High protein diets may lower blood pressure

Adults who consume a high-protein diet may be at a lower risk for developing high blood pressure, research shows.

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) found that participants consuming highest amount of protein (an average of 100 gram protein/day) had a 40 percent lower risk of having high blood pressure compared to the lowest intake level.

“Protein intake may play a role in the long-term prevention of high blood pressure,” said Lynn Moore, an associate professor of medicine at BUSM.

Pregnant women who drink a lot of milk put their babies at risk of having an iron deficiency during an important phase of development, New Zealand researchers said Friday.

Iron is essential for healthy brain development, and a deficiency in babies and toddlers, when the brain is developing rapidly, is associated with small, but important differences in brain function, behaviour and learning, Xinhua reported citing a study from the University of Auckland.

Include more vitamin B1-rich food in your diet as neurologists have underlined that deficiency of a single vitamin B1 (or thiamine) can cause a potentially fatal brain disorder.

The brain disorder called Wernicke encephalopathy typically occurs in people who have disorders such as alcoholism and anorexia that lead to malnourishment.

“Wernicke encephalopathy is an example of the wide range of brain diseases called encephalopathies that are caused by metabolic disorders and toxic substances,” said Matthew McCoyd, a neurologist at Loyola University Medical Center in the US.

Versatile actress Vidya Balan is looking forward to shoot Mohit Suri’s “Hamari Adhuri Kahani”. She says it would be her second intense love story after her debut film “Parineeta.”

Angry Bihar man bobbitises himself

A man in Bihar has bobbitised himself, sniping off his penis with a sharp knife in a fit of rage after a heated argument with his wife, police said Friday. The man was angry that the couple doesn’t have a male child.

“The man was upset for some time for having only two daughters, and repeatedly taunting his wife for not bearing a male child. This led to a dispute between them,” a relative told police.

This shocking incident took place Thursday in Siwan district’s Khojwa village.

Arrest Indian origin woman’s ex-husband: Malaysian court

A Malaysian court Friday ordered the arrest of an Indian origin teacher’s former husband and find her youngest child.

Due to a custody tussle between kindergarten teacher M. Indira Gandhi and her convert former husband Mohamad Riduan Abdulla, the Ipoh Syariah High Court Sep 29, 2009, granted custody of their three children to Abdulla, the Malaysian Star reported.

On March 11, 2010, the court allowed the children to be under Indira’s care with once-a-week access given to the father.

Sensex trades flat; oil and gas stocks gain

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Friday was trading flat at 37.49 points or 0.14 percent up as oil and gas stocks gained.

Good buying was observed in oil and gas, banking and auto sectors, while selling pressure was seen in healthcare sector.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 27,048.15 points, was trading at 27,033.36 points (at 9.15 a.m.) in the early session, up 37.49 points or 0.14 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,995.87 points.

Minister asks Maharashtra government to acquire Dr. BR Ambedkar’s London home

A Congress minister in Maharashtra has asked the state government to coordinate with the Centre to acquire a residential property in London where Dr BR Ambedkar lived in the 1920s. The 2,050 sq ft property on King Henry’s Road, London, is expected to cost an estimated Rs 40 crore, state Water Conservation Minister Nitin Raut said.

“I came across the auction notice of the house and pursued the matter,” said Raut, a prominent Dalit leader from Nagpur. “There is no politics involved,” he said, when pointed out that the move comes ahead of the Assembly polls in the state, slated next month.

Pastor arrested in Kochi for molesting schoolgirl

A pastor has been arrested at nearby Kothamangalam for allegedly molesting a nine-year-old school girl, police said.

Devadas (64) was a pastor of a church at Vadattupura, near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam District. The pastor took the girl, who had come to the church compound to pluck flowers in July, to his living quarters and molested her, police said. He also threatened the child that she would be killed if she revealed the incident and later molested her several times.

The incident came to light when the school authorities sent her for counselling, seeing a change in her behaviour.

Desperate hunt for the missing in submerged colonies

A group of locals is keenly looking for somebody in a flooded colony of Mehjoornagar in uptown area of Srinagar.

They are searching for a Sikh woman who is believed to have drowned during the water surge five days ago. A Sikh man identified as 35-year-old Gagan also drowned around the same time and his body was recovered two days back.

However, the woman is still untraceable and locals wonder why there is no sign of hers even after passage of so many days.

SC extends stay on Surinder Koli’s execution

The Supreme Court today extended till October 29 the stay on execution of death sentence of Nithari rapist-cum-serial killer Surinder Koli.

A bench headed by justice H L Dattu posted the case for hearing on October 29, on Koli’s plea seeking review of apex court’s verdict upholding his conviction and death sentence in one of the murder cases.

On September 8, the bench, also comprising justice A R Dave, had stayed the execution of death sentence of Koli for killing children in a house in Nithari village in Noida near here in 2006, for a period of one week.

(Siasat News): A student residing in a hostel in Mir Chowk, died in suspicious circumstances. It is said that the deceased Haricharan, 21, was the son of one Nagaiah, native of Nizamabad and staying in a hostel in Darush-shifa.

He was an engineering student. Last night, his condition suddenly deteriorated and his roommates Suresh and Srinivas immediately informed his parents who turned up from Nizamabad.

India’s telecom industry is in a mess: Vodafone CEO

The world’s second-largest telecom operator, Vodafone, facing taxation issues in India, on Thursday said it was difficult for foreign companies to do business in the country because of slower government clearances.

Vodafone India Chief Executive & Managing Director Marten Pieters said the firm had in December last year sought government’s approval to bring in funds from the parent company for buying airwaves but the clearance was still awaited.

$100 billion investment likely in renewable energy in 4 years: Piyush Goyal

The government is expecting $ 100 billion investment in the renewable energy sector in the next four years as it firms up a new policy framework for the same.

“We expect $ 100 billion in the renewable energy sector in the next four years,” Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal said today at Economist India summit.

He also said the government expects $ 50-60 billion investment in power transmission and distribution in the next four years.
