Protests, sit-ins affecting Pakistan’s progress: Nawaz Sharif

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Saturday said the sit-ins and protesters have affected Pakistan’s progress and people’s mandate cannot be sabotaged by a few thousand people, even as Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf reiterated the demand for his resignation.

In an interview Nawaz Sharif said he has already accepted the legitimate demands of the protesters, Geo News reported. He expressed surprise over Pakistan Awami Tehreek leader Tahir-ul Qadri’s stand as most of his demands had been accepted by the government.

CBI made to walk the wrong path: Trinamool minister

Said to be under the CBI’s scanner following the grilling of his former aide in the Saradha scam, West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra Saturday claimed the agency was “being made to walk the wrong path”.

The Trinamool Congress leader also rejected all the claims reportedly made by his former confidential assistant Bapi Karim who has been repeatedly interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the multi-crore rupee scam.

7 die as Ukraine plane crashes in Sahara: Algeria

A Ukrainian cargo plane crashed in the Sahara desert early today, killing all seven people on board, Algeria’s transport ministry said.

The Antonov 12, which had come from Glasgow in Scotland and was bound for Equatorial Guinea, came down near Tamanrasset airport at around 2:40 am local time, a ministry statement said.

“Unfortunately, rescue teams did not find any survivors at the scene of the crash,” the statement added.

The aircraft had been transporting petroleum industry equipment.

Mayor to hear Land Acquisition grievances on Sept 1

GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain on Saturday expressed displeasure over the slow pace of road widening works in the city.

The Mayor also expressed anger over the delay in payment of compensation to those affected due to acquisition of properties for road widening. In order to resolve such grievances, he invited all the affected people to his chambers at GHMC Headquarters on September 1 between 3 to 5 PM. All officials concerned of Town Planning and Land Acquisition Departments too would be available to address their grievances.

Petition filed to disqualify Sharif

A petition was filed today in a Pakistani court seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for lying in his speech to the Parliament.

The application was filed by Gauhar Nawaz who is a senior president of the Insaf Lawyers Forum.

The petition, filed in the Lahore High Court, stated that Sharif yesterday lied on the issue of arbitration by the army to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the country.

He, thus, did not fulfil the qualifications specified in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

C. V. Rao sworn-in as Maharashtra governor

C.V. Rao was on Saturday sworn in as governor of Maharashtra at a function in Raj Bhavan here.

Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit Shah administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rao, a senior BJP leader from Telangana.

Rao took over from Gujarat Governor O.P. Kohli, who was given additional charge of Maharashtra after K. Sankaranarayanan resigned from the post Sunday.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, his cabinet colleagues and other prominent dignitaries attended the function.

Police said Subhashini belonging to Timmareddipalem under Dagadarthi mandal in the district has been undergoing training in Guttikonda Sriramulu Teacher Training College in Buchchireddipalem. On Saturday morning, Subhashini allegedly poured kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze.

Court slaps Rs.3 lakh fine on Dikshit for non-appearance

A court here Saturday slapped with a fine of Rs.3 lakh on former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit after she failed to appear before it in a defamation case filed by her against BJP leader Vijender Gupta.

Metropolitan Magistrate Neha imposed the fine after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader’s counsel told court that she was directed by the court to appear on Saturday without any excuse.

Gupta’s counsel, advocate Anil Soni opposed Dikshit’s plea seeking exemption from personal appearance in the court, saying she is delaying the matter.

Indian Bank opens 7.58 lakh Jan Dhan Yojana accounts

Public sector lender Indian Bank Saturday said it has opened 758,000 basic savings bank deposit (BSBD) accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.

The bank said three regional rural banks sponsored by it – Sapthagiri Grameena Bank, Pallavan Grama Bank and Puduvai Bharthiar Grama Bank – have together opened 120,000 accounts.

The bank’s 1,814 branches across India held a savings account opening campaign while mega campaigns were held in Puducherry and Tirupathi, a statement said.

Imran Khan again demands Sharif’s resignation

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan Saturday reiterated his demand that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif step down until the judicial commission completes its probe into the alleged rigging during the 2013 general elections.

“The prime minister should sit out for one month until the rigging probe is complete. Resign till the investigation and if cleared return,” Geo News quoted Imran Khan as saying.

The cricketer-turned-politician also said that Sharif lied on the floor of the National Assembly about who had asked the army to mediate.

Dy CM reviews arrangements for Haj Camp

Nearly 20 departments of State and Central Governments have assured their full cooperation in the departure of nearly 7,000 pilgrims for Haj 2014 from Hyderabad Embarkation Point.

The first Haj flight carrying 350 Haj pilgrims, clad in Ehraam, will leave for Jeddah at 11:30 on September 14 (Sunday) from the Haj Terminal of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. While Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali will flag off the first batch of pilgrims, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will flag off the second batch on September 15.

Students boycott classes in over 70 Haryana colleges

Students of over 70 Haryana colleges boycotted classes Saturday and enforced a “bandh” over issues like safety of girl students, restoration of student council elections and academic reforms, a student leader said.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s student body Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad had called the strike in over 70 colleges across the state.

“Our demands are: Safety for girl students in and outside the college premises, restoration of student union elections and change in the academic semester system,” Satiah Judola, ABVP department coordinator told IANS.

Railway minister’s son seeks anticipatory bail in rape case

Karthik Gowda, son of Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Saturday moved a court for anticipatory bail in a rape and cheating case filed against him by Kannada actress Maithreyi.

The actress had filed the case after 30-year-old Karthik got engaged to another woman at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district.

The city sessions court, however, adjourned the case for further hearing to Sep 4 after issuing notice to the R.T. Nagar police station where the complaint was filed Wednesday.

The court also asked the police station if it would file objections to Karthik’s anticipatory bail plea.
