16 people killed as bus falls into gorge in Uttarakhand

Sixteeen people were killed and seventeen injured today when a bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge in Tehri district of Uttarakhand.

A total of 33 persons were on board the bus when it fell into a 300 ft deep gorge near Juyalgarh, Tehri Superintendent of Police Mukhtar Mohsin said.

Nearly half of the bus was submerged in a local stream, which joins River Alaknanda, after the accident, he said.

The bus was going from Haridwar to Karnaprayag. The mishap occurred as the driver tried to overtake another vehicle, he said.

Gangrape, Kidnappings, Accidents on ORR scared people

The Outer Ring Road have left people petrified due to reports of gangrape, kidnappings and accidents so much so that even a mere sight of stranger makes them reckless.

A pair of techie’s who were employees of I-Q Solutions, Madhapur spooked so much on the ORR when the three strangers approaching their car make them sped away recklessly in poor visibility conditions. The“three strangers” gave them a chase for kilometres on the expressway scared them more.

Thoroughly shaken, the two filed a verbal complaint at the RGIA police station.

In a joint statement issued here today, three leading clerics and senior faculty members at the Department of Sunni Theology, Aligarh Muslim University, while welcoming the Deoband seminary’s stand also urged the media not to fall prey to communal politics by exaggerating and sensationalising isolated cases of interreligious marriages.

Minor gang-raped in UP

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by four persons in Jareefnagar area here, following which two of them have been arrested, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place last night when the victim, who was sleeping on the terrace of her house, was kidnapped and raped by the four, SSP Santosh Kumar Singh said.

The accused have been identified as Amit, Muktiyaar, Bhola Pandit, and Dannu, he said.

Amit and Muktiyaar have been arrested following a complaint by the girl’s father while Bhola and Dannu are absconding, police said.

Security forces hit hard by J&K floods; hundreds of rifles, bombs still submerged

Mughal era coins recovered from Kanpur’s cantonment area

Paramilitary personnel today recovered 61 silver coins of the Mughal era from Kanpur’s cantonment area containing Arabic and Persian inscriptions.

Army official CP Bhadola confirmed the report saying that they got the information from a saint of a temple who told them that some digging is going on in the area and the kids are taking out coins from there.

Chhattisgarh to sent 10,000 solar lamps to flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir

The Chhattisgarh government has decided to provide 10,000 solar lamps and other necessary electrical equipment, including transformers, to people of flood-ravaged Jammu & Kashmir.

The decision was taken during a meeting of Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA), which was chaired by Chief Minister Raman Singh, at the Mantralaya last evening, an official release said here today. Besides solar lanterns, transformers and other equipment will be provided to maintain power supply in the flood-hit region of the northern state, it said.

Over 50 percent turnout for Medak Lok Sabha seat

Over 50 percent voter turnout was recorded till 3 p.m. Saturday during the bypolls in Telangana’s Medak Lok Sabha constituency and Andhra Pradesh’s Nandigama assembly seat.

Barring minor incidents, polling was peaceful, said Election Commission officials.

Voting was brisk in Medak, where 54 percent polling was recorded till 3 p.m.

Nandigama also witnessed heavy turnout, with 58 percent voters casting their ballot till 3 p.m.

Over 1,42,000 rescued in flood-ravaged Kashmir

Over 1,42,000 people have been rescued so far from various parts of flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir by the armed forces and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), a statement said Saturday.

Eighty six transport aircraft and helicopters of the Indian Air Force and Army Aviation Corps have been pressed into rescue and relief operations, the defence ministry statement said.

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council accused the United States today of violating the sovereignty of nations on the “pretext of fighting terrorism” in Iraq and Syria.

An Indian worker has died in Saudi Arabia after contracting MERS coronavirus and his family is reluctant to repatriate the remains back home amid fears that they might get infected if they came in contact with the body.

Dasharati Sattaih from Telangana, who was working in Jeddah with a leading maintenance company, contracted the virus and died on June 20 this year, the Arab News reported.

Praful Patel forced Air India board to buy 40 extra planes, says former CAG

Former Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai has claimed that former Union Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel had pressurized the Air India board to buy an extra 40 planes.

Rai said that Patel put pressure on the Air India board during his tenure at the Civil Aviation Ministry, which caused the flag carrier to purchase 68 planes instead of the 28 that it was originally to be bought. These extra planes, said Rai, were bought at a cost of Rs 38,000 crore.

A 20-year-old woman suffered minor burn injuries after a jilted lover allegedly threw acid on her face in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, police said today.

The incident occurred at Chagalamarri village last night when one Lal Basha threw acid on the woman, after she rejected his proposal to continue their affair, they said.

“The woman and Basha initially were having an affair. But after coming to know that Basha was already married she rejected his proposal,” Allagadda Circle Inspector Sudhakar Reddy said based on a complaint lodged by the victim.
