Saudi arrests 88 in ‘anti-terrorism’ drive

Saudi Arabia has arrested 88 suspected extremists, more than half of them ex-Qaeda detainees who had previously been released, the interior ministry announced today.

The arrests come as part of the kingdom’s drive to “punish” those “belonging to or supporting” groups classified as “terrorist,” the ministry added in a statement on the official SPA news agency.

Man held in Haryana for selling gender-test kit

A Delhi-based man has been arrested for selling kits to people to help them illegally decide the gender of their unborn child, officials said Tuesday.

State health department secretary and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Rakesh Gupta said Sanjay Khatana of Delhi was arrested after being caught red-handed by a three-member team of health officials.

CM Reviews World Mayors’ Meet

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao today held a high-level review meeting on World Mayors’ Conference to be held here in October.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday hard sold India to Japanese investors saying that his country offers only a red carpet and not red tape while dubbing his five-day trip to Japan that ends Wednesday as “very successful”.

“I’ve come to assure you there is no red tape but only red carpet that awaits you in India,” he said while delivering the keynote address in a seminar at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, co-hosted by Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro).

Govt Plan To Fill Up Meo, Diet Lecturers

Education Minister, G Jagadish Reddy today held a meeting with Employees Associations at Secretariat here. The minister discussed on the preparation of service rules in the meeting.

The minister is learnt to have taken a decision to fill up the posts of MEOs and Diet Lecturers this month.

It was also decided to relieve those teachers in October who were transferred in August and timings of schools should be followed based on orders issued by the government.

Telangana: tehsildar gets one year’s RI for taking bribe

A local court has convicted a former tehsildar for taking bribe.

Additional special judge for anti-corruption cases here today sentenced R Govardhanachary, posted in Kasipet mandal in Adilabad district of Telangana at the time of the offence, to a rigorous imprisonment of one year under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court also imposed fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

He had been trapped by Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 to issue proceedings for restoration of possession of a land.

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Shaharyar Khan has said that he will use his good relations with the Indian cricket board for the resumption of bilateral ties at the earliest.

Shaharyar, a career diplomat who was posted as Pakistan’s High Commissioner in New Delhi and also remained foreign secretary, said that he had always enjoyed good relations with the top officials of the BCCI.

“Whether it is Jagmohan Dalmiya, the late Raj Singh Dungarpur or Srinivasan I have good relations with them and I will soon talk to them about Indo-Pak cricket relations,” he said.

Known for his communicating skills, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today joined the ceremonial Japanese drummers here to perform a jugalbandi with them as he drummed up support for Indian business in Japan.

Modi tried his hands at drums while inaugurating the TCS Cultural Centre here.

The Prime Minister was inspired after watching the drummers and joined them, much to the amusement of the gathering.

Indian woman charged for having illegitimate child

An Indian man filed a case in a court in the UAE against his wife, who gave birth to a child in 2010 despite their not having sex for eight years, a media reported said Tuesday.

The man, who is identified only as R.J, 48, said he moved to a new job in Kuwait in 2006 and left his wife and only son in the UAE.

R.J said that last year his friends, who live in the UAE, told him that his wife had given birth to his child in 2010.

Ex-attorney general Vahanvati dead

Legal luminary and former attorney general of India Goolamhoossein Essaji Vahanvati died following cardiac arrest at a private hospital here Tuesday evening, official sources said. He was 65.

He is survived by his wife and son.

Vahanvati had been ailing with a lung infection since some time.

Solicitor general of India for five years from 2004, he was appointed the 13th attorney general of India, or the government’s top lawyer, in 2009 for a three-year term, which was extended by another two years in 2012.

Former Attorney General Goolan Vahanvati passed away here today following a cardiac arrest. He was 65.

The 13th Attorney General of India, Vahanvati was appointed to office in June 2009 after previously having served as the Solicitor General for five years.

In May 2012, Vanavati’s term had been extended by three years, before he resigned from his post on May 27 this year. (ANI)
