Pappu assails BJP for playing politics in name of ‘love jihad’

Senior RJD leader Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav today assailed BJP and RSS of trying to derive political benefits out of the ‘love jihad’ campaign.

Through the episode concerning Tara Sahdeo and Ranjit Kohli alias Rakibul Hassan in Jharkhand, the BJP and RSS were trying to give a communal colour to the incident to derive political benefits, Yadav told reporters.

Questioning BJP’s sincerity towards Hindus, the RJD MP from Madhepura asked why didn’t they encourage inter-caste marriage among dalits and extremely backward castes.

AP bypoll: Over 65% voting till 6 PM in Medak & Nandigama

Over 65 per cent polling was reported in the bye-elections of the Medak Lok Sabha seat in Telangana and the Nandigama (SC) Assembly seat in Andhra Pradesh, as polling came to a close at 6 PM today.

The exact polling percentage will be known only late in the night, officials in the Chief Electoral Office here said.

TRS’ K Prabhakar Reddy is locked in a contest with BJP’s T Jayaprakash Reddy in Medak, the seat vacated by K Chandrasekhar Rao on becoming the Chief Minister of Telangana.

Former board president Shashank Manohar Saturday ruled out contesting the impending elections against N. Srinivasan and accused his successor of taking advantage of the amendment of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) constitution for seeking a third term in office.

Fighting IS: Iraq PM orders halt to shelling of civilian areas

Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Saturday that he has ordered security forces to stop shelling populated areas in all cities that are under the control of militant groups.

YSRCP MLA Roja alleged today that TDP goons tried to take over the traditional Gangamma Jatara in Nagari of Chittoor district. She alleged they forcibly snatched the harathi plate from her hands and attacked her. In the melee, Roja suffered injuries on her wrist. Sheikh Hasina, Modi to meet in US

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi are scheduled to meet in New York this month during the UN General Assembly (UNGA), media reported Saturday.

This would be the first meeting between Modi and Hasina after the BJP came to power in India in May, bdnews 24 reported.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, who recently underwent cardiac surgeries, was on Saturday discharged from Asian Heart Hospital in Mumbai.

Lalu, after undergoing three major successful heart surgeries and rehabilitation programme last month, was discharged from the hospital at around 3 pm today, a hospital statement said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief lalu Prasad Yadav was today discharged from Asian Heart Hospital in Mumbai after undergoing two major heart surgeries last month.

The surgeries were performed to replace an aortic valve and to repair the aorta.

The 67-year-old former Bihar chief minister was hospitalized on August 25; the day bye-election results were being counted in Bihar and three other states.

Bengal sends drinking water pouches to flood-hit Kashmir

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday announced the dispatch of drinking water pouches for people in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir.

“A large number of my brothers and sisters in Kashmir are extremely distressed due to massive floods. A huge number of tourists from various places are also stranded in Kashmir. Many tourists from my state (Bengal) are stranded there as well. In this hour of crisis, we expect everyone to cooperate.

“For immediate relief, we are sending drinking water pouches to the flood-affected areas,” Banerjee posted on her official Facebook page.

280 killed in Pakistan rain, floods

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Saturday said that at least 280 people have been killed due to the heavy rain and floods in various parts of the country.

NDMA spokesman Ahmad Kamal said that more than two million people have been affected in the ongoing crisis, Dawn online reported.

The statement comes as military specialists blew up dykes in central Pakistan to divert swollen rivers and save cities from raging floods.

Most of the breaches at the overflowing Chenab river were made overnight as flood waters reached Multan.

Hamas not to hold direct talks with Israel

Deputy chief of the Islamic Hamas movement in Gaza, Ismail Haneya, said Saturday that his movement is not intending to hold direct talks with Israel.

“Hamas won’t hold direct talks with Israel,” Haneya said in a meeting with Palestinian reporters in Gaza.

Haneya was reacting to an earlier statement made by senior Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzooq, who said in an interview with a pro-Hamas television channel that if Hamas found itself obliged to directly talk to Israel, “it will do”, Xinhua reported.

Abu Marzooq also said that the talks with Israel “are not taboo.”

Man kills lover, shoots himself near Ghaziabad

A man strangled his lover and then shot himself near here, police said Saturday.

The incident occurred Friday night. The bodies of 25-year-old Amit and 22-year-old Priyanka were found in a house at the DLF Colony in Sahibabad near here Saturday.

Police said Amit stays in Tahirpur near G.T.B. Enclave in east Delhi but had come to his employer’s flat at the DLF Colony.

He called his girlfriend there and they had a scuffle. Amit strangled her and then shot himself.

Priyanka, who hails from Meerut, was staying with a cousin in Vaishali area to prepare for a bank examination.

High turnout in Tripura assembly byelection

Over 88 percent of the 38,843 voters Saturday cast their ballot in the byelection to the Manu assembly seat in Tripura, officials said.

“Over 88 percent voters have cast their ballot in the byelection. The election was absolutely peaceful and smooth. There was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ashutosh Jindal told IANS.

He said there was one complaint of electoral misconduct raised by a political party. “We have inquired into the complaint and it was found untrue,” he said.

The National Security Agency was unable to find evidence that leaker Edward Snowden ever raised concerns internally about its sweeping surveillance programs, after an exhaustive search that included deleted emails, court documents showed.

Communal tension escalates in Belgaum after ‘love jihad’ hoax

A tense atmosphere prevailed following communal clashes for three days in Belgaum. Incidents of stone pelting and vehicle damage were reported in the communally sensitive areas here on September 11.

AP govt forms panel on shifting of offices to Vijayawada

Keen to relocate to the state’s “ad hoc capital” Vijayawada from Hyderabad at the earliest, the Andhra Pradesh government today constituted a three-member committee of principal secretaries to examine shifting of offices of the heads of departments.

Besides being the ad hoc capital, Vijayawada region will eventually become the permanent capital of the state, though the exact location for this has not been fixed yet.
