Sania Mirza and Saketh Myneni won India’s sixth gold medal on Monday by beating Chinese Taipei’s Hsien Yin Peng and Hao Ching Chan 6-4, 6-3 in Asian Games 2014 at Incheon.

Bouyed by the victory, Sania Mirza’s father Imran Mirza said, “It is an amazing feeling, I am very happy that Sania and Saketh have achieved gold in Asian Games. At a time when Telengana state is celebrating, Sania and Saket have given enough reason for the state and the country to celebrate.”

Russia urges probe into military flights at MH17 crash site

Russia has submitted a list of recommendations to the UN on the investigation into the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine in July, including an analysis of military aircraft movements in the area.

The recommendations, given in a letter signed by Russia’s representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin, were released on the UN’s website Monday.

56 killed in South Sudan road accident

At least 56 people were killed in a traffic accident in South Sudan Monday when a minibus collided with a truck on a road linking South Sudan with Uganda, according to a medial source in Juba Hospital.

“The victims could be more, but (the number of) those who were brought to the hospital is 56,” Xinhua quoted a source as saying on condition of anonymity.

Traffic has been heavy along roads linking South Sudan with its neighbouring countries since last September, when violence erupted between government troops and fighters loyal to former South Sudanese vice-president Riek Machar.

Ludhiana youths’ killing: Crackdown on police officials

The Punjab government Monday evening suspended a district police chief and dismissed four police officials after two brothers in their 20s were killed in Ludhiana district Saturday in a shootout with police.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Khanna police district, Harsh Kumar Bansal, was placed under suspension for “misconduct, dereliction of duty, not exercising proper supervisory control and shielding delinquent police officials” following the shootout.

‘Super Dan’ defends Asiad title in all-Chinese final

Chinese superstar Lin Dan defeated teammate Chen Long to win the men’s badminton singles title in Asian Games here Monday.

Newly-crowned world champion Chen Long started better in the first game, going into the break 11-4 up, with Lin appearing not in form. After committing several errors, Lin lost the game 12-21, reports Xinhua.

But the 31-year-old Lin rallied in the second with both players putting on an amazing display of powerful smashes and deft net duels. After leading 18-16, Lin never allowed his opponent to catch up by taking the game 21-16.

Reliance Capital to launch more India funds abroad

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group’s financial services arm Reliance Capital Asset Management Company (RCAM) Monday said it will consider launching more India-focused funds in foreign markets.

Court awards death to one, life term to 6 in 1996 blast

A local court today convicted seven men in an 18-year-old bomb blast case which had claimed 14 lives and awarded capital punishment to one and life imprisonment to remaining six.

Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bandikui (Dausa), Urmila Verma, gave the death sentence to Dr Abdul Hamid, the main accused, and life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1 lakh (each) to other six in the case.

They were convicted under various sections of IPC, including 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and others, according to special public prosecutor Vijay Tiwari.

Rs.46 crore released for families of Telanagana ‘martyrs’

The Telangana government has released Rs.46.2 crore towards financial assistance for families of those who laid down their lives for separate Telangana state.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao Monday signed the orders for payment of Rs.10 lakh each to the families of the martyrs. According to an official statement, the money will be paid to the families in their respective districts with full honours.

Rao assured that financial help would also be extended to the families of remaining martyrs after receipt of the reports from district collectors.

NDMA will be revamped: Rajnath Singh

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) would be restructured and revamped to meet new challenges, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Monday.

Inaugurating the 10th Formation Day of NDMA here, he said two new battalions of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been formed to strengthen its capabilities.

Rajnath Singh said that NDMA, NDRF,and the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) were playing important roles in disaster management, rescue operations and raising the awareness about disaster risk reduction.

Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service resumes

The bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir resumed Monday.

“Karwan-e-Aman” (Peace Bus Service) along the Line of Control was suspended for more than 20 days because of unprecedented floods in Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior state government official told IANS that 77 people, including 70 returnees (those going back after visiting their relatives in Jammu and Kashmir) and seven persons going from here to meet their relatives across the border, boarded the bus in Srinagar tMonday morning.

Egyptian court releases 21 Muslim Brotherhood members

A court in Egypt Monday decided to release 21 members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood (MB) on bail of 1,000 Egyptian pounds (about $140) each, state-run MENA news agency reported.

The defendants were convicted of torching police cars, inciting violence and ransacking state institutions after the dispersal of Nahda and Rabaa sit-in camps by Morsi loyalists.

Since the military-led removal of Morsi in July 2013, a massive security crackdown on Morsi supporters has left more than 1,000 dead while thousands of others were arrested.

Government should intervene to reduce hunger: experts

The government should directly intervene to prevent hunger amongst people instead of leaving it to charities and non-government organizations, experts in the field said here Monday.

Drawing parallels with the food security issue in the United States and India, Joel Berg of the New York Coalition Against Hunger said: “The US policies were very successful in the 1960s, but they are not working anymore”.

“There are children living in food insecurity in the United States,” he said advocating an international concept of right to food and shelter.

The Indian women’s doubles teams led the charge in table tennis Monday, advancing to the second round after winning their matches in the 17th Asian Games at the Suwon Gymnasium here Monday.

First up, the Indian pair of Ankita Das and Poulomi Ghatak outplayed Pakistani duo Rahila Kashif and Shabnam Bilal 3-0 (11-5, 11-1, 11-7) in just 11 minutes. In their next match Wednesday, Ankita-Poulomi will face South Korean pair of Youngsook Park and Haeun Yang, who registered a facile 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-1) win over Macau’s Fei Sut Tam and Mei Sio.

Discus thrower Seema Punia and the mixed doubles tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Saketh Myneni brought home the gold medals for India as seven medals came in on what was an impressive Monday for India at the 17th Asian Games.

Myneni teamed up with Sanam Singh to win the silver in the men’s doubles while wrestler Bajrang bagged the second silver of the day in the men’s freestyle 61kg. Middle-distance runners O.P.Jaisha, Naveen Kumar, wrestler Narsingh Pancham Yadav won the bronze medals.

Spanish diplomat found stabbed to death in Sudan

Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs announced Monday that a Spanish diplomat was found stabbed to death in Khartoum.

The victim, identified as Emiliano Garcia, was in charge of the consular section at the Spanish embassy in Khartoum.

He “has been found stabbed to death in his apartment in the Garden City neighbourhood in central Khartoum”, said the ministry in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Xinhua.

The CBI Monday named seven police officials in its charge sheet filed before a West Bengal court in connection with the custodial death of a man in Hooghly district, an agency official said.
