1.5 lakh people still marooned in J-K: Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said 1.5 lakh people are still marooned after the worst floods in a century devastated the state last week even as he said there was some concern over rising water levels in northern parts of the Valley.

As fears of possible outbreak of water-borne diseases mounted with flood waters receding, Mr Abdullah also said that Kashmir has a history that lives are not lost as much in floods as in the aftermath of this natural disaster.

Rebels advance in Syria’s southern province

Armed militant groups, including Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, advanced in Syria’s southern province of Qunaitera, as the Syrian troops stripped the rebels of key towns in the central province of Hama, activists said Saturday.

The Nusra Fighters and like-minded groups were advancing in Qunaitera, at the border with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that the various rebel groups were now in control of over 80 percent of that province after taking control over the towns of Rawadi and Hamidiyeh a day earlier.

NATO expansion to Russian borders unacceptable: Lavrov

NATO’s expansion by pulling more Russia’s neighbouring countries into the alliance is unacceptable, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday.

“NATO expects to turn as many countries as possible into its member states, and expand to Russian borders — that’s unacceptable,” Lavrov said in an interview aired by Moscow’s TVC, Xinhua reported.

“We expect every country to comply with the agreements of ensuring indivisible and overall security in the Euro-Atlantic region, among which the assurances of NATO not expanding eastward play a decisive role,” he was quoted as saying.

Britain verifying video of aid worker’s beheading

The UK Foreign Office said late Saturday it was “working urgently to verify” a video purporting to show beheading of a British hostage by the Sunni militant group Islamic State (IS) in Syria, media reported.

The foreign office said that it was trying to confirm the authenticity of the video purporting to show the death of aid worker David Haines, who was kidnapped last year in Syria, Xinhua reported.

If true it was another “disgusting murder”, the Foreign Office said, adding that it was offering support to Haines’ family.

67% polling in Medak LS, 69% in Nandigama by-polls

Over 67 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the by-elections for Medak Lok Sabha constituency held on Saturday.

Similarly, 69.49% polling was recorded in Nandigama Assembly segment of Krishna district.

Narsapur Assembly segment of Medak Lok Sabha constituency registered the highest 77% polling, followed by 68% in Dubbak, 67% in Gajwel, 66% in Siddipet, 64% in Sangareddy, 63% in Medak and 52% in Patencheru Assembly segment.

About 50 pc polling in UP bypolls till 5 pm

About 50 per cent electorate today exercised their franchise in bypolls to 11 Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh till 5 pm.

Around 53.2 per cent votes were polled in Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat where Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his MP wife Dimple Yadav cast their votes, while 49.78 per cent votes were polled in 11 Assembly seats, an official statement issued here said.

Seven-year-old girl raped, murdered in Faizabad

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Bikapur Kotwali police station area of Faizabad district, police said on Saurday.

The girl had gone missing on Thursday evening after she went to attend a birthday party in her neighbourhood, they said.

Her body was found the next day in a pond, they said.

“The postmortem report has confirmed that the girl was raped and then strangulated,” Faizabad Additional SP P R Shrivastava said.

A case has been registered in this regard, he added.

The girl was a student of Class 2.

Heart drug could be cure for Ebola: British experts

Researchers at the University of Liverpool have made a breakthrough that can lead to a cure for the deadly Ebola virus currently sweeping through West Africa, media reports said.

The university has said the experts stumbled across an existing drug used in the treatment of severe heart disease, which could be adapted to fight the contagious Ebola virus, Xinhua reported Saturday.

A team from the Health Protection Research Unit in Emerging Infections, based at the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, have been investigating new ways to treat Ebola.

Global coalition needed to defeat IS: Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday said a global coalition was essential to defeat Sunni militant group Islamic State (IS).

Kerry also stressed that a concerted effort must be made to choke off financing for the militant group and prevent foreign jihadis from joining its ranks in Iraq and Syria.

“An international coalition is essential to defeating IS,” Kerry said at a joint press conference here with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukri.

Besides, Kerry hailed the support the US got from Egypt and the Arab League in its fight against terrorism.

25 militants killed across Afghanistan

At least 25 Taliban militants were Saturday killed in counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan.

“The Afghan National Police conducted several anti-terrorism joint operations with the Afghan National Army and the National Directorate of Security to clean some of the areas of terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan,” MENA quoted an interior ministry statement as saying.

The statement said at least eight militants were wounded in operations conducted in Ghazni, Badakhshan, Logar, Nangarhar, Kunar, Helmand and Kapisa provinces.
