Married woman raped, blackmailed; accused absconding

A married woman was allegedly raped by a man, who also recorded the act on his mobile phone and had been blackmailing her since then in Gandhi Nagar area of the district.

“The accused, Dilip Jaiman, called the woman at a place two months ago on the pretext of giving her a job and raped her.

“He also made a clipping and later showed it to her and raped her again,” a police officer said.

A case was lodged at Gandhi Nagar police station yesterday on the complaint of the woman.

Don’t treat children as adults: Amnesty

The Indian government must reject proposed amendments to juvenile justice laws that will allow children to be treated as adults in serious crimes, Amnesty International said Thursday.

“Children can and do sometimes commit crimes as violent as those committed by adults. And the pain and anger of a victim or their family may well be the same regardless of whether a crime was committed by a child or an adult,” said Shashikumar Velath of Amnesty International India.

“But children’s culpability, even when they commit ‘adult’ crimes, is different because of their immaturity,” he said.

Telangana gets Rs 3.3 Lakh Cr investments: Study

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday said Israel will continue to destroy underground tunnels in Gaza regardless of any possible cease-fire agreement even as the toll in the coastal enclave touched 1,363.

A Mexican journalist was found stabbed to death in his home in the town of Guadalupe in the country’s north central Zacatecas, sources said Thursday.

Journalist Nolberto Herrera Rodríguez was found dead in his home Wednesday with more than 20 stab wounds, a spokesperson for Article 19, an international organisation defending freedom of expression, told Efe news agency.

Herrera Rodríguez served as a cameraman, reporter and editor on Zacatecas’s Channel 9 television and other media, and as well as in the public sector.

Jung directs DUSIB to set up night shelters for homeless women

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung today directed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to set up separate night shelters for homeless women before the onset of winter.

Jung directed the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to carry out a survey in their respective districts and identify locations for establishment of such night shelters.

“These night shelters for women shall be located independent of the existing night shelters primarily occupied by men. The Lt Governor also directed that the general upkeep of existing night shelters be improved,” said an L-G house official.

Efforts on to check dog, monkey menace in parliament

Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu Thursday said that efforts are being made to tackle the monkey and dog menace inside and around Parliament House.

“The measures being taken include scaring the monkeys away by trained persons who disguise themselves as langurs,” Naidu stated in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

He said that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has hired 40 young people for this purpose.

“NDMC also acquired rubber bullet guns for scaring away the monkeys,” he added.

Goa Catholics upset over deputy CM’s comment

Catholics living in Goa can be called Indian Christians but not Hindu Christians, the Catholic Association of Goa said Thursday criticizing Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza’s comments.

“We, their heirs (of Hindu ancestors) are now Christians. We can be surely called ‘Indian Christians’. When one does not know what one is talking about, then it is better to remain silent.
