Actress Neha Marda, who plays a girl faced with atrocities by her chauvinistic husband in “Doli Armaanon Ki”, believes the show gives out a positive message for women to encourage them to live life on their own terms.

The actress was recently in Kanpur to talk to a group of women about their basic rights in a marriage, and about women empowerment.

She said: “I believe we’re delivering a very relevant and pertinent social message through our show ‘Doli Armaanon Ki’.”

Reopen HAL Airport in Bangalore: Aerospace Major Chief

Aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) today said the re-opening of HAL airport will place the city in the league of international cities which have more than one airport.

Speaking at a function organised by Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies (SIATI), HAL Chairman R K Tyagi said apart from its previous experience, HAL has the infrastructure and capacity to achieve this goal.

7-year-old girl raped, murdered in UP

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Bikapur Kotwali police station area of Faizabad district, police said on Saturday.

The girl had gone missing on Thursday evening after she went to attend a birthday party in her neighbourhood, they said. Her body was found the next day in a pond, they said.

“The postmortem report has confirmed that the girl was raped and then strangulated,” Faizabad Additional SP PR Shrivastava said.

A case has been registered in this regard, he added. The girl was a student of Class 2.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, has hinted that his company has not lost sight in the consumer durable segment of television.

In an interview given to a television channel, Cook rued how television viewing was still stuck back in the 70s and that there was every possibility of missing a show, the Mashable reported.

Apple Watchers believe that there could be one more product in the offing from the Apple stable before the end of 2014, which most likely include the iPad, but did not rule out an Apple TV update or even an all-new Apple Television set.

Attention parents! Favoring one child might expose others to drug abuse

In families where love and support are generally scarce, even perceived favouritism may lead to use of alcohol, cigarettes or drugs by children, says a study.

For families that are not very close to each other or disengaged families, favouritism was strongly associated with alcohol, cigarette and drug use by the less favoured children, the findings showed.

“With favouritism in disengaged families, it was not just that they were more likely to use substances, it also escalated,” said professor Alex Jensen from the Brigham Young University in the US.

U.S. to train 5,000 Syrian rebels to fight militants

The United States will train 5,000 Syrian rebels every year to fight Islamic State (IS) militants, said the Pentagon.

The announcement came with regard to President Barack Obama’s new campaign against the IS fighters, reported the Washington Times

The goal that U.S. military planners expected to achieve includes equipping the Syrian rebels in foreign countries in another one year.

Saudi Arabia has already agreed to play a key role in Obama’s strategy to counter terrorism in Iraq and Syria.

‘Pinkathon’ held in Delhi to promote breast cancer awareness

A ‘pinkathon’ was held in Delhi on Sunday to raise awareness about the deadly disease, breast cancer, which claims the lives of millions of women across the world.

Women of all ages participated in the event by running the marathon, which was sponsored by the State Bank of India (SBI).

Actor Milind Soman was also present at the marathon to encourage the runners.

Breast and cervical cancers have emerged as one of the deadliest cancers in the country, which if not diagnosed on time, can lead to fatal results. (ANI)

MCL’s 1600 MW pithead thermal power project to seek board nod

The first 1600 MW pithead thermal power project by Coal India Ltd subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd is expected to be ratified at the next board meeting.

“The board may take up the matter in the next meeting on September 17. Once it is cleared, it would reach the Coal India board for approval,” MCL chairman and managing director A N Sahay said at the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India seminar.

Located in the Sundergarh district of Odisha, it is the maiden pithead thermal power project of CIL involving an investment of around Rs 10,000 crore.

Army rescues medical students from flood affected area

Continuing with their relief and rescue operations, the Indian army rescued some medical students from flood affected areas in Srinagar.

Thanking the army for rescuing them, a medical student said, “We are safe and happy, and we thank the army, our director and all those who have helped in our rescue.”

So far, over 1,42,000 persons have been rescued by the armed forces and NDRF from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the ongoing rescue and relief operations in the flood ravaged state.

Grenade blast in Assam kills one, injures four

A grenade blast by two unidentified men in Mangaldoi town of Assam killed one and severely injured four others.

Earlier on Thursday, the security forces had gunned down at least three militants of the United People’s Liberation Front (UPLF) in the Hatikhali area of Assam’s Dima Hasao District recovering huge cache of arms and ammunitions from them. (ANI)

Kerry arrives in Paris for IS talks

US Secretary of State John Kerry Sunday arrived in Paris after a four-day tour of the Middle East trying to build a coalition to defeat the Islamic State (IS).

Nearly 40 countries, including 10 Arab states, have signed up to a US-led plan to tackle the extremist group, the BBC reported.

Kerry arrived at the Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris after flying from Cairo, where he met Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi and Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi.

Cracking the whip, government has disconnected power and water supplies to the official accommodations here of former union ministers and ex-MPs including Ajit Singh, Jitendra Singh and Mohd Azharuddin who refused to vacate the premises.

“Power and water supplies have been disconnected to a total 30 houses occupied by former ministers and ex-MPs who are yet to vacate their government accommodations despite being given adequate time to do so,” said a senior NDMC official adding “the action-taken report has been submitted to the Lok Sabha Housing Committee yesterday.”

A Delhi court has acquitted a man of the charge of raping a five-year-old girl after the child retracted from her statement.

Additional sessions judge Rajneesh Kumar Gupta freed the man, a resident of Ranjeet Nagar here, saying there was no evidence against him and the victim child deposed in the court that he did not do anything wrong with her.

“From the evidence on record, no substantive evidence has been come on record to prove that the accused has inserted a stick in the private part of the prosecutrix (child).

Jammu and Kashmir Floods: 40 Andhra Pradesh Students Rescued

At least 40 students hailing from Andhra Pradesh have been rescued from the floods in Jammu and Kashmir and are on their way back to their hometowns in the southern state.

According to AP government’s special representative in New Delhi, Kambhampati Ramamohan Rao, the students are flying out from Srinagar airport to Delhi today. They would be travelling to Hyderabad from the Delhi airport.

In total, about 76 students, hailing from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, studying in NIT Srinagar, have been so far rescued from the floods in Jammu and Kashmir in the last two days.

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani Saturday “exhorted” all vice chancellors (VCs) of central universities to ensure prevention of sexual harassment.

Irani said this at a two-day retreat of vice chancellors of central universities in Chandigarh Sep 12-13.

“The minister exhorted all VCs to ensure prevention of sexual harassment of students and staff at all costs,” a ministry statement said in New Delhi.

“All central universities should ensure proper facilities and infrastructure for disabled students,” the statement said.

Hyderabad-bound Malaysia Airlines flight forced to turn back

A Malaysia Airlines flight which departed from Kuala Lumpur for Hyderabad in India late Saturday made an air turn-back due to an auto-pilot defect, the company said in a statement Sunday.

It denied the claims circulating in social media that the MH198 plane was on fire, saying the defect had no impact on the aircraft or its passengers, according to Xinhua.

“However, as a precautionary measure, the operating captain decided to turn back,” it added.
