit out at Apple after nude images of her were allegedly leaked online.

The 32-year-old took to Twitter to criticise the American multinational corporation after it emerged that a flaw in its iCloud service may have allowed an unidentified hacker to steal explicit images of her and “100 other celebrities” and publish them on the image-sharing forum 4chan, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
